Raid tanking

Hey!

This is a question for the devs about raid tank viability.

What is the stance you are taking for tanks in raid, will all three be able to be a dedicated main tank for there raids?

Will the raids follow a classic designe of raid where there is a main tank and off-tank chasing threat or a more modern designe where the tanks work togather swaping the bosses back and forth depending on buffs/debuffs mechanics?

When looking to make a charakter some of us are more looking to what role we want to fill more then what class we want to play.

So for myself and maby some other people we can play any of the tanks but we might want to fill that specific spot as a main tank but not knowing what the designe intent for raids are or if all tanks will be equaly good in this role makes it hard to do any planing for the release of the game.

Could you please state some of the planes you have for raid setup or if classes will have specific roles they can only fill.

Thanks for your time.

Hope this can get some eyes and maby some discussion about similar topics in the comments.

I do hope the podcast will continue and cover tanks.

That said i think its not to hard to guess. There will be different encounters and each tank will be good for something else. But all will be doable by all tanks.

Warrior will most likely be the most versatile. Bear will be the HP Monster for hard hitting bosses. And pally will be perfect for aoe tanking.

I doubt you will need a specific tank for anything. Its classic + and classic raids are quite easy overall.

well the raids are new and not all from classic.

I dont think they change the game difficulty.

All that happened was the other way. The new dungeons in the beta are freeloot.

Well so far what we saw on lvl 30 beta, the only tank/s that u need in raids is Warrior or Druid, those 2 have all cowered practically.. Single target check, Mitigation/crush immune check, toolkit ( slow att speed + decrease att power, interupt) check, AoE check since now all tank as the same on aoe… defensive cds check, hi APM so u can react quickly with snap threat CHECK, TAUNT ON ITS OWN OFF GCD CHECK… so in any given situation as for the “paladin” who didnt work in vanilla/tbc his foundations was finally build in WotLK, yes my gents in WotLk and not sooner. My boy pally is ok, but that about it… u can bring him in raid but that about it… no real mitigation, no real taunt, 1 defensive cooldown that triggers Forbearance, a very slow APM, and a 10-second cooldown on snap threat abilities like Holy Strike and Judgment. and 0 mana sustain if ur are off tanking.

The TBC Paladin worked halfway precisely because its Consecration scaled incredibly well with SP.

You practically just stood there, and the mobs never broke control, thats why slow APM wasnt an issue.

But now that they have gutted this identity in the Paladin and nerfed Consecration, along with nerfing the spell coefficient, this version of the Paladin now needs all these WotLK abilities in Forever to compete with Druid and Warrior…

If they had simply left the TBC Paladin as it was, and just added that defensive CD and Holy Strike, the debate would be over and he would be a true tank… but instead, they turned the whole thing upside down…

In tbc or wotlk anniversary maybe. Not in forever. Please catch up.

Well, it’s obvious that all tanks are supposed viable in a raid environment. Developers never mentioned one of tanks being lesser one.

How that will plays out in practice? Remains to be seen. Given the fact that developers are free to balance classes as they see fit, I would expect that all tanks will be viable, but of course there will be preferred classes. My opinion is that druid will be preferred tank, followed by warrior, followed by paladin. But take that with a grain of salt.

One big issue with paladin is exactly threat chasing. It’s obvious in TBC and it’ll be even more obvious in forever. Without someone hitting you, you just run out of mana and you can’t regenerate mana quickly enough. Both warrior and druids have infinite rage bar and their rage actually regenerates at decent rate even when they’re not being hit. Additionally warrior can equip two one-handers to generate even more rage and threat. And druid can swap to kitty to deal very good DPS, if threat is not needed. That’ll make paladin preferred MT (just because he’s terrible OT both in threat chasing and damage dealing).

This doom and gloom is unwarranted. It all comes down to tuning. If they would tomorrow remove all abilities from paladin and make righteous fury generate 9999% threat, paladin would be BiS tank and nobody cares what’s your DPS or APM is, as long as you keep the threat. If paladin truly will not be competitive at level 60, they’ll just buff coefficients as necessary. They have the knobs. If you like paladin mechanics as it is now (not numbers, but gameplay), I’d suggest to keep playing. And if you don’t, well, don’t torture yourself. There will be players who will love it.

In fact it feels like paladin is the most beloved class of Aggrend, the main WoW Forever designer. So I think that it’ll be safe and it’ll never be weak.

I dont think it does. Warrior and Druid were already solid.

Paladin was a Hot Mess.

I just hope we can get a response from blizzard in some way what they are planing so players like myself can plan what class to play if they are “locked” into a main or off-tank role.

I loved playing a main tank in classic and did so for the 2019 release but in anniversary i was an off-tank and i really dident like it at all.

So to avoid having to reroll if i pick the wrong class that became the defacto off-tank i would like to have for info from the devs now how they are planing. Just as they did with saying that “rogue will be the best single target dps if its a fight where everyone just stands still and hits the boss.” and “warrior will be best two target cleave dps” it would be nice to know if the tanks are planed to fill similar roles. Like warrior is the defacto MT, druids OT as they can go cat for dps and paladin will be best AoE add tank.

Because then i know that i will need to go warrior if i cant to MT stuff most of the time.

That would seem to be a real stretch at this point.

ye true. but the point remains

A tank session would be nice.

You can’t even generate enough mana when something is hitting you. You run out of mana in 150s at lvl 60, 250s if you use Seal of Wisdom.

Why would anyone bring a Paladin when a druid does twice the threat (at lvl 30, just wait for Lacerate to get in there) and a warrior that does 80% more threat (just wait for Shield Slam to get in there), in contrast Holy Shield in its current form will never even get half the threat Shield Slam and Lacerate will do.
Yo guys! We’re going to need you to DPS very very slowly, because we have a MT Paladin.
NOW HEAL HIM. QUICK! He used his only defensive 1min ago!

That obviously depends on talents tuning. If paladins ended up being OOM in raids, they’ll tune the numbers.

You should not look at specific numbers right now. It’s beta, it’s in constant flux. They just upped threat by 150%, they will do more adjustments if needed. Look only at mechanics. Mechanics-wise, mana regen is fine.

The same thing about threat. It’s all about tuning. They will change RF from 90% to 190% if needed. What they won’t likely to at this point is adding new abilities. But for ranged pull, for example, it is absolutely possible that they’ll give some paladin shield with “Use: throw shield at enemies” doing ranged pull, for example. Yes, you’ll need to keep that shield in your bags and switch after pull to another one, not a big deal with few macros.

No, this is an absolutely dreadful idea & why the prot paladin is currently as dull as ditchwater.
