TBC PvP balance shifted from medium-large scale battles (BGs) to really small ones, forcing you into Arenas to get the best PvP gear.
This has been the major flaw of it for me, especially because some synergies have been nerfed out of the blue while others have been left in an OP state for entire seasons based on what the Devs thought it was more fun which is a terrible approach.
Arenas should have never been the focus of the PvP side of WoW, it should have stayed on BGs where the sheer numbers of fighters (10 vs 10 as minimum) balanced the differences in classes by themselves and still allowed organized play to be far superior to PUGs.
Arenas were good to begin with when you could group with your mates, but eventually the best combos were worked out and it became not fun to lose just because you met the FOTM every game.
Sl/sl warlock and resto Druid were one of the most broken combos in 2v2 of all time.
It was still pretty unbalanced too. I played Mage in TBC and if I saw a warrior it was a free kill and if I saw a warlock or any healer I just ran away. Healing specs were massively op in TBC. They could out heal almost every class 1v1 and kill them with dots. Not fun.
Organized teamplay (which is what gives you actual ranks in BGs), is far form a zerg fest, especially in BGs like AB or WSG. AV was meant to be something akin to a real war front and shouldn’t last less than 3 hours. We got one of the worst iterations of it.
If u think tbc is going to be balanced in PvP oh you are in for a treat . That said . I do like TBC more ,mostly cause of us getting paladins + hybrids being more balanced in pve . Bgs also become abit more balanced with shamans and palas on both factions.
Also honor farm for high ranks is annoying in classic.
So Tbc > classic
I’m in the same boat tbh. I was an avid PvPer when I primarily played the game from TBC through Cata… but I just can’t make myself join any BG’s in this state of the game because it’s just aweful. I either oneshot, or get killed without being able to do a damn thing about it. Its way too far on each side of the spectrum.
As I have already stated, TBC >>>>> Classic in every aspect of the game. Concerning PvP, the addition of resilience/pvp vendors were huge, since there was no need to raid 24/7 in order to be competitive in PvP. Class balance was also very important for PvP since every class/spec was at least decent, having a wide variety of builds and possibilities. All in all, I can’t wait for TBC.
I did enjoy TBC PvP and Arena’s but people don’t seem to remember those crazy long games in arena vs a resto druid or Holy Paladin
The fact you could just run around a pillar to avoid things like CC and mana burn and even get the odd drink in there (even better with shadow meld) made certain match ups take forever.
Although it was admittedly better than the current ranking system I’d take hour long arena games over having to be online 15 hours a day for max rank.
Subtelty was fun in BG, but the meta was clearly about rogues being Adrenaline Rush + Hemo + Maces + Prep in arenas.
It wasn’t a very fancy gameplay: just spam hemo while being dispelled by your priest. Opposing team uses cooldown during first Adre Rush. You kill them during second Adre Rush.
Obviously there were teamwork subtelties, but this barely qualified as “rogue-ish” gameplay.
At least assassin had to find the back and deep subtelty had some legit fancy tricks, but I am afraid we would see very little of these specs with the more prevalent min-maxing we have now.
In my opinion WoW should’ve skipped from classic to Wotlk. The outland theme doesnt fit WoW. But Wotlk does. It has some sort of same elements as classic. I know many of you started playing in burning crusade so you have nostalgic memories. But this game would’ve been amazing if it had only classic and wrath of lich king combined and end it there.
TBC was fun but balanced?
Right now i’m playing on a TBC private server and must tell you that TBC was 60% RNG procs upon RNG procs.
It was almost the same RNG as the retail when it comes to corruption procs.
Cata was the best PvP for me with MoP coming close to it.
TBC was fun and i loved it but in PvP was just a pure RNG fest.
Few classes were available for arenas.
You enjoy ret paladins? Well the only chance for you to be competitive was with resto shaman for the WF totem RNG procs.
Holy paladins were the kings of arenas in s1 and a bit of s2 but when mana regen massively came with s3 and s4 H paladins were shadowed by the R druids that became the kings thanks to the mana regen on all the main set and off set pieces.
I’m one of those that found their pvp feet as it were in TBC. BGs rather than arenas so I’ve a lot of fond memories of it (likely just waiting to be eroded by any clunky release) especially having chars in a number of twink brackets. Resilience really pushed the need for seperate pvp/pve gear sets and having played so long without it I’m now unsure about it. Still, it did mean there were less pve players just trying to farm gear with no actual interest in pvp so it might go some way to solving the rush and rinse mentality.
