Question about prot Warrior

I am thinking of going prot Warrior. Should i learn 2H weapons to use on solo and on dungeons/elite quests grouping use 1H + Shield? Wouldn’t be harder to find the right weapons? I really want to try Prot talent tree. I want to mainly tank damage.

Also another question. I guess that if i taking the most dmg in a dungeon my armor gonna break faster. Could be a good idea if i ask some money from my group for the armor repairing?

Using 2hander is viable, I suppose, but you will have to grind more weapon skills. You don’t want to go into a dungeon and start tanking with like, 30 skill in axes.

You could go dual wield.

I would recommend against prot until higher levels - go Arms and you will be able to tank fine and will have less threat issues - I use a 2h weapon to start getting threat and then switch to 1h and shield when ive secured enough threat usually

Not by enough to warrant panicking over

Honest answer? No - no matter if your intentions are good or bad, it will make you look like its just you being selfish (which, I don’t believe is your intention at all from this post, but… that is how it will look in game)

0/32/19 is more than viable. You can dw tank all trash and caster bosses as well switching to shield on hard hitting bosses/mobs. Rage generation goes through the roof so you can literally spam sunders and even BT

PS. Don’t try it until late 50s though. During levelling tanking in arms with 1h and shield cause no problems whatsoever

What do you mean when you say, you switch to 1H + shield when you gain enough threat? You mean you swap weapons during combat? With an addon or macro?

Dual wield? No man… This is bad idea…

Why most people are against prot tree? Why it exists anyway?

Deep prot spec is very good for raids eapecially with its mobility and control (intercept and stuns). Levelling as prot is a sort of masochism because you need to actually kill stuff as fast as possible. Unless you want to level all the way only in dungeons which is way slower than regular questing.

I swap using keybound macros in combat

#showtooltip
/equip (MAINHAND WEAPON)
/equipslot 17 (OFFHAND WEAPON OR SHIELD)
(switch the brackets to the weapon or shield name)

Protection isnt a “tank” spec as such in Vanilla/Classic - Protection is the… Protection spec! It is purely a spec based around damage mitigation and use of shields  Warrior itself was/is a “tank” class instead of a class with a tank spec

Also, should i buy weapons from vendors or wait for quest/drops? Cause if i have to buy from vendors 1H + Shield + 2H i need much money!

You can use even the grey shield that dropped off the boar in the starting zone. It will not have the bonus armor but it will still serve the chief purpose - move crits and crushes off the attack table. And it will not suffer any durability loss :joy:

So on early levels when i solo i have 2H or 1H + shield? With 1H + shield i can go sometimes even 1vs3.

2h definitely. You can’t do damage with your shield as you can guess (until you get 31 talent in prot tree).
Yes, you can go 1vs3 with a shield and defstance. Now figure out how faster would that be to kill 3 mobs continuously 1v1 with a 2h

What weapon to buy at level 10? One from vendors or at quests? I guess on stormwind i cant learn only Swords?

I wouldn’t buy anything either of vendor or on ah. There are pretty much drop stuff. Open all the chests you can find. If you roll a dwarf they have a racial of tracking chests which helps. You can learn swords and maces in SW iirc and axes in IF

Darnassus - Bows, Daggers, Fist Weapons, Staves and Thrown

Ironforge (Gnome) - Crossbows, Daggers and Thrown

Ironforge (Dwarf) - Fist Weapons, Guns, One handed Axes, Two Handed Axes, One Handed Maces and Two Handed Maces

Stormwind - Crossbows, Daggers, One Handed Swords, Staves and two Handed Swords (and at level 20 - Polearms)

So what to learn first? I need much money to learn all these at level 10!

Depends on which you chance to loot i guess. Level with what you have, the if some good weapon drops, learn the skill. I’d go for 2h swords and maces. That would pretty much cover most good weapons for alliance. Later you could learn also axes and polearms if you happen to loot a nice weapon.

I guess I gave to learn swords and maces cause of the human bonus? Maybe also bows for stats?

I wouldn’t rush out and get any when they are not needed

Visit the cities if/when needed (get a cool sword drop? it will be fine to wait till you can return to a city before using it! Otherwise you may decide swords and get an awesome Axe drop that you cant afford to train due to getting the Sword skill that you havnt even had a chance to use yet!

In regards to buying weapons: I wouldnt suggest it, although you can always do a quick check on the AH for cheapy stuff (sometimes you will get lucky) - ONLY resort to vendor stuff if your weapon is a good 3-4+ levels behind you and you are starting to struggle

When you are saying 3-4+ levels behind me weapon?

Use 2h while solo, even if prot-specced.
Use 1h + shield in dungeons if you do big spellcleave pulls, otherwise 2h is fine.

At 52+ you wanna be using 1h+shield at all times in dungeons. Your damage is too low even with 2h.
Better leave the dps to dps.
