You guys do recognize that for the sub count to stay stagnant, an equal amount of people were leaving the game than joining the game. Wrath was dropping players like mad during its runtime.
You must also take into context that there was a huge hype surounding Wrath, massiv amounts of players were joining. This means that a huge amount were also leaving the game.
The downfall was kickstartet IN WRATH, not in cata.

Start of Cataclysm => 12 millions sub
T11 content => 11 millions sub
T12 content => 10 millions sub
T13 content => 9 millions sub
TBC ? Starting 7.5 millions to 11 millions sub.
So no, Cataclysm wasnât get a terrible drop as they would have us believe.
And donât forget Cataclysm get a long timeline for less content than TBC, so we could imagine Cataclysm with 10 millions sub if it wasnât so long.
So again, Cataclysm wasnât the end of i donât know what classic era players think.

Shedding 3 million subs is a big deal but simplifying it by saying â graph go down = expansion bad, is just shallow.
There are so many factors going into this. The biggest problem beeing competition and an aging playerbase.
I know alot of people simply not having the time for wow anymore, due to their life changing.
I stopped playing in late cata for league of legends, not due to not liking the game, I just wanted to try something new.

Yes there are many factors, gameplay, story, world design, instance design ⌠RDF might have been reason for some people to enjoy the game less, but wow didnt lose several milion subs because of it âŚ
I personally do not know anybody specifically stating RDF as a reason for leaving the game. This is purely anecdotal though.
Personally, I think the overarching problem was the playerbase not engaging in leveling/gearing alts as much as they used to. The RDF beeing a band aid for a larger problem manifesting itself at the time. Blizzard trying to revive the ailing parts of the game.
Also, the enviremont was changing. The competition was going for fast paste games, with less time commitment. Appealing to new players.
Imo, its less the systems and more the people changing over time that âkilledâ the game.
Sure Jan, you got kicked for talking in RDF after 15 mins passed or the first boss was downed.

Cataclysm was an awful expansion.

That is true but the whole world that northrend and WC3 led into was a culmination on the warcraft story. It is also why so many people feel WOTLK is where wow âendedâ.

I have only been kicke after defending my self after a wipe/bad pull. IE a DPS pull something and start to go on the tank/healer for being bad and not covering the DPS misstake.

I already played on a pserv which PLAYERS wanted to try a fresh serv without RDF, and guess what, everyone wanted the RDF after 1 month because they thought that it will change the game, improving the social etc. and finaly not.
And because of that now, i never see anyone asking for a new Wotlk pserv without RDF after this useless experience.
And guess what, itâs happening again on Wotlk Classic.
