The problem is they have so many characters they want to give some story to, they have to leave some of them out or give them less screen time. Such as Jaina being absent in Wod and Legion so that Khadgar could come in and be the bestest mage ever, and then it reversed because Jaina had a big role in BfA and partly in SL.
I agree but i still stand by my point that at least in BfA and SL the balance seems a bit off (at least from allinace pov).
Since i need to get going, let me just say that i´m happy that i could get my point across without it being a sh**show and that we actually have some common ground. Hope when i get back tothe thread it´s sstill respectful guys!
Ah yes but from my PoV the balance has and is always off ![]()
This post feels quite a bit like bait considering how sensitive and contentious this topic has been in recent years. But since you yourself seem to be tip-toeâing around on eggshells, Iâll assume itâs made in good faith.
There have always been strong men in Warcraft, good or evil. Arthas, Uther, Kael, Thrall, Muradin, Illidan, Malfurion, etc.
Just as there have always been strong women in Warcraft, good or evil. Jaina, Tyrande, Maiev, Sylvanas, Shandris, etc.
Were they rolemodels? Probably not, some of them were villains like Arthas, KelâThuzad and Sylvanas. Some were anti-heroes likes Illidan, Maiev and to some extent Tyrande.
But they were all respectable as characters, had strong agency and took action when needed. They led from the front, men and women both. There is a reason people buy cosplay outfits for these characters.
The modern characters really are the white bread of writing, with no real agency or purpose or no drive. They feel like confused youngsters living at home with their cat and roommate who doesnât clean so they just end up doing it all because theyâre not assertive enough to speak up. Attending a therapy session about how they donât know what to do with their lives. Itâs really kind of pathetic to watch.
Iâll admit the male characters got it extra bad. Men who arenât as the above are conveyed as an array of âproblematicâ things. Every assertive trait in men such as determination, grit, conviction, directness, passion and action has been portrayed as something that leads to bad things. It makes the men in WoW look either stupid or weak, and nothing in between.
The women donât fare much better mind you; with a veritable army of stoic women being portrayed as girlbosses that come off as extremely forced and bland. Often berating others around them, acting snarky or being a therapist.
Ultimately there is nothing here to be inspired by or even being interested in. For men who seek to find âThat Thingâ in a male character - men understand what I mean, like seeing a big rock fall in a pond and going âHell yea!â - we look at these characters and think âGet it together man, Iâm vicariously ashamed here.â So many of WoWâs men are kinda⌠losers.
Meanwhile all the women are strong matriarchs who have no finesse, no sense of empathy, no emotional compass and no intuition. The traits that are uniquely female and less present in men are smoothed over to make room for yet another strong woman who could be easily confused with the 10 strong women leaders before her.
So yea, look. I urgently need somebody at Blozzard to start taking pages out of the old book, and actually write some characters that act like wilful protagonists that we are eager to see on screen and fewer âAnduinâs therapy session with Uncle Khadgar in a wheelchair (why? We can resurrect the dead but canât heal legs?) about inner turmoil, hummus and yoga.
Women in videogames tend to be designed in either one of two ways.
âSexy damsels in distress to be rescued by an overmuscled stallion with long blonde hair and a heroic manly poseâ
Or âincredibly overpowered yet doesnât have a clue what sheâs doing, why sheâs doing it, and whoâs telling her to do it. (usually a male)â
WoW seems to be stuck in the second option lately. Their idea of âbalanceâ is to emasculate every single male NPC and elevate the female characters to god like status yet absolutely clueless.
But.
Thats how one too many idi.. (gamers)⌠want their female characters.
If theyâre not acting out waifu fantasies then theyâre incredibly insecure about their masculinity and the idea that a strong female character without being one of the two setreotypes terrifies them.
Just hang around the forums a few months next time a female character dares to do something somewhat normal like run around and kill a few things with her clothes on.
The forums will either be screaming âOMG WOW HAS GONE WOKE!â or theyâll blabber on about body 1 or body 2.
lol⌠Never been to California have you?
At the age of 12 I would sincerely hope that he would know where to look for positive role models in his offline life and that characters in a fantasy video game are many things but not role models to guide your life plansâŚ
You mean the sunset. Itâs ok to have strong characters but when there is too much focus on it and every tom, dick and harry is spewing out the same garbage - its stop selling.
Yes
if you feel threatened by bfas âbalanceâ then tbh no its not much different.
get a grip
I meant dawn because I feel like itâs just the beginning
Is that why more than 99% of threads created end up in forum wars?
Itâs over too many failed franchises and shut down studios. This ideology is great but not when it becomes forced not so great. Keep in mind that these plots are planned in advance so once the process is started they canât just end it midway and leave a half baked story but either way they damned if they do and they damned if they donât. The difference is which side is in the majority and will keep the ship sailing.
He didnât cheat. There was no agreed rule that he couldnât use his shaman abilities. Priormakgoras discussed that separately
My friend, I started having concerns about the story since the end of WotLK. I canât say Iâm concerned anymore though, I completely resigned on that front.
That would be Ideal yes but in reality that´s not an option for a lot of young boys/men therefore i think it is important to have characters in videogames and other mediums to fill that role.
I for example learned more about being a man from characters like Goku (be humble and keep growing), Vegeta (be proud of who you are and strife to be better), Luffy (never stop chasing your dreams), Roronoa Zoro (discipline) and many more then from my drunkard old man.
But the Thread, as Vilvert predicted, sadly derailed anyway.
The new expansion and even after that the titan expansion will have same path .
That ship has also passed long ago . I think anduin father varian wrynn was last good role model on male side . Even these days I fail to get attached to a female cast npc in the story of wow .
Like others have said . Trying to focus on lore and trying to make meaning out of it will just lead to more disappointment .
What story? The WoW story has been trash since for everâŚ
Simply put, an MMO is a really, really bad medium to tell stories. Nothing blizzard does will change that fact. So why even bother to be honest?
I mean⌠take this expansion that has a more streamlined story:
- We started 2 years ago with TWW with the initial campaign. 2 weeks of questing.
- The followup to that story was given to us 7 months later in S2. 1 week of questing.
- The followup to that story was 6 months later. 1 week of questing.
- And we will get a pre-patch 6 months after that with 1 week of questing before Midnight.
Look at the timeline of that. Imagine for a moment that was a book. Or a TV series. You watch Episode 1. And you need to wait 6 MONTHS to watch Episode 2. I can tell you right now that show is DOOMED. No matter how good it is.
That is WoW. The story is simply irrelevant. Pointless. Blizzard tries to fit it into this âmodelâ but they clearly fail at it. That is why when you show up in BFA and do it all at once itâs all a convoluted mess.
Point is⌠dont play wow for the story. It sucks. Just⌠level up to 80. Enjoy TWW and Midnight as itâs presented to you. And ignore everything that happened prior to that.
There are few female characters left who are well written. Alleria is annoying, I did not care about Telia and they ruined Sylvanas. Jaina has enough trauma to be left alone from more writing.
this is the saddest quote ive read since a long time.
and you know? is sad cause is true. 100% true.
And now sorry i need to go to feed my bees in oasis
->Minority
->51% of population
And you can normally portray women without downing men, but that is not the goal of modern devs, they hate men, all strong men have to die, toxic masculinity blablabla
They portray women as men (called âstrong womanâ).. meanwhile woman can be strong without being absolutely manly and unrealistic.
This isnt about women at all, its about degrading men. Just like feminism hasnt âfreed womenâ, it enslaved them, enjoy working 9h a day for the rest of your life.
