I’m trying to find the rare mob “Miner Johnson” in the Deadmines dungeon.
In order to check if he spawned, I run to the first boss “Rhahk’Zor” and type “/target Miner”. If he spawned, he should be in my focus by then. If he didn’t spawn, I reset the dungeon until the hourly maximum is reached.
Each try takes about 3 minutes and I don’t kill any creatures on the way.
I have 3 different accounts total with different characters to check. With that, I can check 15 times per hour to see, if he spawned.
During the last 7 days, I must have checked about 500 (five hundred) times if he spawned… and he never did once.
I know that rare mobs don’t always spawn, but at this rate, it cannot just be bad luck. That’s why I’m thinking that something might be wrong here.

Thanks for your reply. I opened a ticket and wait for response there.
Edit:
I cannot say, if this has anything to do with it, but this issue (if it is one) seemed to occur after the update on October 12th. After this update, I wasn’t able to play because of the “incompatible server” issue. It resolved itself after a certain amount of time though.
So, if anyone reads this and saw Miner Johnson after this update on an Classic Era server, please make a post here. I’m starting to lose my sanity here wink.
It doesn’t say anywhere in that link to make a ticket, you will not get helped in a ticket and are adding to the queue for other players. Please close your ticket now.
The miner is a rare and you are just very unlucky. It’s not like he drops anything you can use anyway.
Since I opened this topic, I made another ~500 tries and still haven’t seen him, making this 1000 failed attempts. Even with a spawn chance of - let’s say - 2% per ID, the chances of not seeing him in 1000 attempts would be 0,98^1000, which equals to about 1 : 600.000.000.
I’m searching for him for a small video project I’m undertaking right now. Loot etc. is not important here.
Now, we can talk all day, if I’m the unluckiest elf on Azeroth or not, but instead, I’d like to know if I’m doing something wrong here. Let me explain shortly, how I check on him.
With one account, I have a level 60 warlock who runs up to the first boss, opens the door behind him (you don’t have to kill the boss to open it btw) and checks the alcove to the left, where Miner Johnson is supposed to be.
With the other 2 accounts, I have hunters with “Track Humanoids” activated, who use “Eyes of the Beast” to send their pets up to the first boss. That way I save myself the way back to the dungeon entrance.
If he spawned I should see him on the minimap as he is clearly in range for that. Besides that I spam my “/target Miner” macro of course.
All three of them are alone and not in a group.
Now, am I missing something here?
Do I have to kill the first boss to make him spawn?
Do I have to be in a group?
Did Blizzard implement anything in the past that makes “Rare Mob farming” more complicated (at least on Classic Era)?
And lastly, has anyone of you seen him in the last 4 weeks on a Classic Era server? I’m pretty sure, that this started with patch 1.14.3.45437 which came out around Oct. 12th.
Bug report is not a ticket: When you open customer support theres a row of square pictures, screenshots from in-game. The leftmost one (a bluish giant bug) says: Submit feedback or bug reoprt. Click that pic and scroll down a bit on the next page, there’s a box where you can type. Do this! repeat in a couple of days. Hope for a result.
Now I’m going to visit the Deadmines (Hydraxian Era) and see if I can find him, I hope I can solo my way there
Is he where the second screenshot here shows him?
Hello Driim. Thanks for your interest in this subject.
The project I was talking about is to answer the question how much group content (meaning Elite mobs, group quests and of course dungeons) a hunter can solo without being over-leveled.
For example:
Can a hunter solo the whole Deadmines dungeon at level 21 (the level of the end boss) or lower?
Can a hunter solo the Elite Quest “Summoning the Princess” at level 44 (the level of Myzrael) or lower?
I want to examine this for every single piece of elite content there is in Classic Era WoW. Rare Elites like Miner Johnson are part of this and - for the sake of completion - need to be encountered as well. Any loot is of no importance to me at all.
This might sound incredibly boring and/or like a complete waste of effort for many of you, but for me it is the only reason I’m playing WoW.
Back to topic:
About an hour ago, I got a whisper from someone who actually managed to make Miner Johnson spawn. I went in, encountered him and made my thing. Apparently, I really was the unluckiest elf on the planet… . But now, I’m the happiest (or killing the first boss was really a requirement…).
