Random lag, followed by disconnects

Hello there,

I’ve been having issues with DCs and lag in both TBC and retail. I’ve returned to the game 2 days or so ago, so the install is fresh, and DCs occur without any addons too. Played a lot of WoW until 2017 or so, same connection, same ISP, not a single issue in the past. The game runs great at about 40 latency, but maybe 2 times/hr it lags (can’t cast) and then DC.

I’ve ran WinMTR. I see some issues along the connection path, if I am not mistaken? Please let me know what else I can do. Router is reset, no website/game has any issues, this is a optical fiber 1Gbps FTTH connection, rock solid.

Hello and welcome back to the game Retvrn!

The WinMTR results are actually looking perfectly fine. I’m assuming you may have had some concerns about the as57976.net node, but that one happens to be a firewall that delays/throttles specific type of data packets (among them those used for such tests, as the same packets are also used for DDoS/flood-style attacks). Gaming data traffic passes unhindered there, so whatever is going wrong with the connection unfortunately did not leave any traces in the captured log results.

It’d be worth a try to use a VPN, and see if the disconnections still occur. If they do not, that’d be rather strong evidence towards a routing/stability problem somewhere along your “regular” connection path, and your ISP would likely be able to help with this.

You might be correct.
Tried with a VPN and also remembered I have a second ISP that came free with the TV cable, so I gave both a shot, and the game seems stable.
Meanwhile on my main connection without the VPN, it DCs. Tried connecting both wirelessly and wired to the router and it still DCs, but it’s random and somewhat rare, so unsure if it’s a coincidence.
Will contact the ISP later today. Very weird, peculiar stuff, never had issues like this before, and WoW on this ISP was 100% stable for me, minus the rare occurrences of server issues and so on. Wonder what’s going on and what changed in these 4-5 years.
I’ll return with another reply if I fix it or the ISP has something to say. This is the largest ISP in my country and I assume a very large proportion of the people from here connect through it, might be of help to somebody else too.
It’s also worth noting that even on the main connection it’s basically running at below 40ms, can be stable for 2 hrs, and then it just lags out of nowhere/DCs. If I Alt-F4 during the lag and restart the game, all is fine yet again. I assume some node on the path to Blizz servers is just not functioning well for me.
