I currently sit @2.4k RIO so no, I am not even close to R1 but I still feel like I have pretty good understanding of the spec in m+ situations. If the stuff bellow has some false statements, please correct me.
So lets talk about the problems ret have in m+
Aggro
Yes it is a real problem. As a ret you better play with rogue or hunter, otherwise you will have lots of aggroproblems while bursting. If there is no rogue or hunter in your group In many cases it isn’t even enough that you wait +10 seconds before starting to burst as so much of your dmg comes from your 8s burst windows. Rets have 2 bubbles that resets aggro, right? No. It only transfers your aggro for the duration of the bubble which means after bubble drops you are dead. Also obviously bubble wont be up for every pull.
Group utility
Rets simply has none of the good ones. This is and has been singlehandedly the biggest problem of ret in m+. Literally none of your utility abilities is good enough to make a difference. You have freedom, BoP, Sac, LoH and devo aura. There are some useful spots to use freedom, but those are mainly for selfcasting except couple niche places like NW last boss. Bop also usually goes for yourself as mentioned to help you with your enormous aggroproblems. If you sometimes don’t need bop yourself there are couple of places to bop someone else, mostly in sanguine. But what about bopping tank in necrotic weeks? Yes, that is a thing, but first of all it 100% requires a premade and yeah… no one plays on necrotic weeks anyways Sac then… it is kind of good don’t get me wrong but you need a premade to use it properly. LoH might save your tank sometimes if you use it right, problem is that it has enormous cooldown. Devotion aura is groupwide flat 3% dmg decrease, better than nothing if you don’t already have a paladin in your group since every aura except devo is useless. In conclusion the main problem with ret’s group utility is that no one, I repeat NO ONE is going to invite you to group because they need something you provide. Oh and don’t forget you play Kyrian as 50% of the playerbase so no one will need you because of your covenant either.
Defencives/selfhealing
Ret is a hybrid class, yet it is one of the worst classes to mitigate dmg. Healing isn’t good either. Word of glory is great, but at the same time it destroys your dps, which you especially don’t want in m+. Shield of vengeance is an absorb shield with huge cd compared to the absorb it provides. FoL isn’t that good either even if you played selfless healer while using your procs with 100% efficiency. That is kind of all when it comes to reactive defencives, since you usually need your bubbles for bursting because of above mentioned reasons.
Dps
Overall Id say its in the middle of pack, not bad but definitely not good. Higher keys you go, worse you will feel about your 5 hardcapped aoe. You will stand in the corner like a kid without his favourite toy in those 10+ mob pulls where boomies, mages, monks etc are pulling tons of dmg. We will see how this changes in 9.1.5, depends entirely on the scaling. Only good thing about ret’s dmg currently is that majority of it is an on demand dmg as it is tied to “one minuters”. When you master your cd usage, you will deal good dmg when it is needed (this however doesn’t translate to overall dps which everyone stares in pugs, so you better play with premade). My opinion about ret’s dps might be optimistic since I have seen many ppl judging it as trash and tbh that is not far fetched either… I can’t post links here so can’t link the performance of ret in m+ according to Warcraft Logs but I can tell you, it is the very bottom one.
Mobility
Lets not even talk about that, everyone already knows how bad it is
So what is good then?
I can’t come up with other good things compared to other specs than that ret has excellent on demand dmg and is fun to play.
I hope this thread brings some discussion about ret’s health in m+ situations.
