I keep hearing how bad ret paladins are…
is this true???
i mean they might not top the charts but are they still viable and worth leveling one up as a dps???
would i still get to raid? in pugs since i dont have a guild yet…
or are they litterly the worst dps class and not even worth bothering??

They are worst dps, on par with balance druid. Except balance druid is better healer than ret so absolutely no reason to bring ret, ever.

Don’t bother. Make warrior instead.
If want to raid just don’t make some dps specs like Pala/feral-Boomie/Hunter for high raiding.
If you want to just play the game then do it.
But don’t get mad If you don’t get any invite for dungeons/raids. If you want to play Paladin in any case then do Holy, is super healer.
For dps melee go rogue or warrior. The only viable melee specs in classic for raiding

Depends what your objective is.
You want to appear on Warcraft Logs? No it’s not.
You want a place in a hardcore speedrun guild? Also no.
Want to join a casual guild progressing at its own pace and willing to show as much effort as anyone else in the guild? Yes. You still won’t top the meters, but you can find a guild.

Considering some people are yammering about the Instanced conttent being too easy in the ultimately efficient (and hence boring) set-ups, some might see The Light and bring some variety in the roster.
Personally, I would think it funny if an all-Paladin crew started downing Bosses. In levelling context that should be quite possible I wager. Heck, toss in some Druids as well.

If you were a min/max player I don’t think you’d be asking this to begin with. If I’m right in that, play what you find interesting. I’m currently leveling Ret and having an amazing time - the class fantasy is phenomenal with the damage output coupled with utility. The durability in world PVP is also hilarious so STV was an absolute blast, and that same durability makes tougher content like elite quests soloable within an equal level range if you’re well-geared and popping cooldowns.
If you end up wanting to go hard on raiding down the line, there’s nothing stopping you from getting a respec. Classic is more about the journey than the destination anyway

Ret is the best spec for leveling and it’s pretty damn good in PvP specially vs all those fotm mages.
They don’t bring much to the table in raids that holy doesn’t already have so don’t expect any invites to the try hard cookie cutter guilds.
Min/max is useless in Classic, the content is super easy. Don’t let your experience be ruined by all these min/max noobs, play what you enjoy.
There are guilds out there that invite all specs and don’t give AF about finishing raids 10 minutes faster.

True.
For me personally what really helps is the mindset that you are a Paladin first and formost.
This means you are more dureable that most other characters of a similar level, more of an ‘Iron Man’-type of boxxer than a heavy-hitter. Often you will be the last (wo)man down, keeping a hard Mob from resetting long enough for your compatriots to return from the Spirit Healer in time.
Also, chuck those Blessings and Purifies around. You are a beacon of The Light, and everybody likes them.
On the nitty-gritty aspect, like most classes pick opponents/situations that make the most of your abilities.
Spiders for example are laughable threats against Dwarven Paladins, their Poison and Disease attacks are pointless against you (Purify and if need be Racial) and in the rare situation Webbing is a problem whilst soloing, Blessing of Freedom gets rid of those.
And of course if all else fails, an Arthurian Fighting Withdrawal in bubbly-mode will keep your wallet safe.

Play what you want. I am arcane mage, doing arcane missiles all day long, i like it, my dps is same or higher, sometimes lower than the frost guys on my level in duengeons. But play anything you like. It isnt a big deal really.

If you want to play a retri paladin, do not expect any raid group to give you gear. A warrior can and will do around 2 or 3 times more dmg, so it is also a valid decision.

in pve they are pretty terrible. retbomb in pvp however can 1shot things if you’re willing to spam /sit macro
Balance druid on pve you mean? This is true. But in pvp? Chezz you know how many dps do the starfire? one of the biggets crits on vanilla (can be over 3500 with a 3sec cast. and a plus of a 1000 moonfire crit)

Raiding will be a breeze at 60, so you dont have to worry at all about the spec you want to play.
There will always be a spot for a ret, enhance, shadow, feral, etc., mainly because people are just far more decent than 15 years ago and ultimately it will be more or less a stomp (pretty much proven by those private server guys killing Ragnaros even under lvl 60)
Only thing you should not expect is to pump out the most damage, when you pick up a hybrid class in Classic the biggest use of you is with your different support capabilities, like offhealing or your blessing/totems, which give good benefits.

Why take a ret doing 200 dps when you have a billion mages/rogues / wars doing double the dmg that want to raid?

For 99% of players, no.
You CAN make it work (as Esfand has proven) but the hoops you have to jump through with regards to farming consumables makes it pretty lame. Even then, you still won’t come close to competing with well geared Warriors and Rogues.
Basically, it’s a waste of time unless you’re totally dedicated and happy with that dedication only being rewarded by mediocrity.
If you look at esfands logs from pservers he absolutly did not make it work. I looked at a few of his most recent raids, he was barely above tank dps
