Roleplay Guide: Dracthyr

Greetings, members of the Argent Dawn community! With Dragonflight closing in, I thought I’d go ahead and create a roleplay guide for the upcoming playable race, the Dracthyr! I wish to note that Dragonflight is still in Alpha, so many things are subject to change, but I will be drawing upon what we know as of yet, with some speculations sprinkled in. That being said, SPOILERS AHEAD! If you do not wish to be spoiled, look away now!

History:

The dracthyr are not a natural race to Azeroth, but an experiment created by Neltharion the Earth-Warder. Forged with the essence of the dragonflights and the scrappiness and adaptability of the mortals that were growing to inhabit the young world, Neltharion created the dracthyr to be the ultimate soldier. Unlike the experiments of Nefarian and Sintharia that yearned for a result, but twisted by the madness of the Old Gods, the dracthyr were born from the benevolence and wisdom of a pre-corrupt Neltharion.

However, during a great battle that ensued long ago, the blue dragonflight saw fit to keep the dracthyr locked away in stasis on the Forbidden Reach, overseen by the dragon Lapisagos. Due to this nature of a danger locked away on an island out of reach, many saw the island as a place of legend and danger, especially the local tuskarr. It is unknown exactly why the blues locked the dracthyr away, but a possible answer is that when Neltharion betrayed the Aspects, Malygos had them sealed away to prevent them possibly being used as a weapon by his traitorous brother.

Ten thousand years have passed, and the Dragon Isles have begun to awaken. The magical stasis around some of the dracthyr has been broken, and now they emerge from their slumber to break their kind free of their prisons, only to find that new enemies have arisen, especially the Primalists, who seek to free Raszageth, the Storm-Eater and leader of the Primal Incarnates! The dracthyr fought hard and with great vigilance, but their weakened numbers meant that the Primalists were successful, and Raszageth has been let loose upon the world, so they must travel to the mortal kingdoms to warn them of the great danger and prepare to fight beside them in the battles to come!

General Information:

The dracthyr, as stated before, were experiments of Neltharion meant to harness the power of all five dragonflights, yet possess the will and adaptability of mortals. They are soldiers above all, so no matter what else they choose to be, they will always be soldiers first and foremost. They are bound by a great loyalty to dragonkind, yet with the knowledge that Neltharion had gone mad and later died, some have broken this vow and sought their own destiny.

There are many dracthyr, but every now and then, some arise to go beyond their kin. These are the Evokers, those who can use the abilities of all five dragonflights and weyrns at a whim with incredible skill. The journey along this path is long, and not all dracthyr shall complete it, but those that do shall be honoured with the title of Evoker.

Dracthyr society is split into Weyrns, each being branch of dracthyr that specializes in a certain aspect of warfare: attacking, defending, healing, tactics and infiltration. It is with these traits that the dracthyr, when united, form the ultimate army. Weyrns are lead by Scalecommanders, dracthyr who are chosen and personally trained by Neltharion himself for the role. When the Scalecommanders call, the dracthyr answer. Yet the dracthyr within a weyrn are more than kindred in arms, they are closer than that. They shall be as close as clutch-mates, a bond that will never be broken that is forged by the honour and duty of serving dragonkind.

Dracthyr come in various colours, including those seen outside the main five dragonflights. While some may choose to identify with the flight of their scale colour, the dracthyr’s true homes are their own kin and their weyrns, a flight of their own to a degree. One defined not by appearance but by loyalty and by duty.

Weyrns:

The Obsidian Warders: this Weyrn is charged with being the aegis of the Earth-Warder, an immovable object that protects the strongholds of the black dragonflight. Whether to guard the skies or reinforce draconic legions on the ground, this is their duty. They are lead by Scalecommander Azurathel, and chose to side with the Alliance.

The Dark Talons: this Weyrn is charged with being the fury of the black dragonflight, harrying their foes, toppling leaders and crushing their will. For every one in their ranks, ten foes shall fall. They are the elite aggressive fights of the Weyrns, lead by Scalecommander Cindrethresh, and chose to side with the Horde.

