Recent DDoS Attacks Impacting Game Service

weird gehennas didnt get hit

Yeah and “XXX” is against their rules?

People Blaming Blizz for something out off there control
Not much they can do in this situation.

Yep. Not as if they’ve had 15 years to get ready for it. And it’s a shame they’re such a small company and they can’t afford to buy better security.

Can you be 100% protected though?

Its funny that you have no clue fi that guys are good and know what they are doing they can get everythink down its not about blizz dont have a good protection

I have absolutely zero clue about DDosing. But it sounds like something very “easy” to do, but very hard to protect yourself from completely.

Yep, Not as if very few websites/servers have fantastic protection against DDoS attacks. Shame you dont understand it.

DDoS is like the common cold. Very simple
 uncureable
 Annoying af.

How can be such a strong company target for DDOS attack? Dont u have any protection, blizz?

That’s not how it works. If they can knock Twitch offline, which is owned by Amazon, who have a worldwide cloud infrastructure, then the Blizzard servers won’t pose much of a challenge.

As far as I understood it twitch as a whole was never downed?
Just a few singular streamers themselves.
I could be wrong, though.

Nah the whole site wasn’t down, they targeted some specific servers.

Btw. what about the layering? After a 1st attack layering was down (Golemagg). Is it way how it ll stay?

Why is it everytime a DDOS happens all the idiots come from the woods talking about Blizzard should “buy better protection”, cuz they think network security and protecting against one of the most hard to mitigate type of attacks in the modern age of the internet is just a matter of buying the pro version of your antivirus.

How about instead of posting complete irelevant bs you shut your uneducated mouth and give some apreciation to the people that probably had to be called to work due to some mr robot wannabe ddosing their servers.

Interesting. I’d guess the other layers didn’t auto-start up when the servers came back up for some reason :face_with_monocle:

I’d like your comment, but I don’t ‘like’ it.

Also, good work @Blizz, Shazzrah back up and working <3

Well things seem to have calmed down now, hopefully Blizzard were able to get on top of it

Because If Blizzard just bought Norton Anti Virus there would never be a DDOS obviously!

DDOS attacks are very hard to block by their very nature, on a small scale if I launched a DDOS attack against my main server 12 of my websites would go down instantly and I am just one person with 2 computers, normally attacks of this nature are launched simultaneously by hundreds if not thousands of computers all of which have had bots installed on them without the users even knowing that these bots were on their machines, the hacker just has a master control program that tells all these bots to attack x website at x:xx time on x/x/x date, and they all launch the attack, what then happens is that these bots all start transmitting data together which overwhelms the data coming in to whatever x server(s) were and that prevents legitimate users like you and me getting into the server and we all get a Denial of Service message because the server cannot handle all of the data being sent to it, with a website that would be a simple unable to connect message, for an online game it would cause disconnects or server is full messages or if you were already logged in you would get the character is already online message, it doesn’t affect the server just the connections to it so if you are already logged in your char is still active on the server you just can’t see it
