Edit: based on other topics, this seems to be an issue regarding MacOS 15.0.1 combined with World of Warcraft. A work-around is to disable the Application Firewall in MacOS as even specifically allowing WoW, BNet, etc. does not help. But for users who have Company-policies active, this is not possible (besides of the undesirable nature of the work-around).
Edit2: For me personally it helped to remove Third Party Security Software completely. While it’s said that disabling Network Extensions may do the trick: Repeated Error Code: WOW51900319 - #33 by Cubbins-ravencrest
Since last Friday I’ve been getting disconnects at least every hour.
Usually just pressing the “reconnect” button works, followed by logging back in on a character. Sometimes this has to be done twice, as the loading doesn’t finish and I’m tossed back to the character screen. However, in M+ it seems to be worse, as I can get into a real disconnection-loop (disconnect → reconnect → login on character → logged in → disconnect after 1-3 seconds, repeats 2-4 times it seems).
So, the troubleshooting guides were followed:
What has been tried (often several times):
- Restart PC (well, Macbook) and Modem/Router (with some minutes in between); done, several times
- Update addons, done
- Disable addons, done
- Reset UI (WTF-folder, Cache-Folder and Interface-folder renamed to their respective name +Old, relaunched the game, done
- Reinstall the game, completely purged everything. done.
- Swapped from 5 Ghz to 2.4 Ghz for the sake of testing, done.
- Swapped to a wired connection, done.
- Ran connectivity tests; to the named Blizzard endpoints (in one of the guides, some TracePath test was mentioned) for WoW in Europe; averaging 28 ms, no packet loss, this even WHILE the disconnections happened. Overall, latency isn’t the issue, that always remains good. It really is just a random server-disconnect. A continues connectivity-test to the other side of this planet; same, 14ms average, no drops, no hickups, nothing; it just works.
- In the advanced section of a troubleshooting guide, a mention of resetting cvars was present ( /console cvar_default), done
- Using a VPN connection to test a different ISP (and point of entry towards the Blizzard AS), done.
- Disabled the antivirus suite, done
- Cleaned the NS-cache, renewed the DHCP lease, etc, done
- Also repaired WoW a couple of times, but since re-installing doesn’t help either … not really worth mentioning, but done
- Checked for updates (WoW as well as OS), all up-to-date, done
- Close down all programs; check, done
- Resetting some network devices, changing nameservers for the sake of testing, done
- Gave my user administrative rights, to make sure it’s not some odd permission issue, done
- Moved the WoW install from $home/Applications to /Applications, done
Some notable things, when/after disconnecting the following things can (but not always) happen:
- Client logs (in the _retail/logs folder) are often almost all cleaned out completely (Zero bytes). This is odd, as logs are there to mainly debug, if something odd happens…they should actually NEVER be cleared. This is imo a big red flag indicating some client-issues, not network issues.
- In-game settings tend to get reverted to a previous state, but not always and not always very synchronous either. Enable action-bars? They’re disabled after a disconnect. Disable the mount-effects? Same. Un-check the network-settings (for speedy connections), same.
And these points, actually, make me suspect that it’s not a simple disconnect from the server but some odd client<>server synchronisation issue.
Some other worthy mentions
- Other Macbook on the same network has zero issues, so a general ISP-issue is close to ruled out
- Prior to Friday I don’t even recall when I had the last disconnect
- Otherwise my connection seems stable, with no packet loss, and if I’m on Discord - there is not a single hickup while the disconnects happen.
- Reconnecting usually goes fast, immediate even.
- Battle.net client doesn’t seem to disconnect.
- I tend to be the only affected on when doing group content, even when playing together with someone who’s on the same local network.
For completeness:
- Server: Any. Emeriss, Darksorrow/Genjuros/Neptulon, Silvermoon
- Character: Any.
- Device: Macbook Air M2, not optimal, but on “fair” settings it worked fine prior to Friday (edit: MacOS 15.0.1)
- Location: Sweden
- ISP: Bahnhof
- Video card: That will be the Apple M2-integrated GPU
- Description: above
So I’m at a loss, no idea anymore what to do to resolve this.
