Regarding Man'ari

They had entirely different plans and ideologies even. A’dal wanted Illidan put to an end in TBC because he was destroying what remained of Draenor and welcomed any and all refugees to Shattrath, even those who prayed to the Void.

Even though I like Illidan, let’s be real she was villain batted out of left field to make Illidan seem cooler.

This can be explained by the reaction people had to her questline and piece of info from Illidan book where he´s portrayed as a great champion of the Light leading its armies against Legion during a vision provided by the naaru (or a dream, it´s been a while since I´ve read the book).
Anyone who knew how to read with understanding could figure out that Blizzard was working towards that outcome and people really, really didn´t like it.

Which I believe is the reason behind X´era suddenly being not that good of a person and Illidan destroying her, which in turn gave us the first (and so far the only) naaru who isn´t really good (even though one could argue that turning Tyrant of Outland into servant of the naaru was morally good decision from the point of view of anyone who actually knew the guy).

He’s a crumb bum.

I’d argue that A’dal and M’uru were operating in differing circumstances. Xe’ra was leading the Army directly and had for millenia only been leading her chosen in ideal circumstances (i.e. there were no other powers around to challenge her or make her moderate her actions, which is why she cracked down so harshly on Alleria when she started learning of the Voids) and thus was far more direct and extreme in her actions.

A’dal and M’uru were in crisis mode. They had answered the summons of their most promising servant race only to be ambushed. They had no Army at their direct command, no powerful base of operations thanks to the loss of Tempest Keep, had Legion and Illidari forces to contend with and had to operate with the assistance of numerous non-Light aligned races in order to keep themselves safe due to the lack of a major race to act as footsoldiers (our Outland Draenei were very much an endangered species at this time). Thus, they were very much less direct and were far more co-operative, putting commonly shared goals ahead of their own agendas.

Plus it can be argued that they may have even been attempting to sow the seeds of a new Army on Azeroth by re-invigorating the Sunwell. After all, a race suffused with the Light seems to be the easiest to Lightforge. It may be that they hoped to make the Sin’dorei the newest addition to the Army and thus deemed them worthy of the sacrifice of a Naaru.

Now K’ara (the Naaru we left behind in AU Draenor) had possibly THE most ideal conditions a Naaru could have asked for. A Light-aligned people that are on the upswing, a lasting peace with no major threats or disruptions, no lingering Legion presence, a reinforced (thanks to the Alliance’s efforts) base in Shadowmoon and most importantly: time. It can very easily be argued that K’ara shows us what can happen when these supreme beings of Light are left alone without any elements to give them significant push back, and arguably A’dal and M’uru may have acted much as K’ara did if the situation were different (and let’s not forget, O’ros was with them, the last of Xe’ra’s line. If the big boss sent that group, I’d wager they were playing by her rules.).

That would be entirely out of character and pocket for what we saw of A’dal and the Naaru he came with.

Or perhaps rather than a grand conspiracy that they were forced to do this in their guerilla light conversion plan… they were just doing it out of their own goodness which has been expressed in lore via their actions time and time and time again?

A lot of what you said is very loosely slung together headcanon which doesn’t really align with the characterisation of the Naaru mentioned, or the Naaru as a general race. Which is that of a charitable force of good willing to sacrifice themselves to defend mortals, even if those mortals don’t align with, or have actively hurt, them.

But the draenei weren´t changed into Lightbound by K´ara, but rather by the naaru that arrived later (we´re not told directly who this naaru was, but let´s be real, we all know it was X´era).
For years after we left Draenor, the draenei and orcs were doing fine, with K´ara being present. It´s only when this mysterious other naaru came (and the world started dying, surely because of the Light and not because of something orcs might have done, like killing the Primals, naaaaaaah) that they became radicalized.

I am unsure about this. Is this lore from some quest? Or is this an interpretation from the whole “Turalyon losing his golden eyes after Xe’ra is destroyed” event?

I think the glowing eye thing in Wow is often synonymous with being empowered by whatever cosmic force. Once it’s no longer in effect it recedes immediately or after a long time depending with some taking years or generations.

Yes, though that doesn’t translate to mind domination, I think.

I agree with this, to an extent. While it was obvious that the naaru planned to “redeem” the blood elves (You can’t actually drain a naaru, as it turns out, M’uru gave willingly and knew what his fate would be – the prophecy was also really ham fisted ), I think it’s definitely a “if you turn the triangle block around it fits through the circle hole” moment to say that it’s because the blood elves would be easier to lightforge… especially considering lightforging wasn’t a thing in tbc lmao.

It’s the first I’ve heard of it.

While Turalyon’s golden eyes coupled with Illidan’s line that his faith had “blinded you” could be interpreted as an influence, it’s not something that was ever suggested elsewhere afaik. Audio drama included.

Yeah, I thought as much. That being said, I think it’d be a cool concept to explore. I doubt we’ll see anything of the sort in WoW though. At least not it being a standard among all Lightforged.

So, getting back to the original thread topic, what are you guys planning for your Man’ari characters, concept wise? My draenei gal Vekaara here’ll be conducting a fel ritual to achieve demonhood and increase her powers, herself, given she feels that such a state is inevitable anyway given how regularly she uses fel magic.

I’mma just say that the lore being badly written is no excuse to headcanon in replacements in some brave act of defiance or to just say nothing matters because it’s bad. If you expect to play with other people adhering to the lore it’s important to paint within the lines.

Never really understood that one really
We have perfectly fine Kirin Tor and/or Draenei made Crystal “communicators” and recording devices not unlike the Star Wars’ holodiscs/holocoms

IMO Buzzboxes conceptually are fine. There’s nothing wrong with them, the forsaken are shown to have something similar in the Silverpine questline in Gilneas. The reason they’re hated isn’t because of the lore but because

Obahar murmurs something into his Buzzbox.
Zhantharion's Buzzbox beeps as a message is recieved.

Which gets especially annoying when several people in a guild or group are in one spot, all of them get the addon spewing out the message recieved text both from a player outside the immediate vicinity and from the player(s) responding to that message.

Back on-topic, I’m not sure if we had any PTR info on the man’ari quests that already got shown and I just missed it, but if that whole plot was kept under lock and key until it reached the live servers then we won’t have long to wait. The US folk should be sharing the quest info about by the evening, and obviously we’ll have access to it tommorow. I’m curious to see how this will be justified and I’m curious to see what concepts people come up with - both good and bad.

I think it could be cool to see some repentant or remorseful man’ari who were forced into it (with the choice being serve the Legion or die) trying to justify themselves to other draenei though, especially because that could cause some in-fighting between non-man’ari draenei. Draenei A wants to kill them all, draenei B wants draenei A to chill out a bit but doesn’t like them either, draenei C mentions something about the light being compassionate only to be punched in the face by draenei A - assuming that’s a viable concept from what Blizzard show us in the man’ari questline.

Good stuff.

The compromise is that the redeemed are readmitted to society but draenei C gets to bless them and then A gets to sock them in the jaw. One at a time. B gets to do the paperwork.

While not an main/RP char really, I am conjuring up a villainous Man’ari Eredar to serve as a long time foe with the potential for unlikely allyship, depending on the player(s) decisions.

Being able to give her a proper ingame visualization rather than a raid marker is fantastic.

If I would make a Eredar, it would be one who turned to the Holy Light to repent, become Vindicator, and make his fellow Man’ari Eredar repent, forcefully or not…
