Relationship status between Belf/Nelf with the Illidari

What I wouldn’t have given for a throwaway line of ‘and if you protect them, Slayer, I’ll kill you too’ - but that’s a footnote on a long list of changes I’d make to various pieces of writing in this game :v

You: fighting for your home faction
Me, an intellectual: starting a demon moon colony so the popo don’t take me back to the clink

The important thing to remember is that the Illidari are a bunch of NEEEERDS!

OG Demon Hunters are the only ones that matter, don’t @me because I CAN’T READ, no eyes remember?

I don’t think there are any Demon Hunters that Illidan did not have an explicit hand in training. He was the first, and he trained everyone else - every DH is either Illidari or ex-Illidari.

I think Illidan inspired the original Demon Hunters - IE the likes of Altruis and other WC3 ones - because, as far as I know, he was imprisoned before he could actually “train” anyone?

To me at least that seemed to be the entire reason Altruis isn’t such a big Illidan fan as whats-his-face the Blood Elf ultra-nerd.

Altruis was also an actual Illidari, in the sense that he joined Illidan in Outland before betraying him, but I can’t find anything that says Illidan trained him.

He trained a few disciples before he was imprisoned, from what I’ve read.

The only example of someone not explicitly trained either by Illidan or a disciple of his that we know of is Ilysanna Ravencrest, who says:

I go now to find [Illidan], to walk in his footsteps and learn what I can about our enemy. Where this path will lead, I do not know. But I will do whatever I must to avenge my father and save our race from extinction.

Not clear whether she follows him in the literal sense or becomes a student but either way she followed Illidan’s lead. “every DH is either Illidari or ex-Illidari” is a simplification but basically there aren’t any demon hunters who didn’t learn the art from either Illidan or someone he taught.

I don’t think at this point the Night Elves are in any position to be choosers
Before the war ended, their situation was worse than the Blood Elves’ during TBC - They need all the help they can get.

Edit: Did a little spell-checking. English isn’t my strong point, which is a little embarrassing since it’s my primary - and only - language.

Only Illidan or Illidari trained by Illidan would know how to conduct the ritual.

Also, there is plenty of reason Altruis could dislike Illidan. He said he was no different to the Legion by the time he became Lord of Outland.

Some reasons to hate Illidan / think he’s a Legion pawn / is as bad as the Legion:

  • He let his Illidari (naga, satyr) raze Nendis, a night elven town.
  • Let his Illidari corrupt furbolg around Nendis.
  • Illidan produced more fel orcs with the blood of Magtheridon
  • Illidan let his naga enslave Broken in Zangarmarsh
  • Illidan let his Dragonmaw enslave Netherdrakes
  • Killing all ambushing Watchers and Broken in Outland, then flying up into the skies laughing as he tore their souls from their bodies to open a portal to Nathreza
  • Murder of his Moonguard + siphoning their souls
  • Creation of the Well of Eternity
  • "Hear me now, you trembling mortals! I am your lord and master! Illidan reigns supreme!" - Illidan

And this is only before/during BC.

Don’t forget that he tried to steal literally all the water on Outland so he could have total control of the population.

That’s a good one.

Controlling the supply and making a second Well of Eternity - he’s done some real goofs over the years

I think the distinction between Illidari and non-Illidari Demon Hunters is that the Illidari are those trained by post-demonification Illidan in Outland, or who joined him there (like Altruis and the three Night Elf instructors we kill).

We do know that there were Demon Hunters in Kalimdor that learned through scrolls and the like rather than from Illidan personally, such as the guy who was killed by Maiev and we fight his Ghost in Cataclysm-Darkshore.

Maybe Illidan published a manifesto before Malfurion hauled him off to jail? Maybe we should call the non-Illidari Demon Hunters “Illidanists” to differentiate them…

That reminds me of the United States trying to invent a weapon to vaporize the water supply of their enemies in desert environments, and if there’s anything Star Wars has taught me it’s that the United States is the pinnacle of evil tyranny.

The point is that the teachings must originate from Illidan. How you receive those (writings, someone who is familiar with it) doesn’t matter. He doesn’t have to have trained you personally, but its -his- teachings. His path to becoming a demon hunter is so unique + there is nothing in lore stating that anyone else figured out a ritual independently.
