The raid has not become less forgiving, they have actually added new levels of difficulty. there is now a version of the raid that can be completed easily in small chunks to allow people who do not have a lot of continuous time to see it. There, conversely is a Mythic version of the raid for the people that were not challenged by the normal or heroic versions.
The idea this is coming from is; speaking from my personal experience. As a new player in legion, and also late on max level in season 1, i still was able to get to curves on emerald nightmare. Nighthold i farmed like crazy on heroic in a 5 month-season. Again; as a new player (healer). Tomb was farmable but i didnt put that much time in reclears otherwise same story. Argus real life hitted, i moved and more things happened. Still able to get curves without too much effort.
Now i am experienced, got my game setup way better. Know what i am doing. And i am kind of not able to even reach the last boss in a long season. We literally got curves in the last week of s3 raid. We almost gave up in s2 and s1 was almost as close as difficult.
People want to keep doing the thing they did before. It is not cool being able to farm heroic, and now having to do normal.
I am not agreeing with the “excluding from participating” though. I am agreeing it is way harder, which means succeeding is less. But there is a big difference between “participating” and “succeeding”.
What I meant is that over time raid mechanics since Legion begin increasing in complexity, and while this did not affect heroic difficulty equally across the tiers mechanical overlaps did start showing up since BFA which made some heroic fights irritating to say the least.
Eventhough it may not be the best example, but Stone Legion Generals with their minor mechanic overlaps were something that can cause headaches to many groups (atleast I reckon that is why they neutered the ability entirely on heroic, as Wicked Blade use to splash on those around you).
Even from BFA you can think of bossfights like Azshara from Eternal Palace as well (or god forbid Kil’Jaeden), not to mention there are a few bosses where someone messing up a mechanic more often than not will wipe your group (Xanesh football minigame, triggering multiple traps on Painsmith, failing your rune on Fatescribe or picking up puddles on Sylvanas at a bad time during Banshee’s Fury). I will not include Sepulcher here, as that was a tier where even Blizzard admitted they went over the line.
It is something that one can expect on the highest possible difficulty, but these are also mechanics that both make the fights more interesting for some, while harder and stressful for others.
It is one of the reasons why, in my personal opinion, it become harder to get into pug raids. If the difficulty of the content increases less skilled players look to get in groups with those with the most experience, to ensure a smooth run. That is what I mean on community, as while there are guilds that are affected they have their ways to somewhat mitigate this, and they have way more patience compared to pugs.