(Edict: Dark Talons - Wowpedia - Your wiki guide to the World of Warcraft (fandom.com))

The Healing Wings: this Weyrn consists of the greatest healers of the dracthyr, calling upon the restorative powers of the dragonflights to mend the wounds of their kin so they can perform their duty. They have fallen under hard times during the siege of the Forbidden Reach, and chose to remain behind to aid their kin still fighting there, and to rescue any survivors they find. They are lead by Scalecommander Viridia.

The Ebon Scales: Little is known of this Weyrn, yet it is known that their leader, Scalecommander Sarkareth, refuses to take orders from even their fellow Scalecommanders. Upon learning that Neltharion is deceased and feeling betrayed by dragonkind, he renamed his Weyrn the Sundered Flame, and they have struck out on their own to find their own destiny, likely with hostile intent.

There is a fifth Weyrn, lead by Scalecommander Emberthal, yet her Weyrn met a tragic fate. When the Primalists attacked, they utterly annihilated Emberthal’s Weyrn, leaving her as the only survivor. She has chosen to remain behind on the Forbidden Reach to aid the Healing Wings. Given her role as Head Scalecommander, her Weyrn likely focused on tactics and strategy.

This has been my guide to the Dracthyr, and I hope to see what people do with their characters! While this is more of a lore summary than my previous entries, I hope it gives people information to determine what their characters will be like!

Bit early days for a rp guide on Dracys, but cant knock the attempt atleast, just odd imo to formulate a rp guide for a race/class none of us have rp’d “correctly” yet due to such little info

I mean sure, but as a lore summary, I think it works well - unless the information above gets changed before launch, it’s all very useful for people working out how to make and play their future Dracthyr.

Well done, Skrauhg!

Yeah its not a bad start for sure, if anything changes, can always be updated
Edit: One thing I did take from this guide, which I hope Blizz doesnt decide to change is the weryns seem tied to the Black Dragonflight which is super dope for me personally as I wanted a Black Dragonflight aligned Dracy

Really nice guide! I am hoping some more details will be trickling out about their backstory and the details with the blues as the Alpha goes on. I especially like the bit where some do identify with their given Flights that their colours associate with, I didn’t see anything written about that though so could I get a source for future reference?

I really am looking forward to Dracthyr and will be RPing one at launch, it’s gonna be an uphill scenario I imagine with the influx of all the people doing the same for the first few months. Also I’ve not seen much Alpha footage as I am trying to keep from spoilers but are the Dracthyr listed as any other classes? Evoker as a class seems to be too elite for everyone to be RPing.

Thanks! Concerning their associations, I ran out of room in the post to clarify! The Healing Wings, for example, tend to have bronze and green scales in the alpha, and the Preservation evokers use Bronze and Green magic to perform their task. The other weyrns tend to follow a similar pattern, but nothing is fixed! Can be a green Devastation evoker, or a blue Preservation if you want!

Knowing the stormy influx of new toy rushers and AD’s usual response to something new, I’ll give it a few months.

Disagreed tbh. It gives me more want to start early. Establish my character before the stigma sets in, rather than having to push back against a negative reputation months later.

Guides like this are really helpful for that. Letting people get details of their character sorted before the class drops properly so they don’t join the sea of Infinite Dragon RPers and sex pest lizardmen.

In my opinion Dracthyr are far more easier to roleplay then Death Knights or Demon Hunters, especially since they’re properly allowed in the cities and seem very social.
Also they’re not hated by everyone like the Death Knights in the beginning.

The alliance does. They literally are on the edge with dracthyr.

Nah, they will be harder to RP since they are way easier to murder, skin and make a leather pair of boots from.

New information coming out left and right, are you planning to keep this one updated?

For example it was Neltharion who ordered their stasis, nearly 20k (!) years ago, Malygos simply helped

Edit: Appreciate the effort btw, but seeing as it is really early days it’ll pay to keep things sharp <3

Thank you, and I did not know that! However I literally ran out of room in the first post, so I can’t actually edit it!

Question, since you seem to have done some research into Dracthyr; What are their names like?

Might be a helpful thing to cover, for people planning their Dracthyr characters.

https://wowpedia.fandom.com/wiki/Dracthyr#Notable

Based on those examples, three common features regarding Dracthyr names seem to be:

  • Their names can reference the colour of their scales. Viridia, viridian, green. Azurathel, azure, blue.
  • Their names can reference the elements associated with dragons of the same colour. Emberthal, embers, black dragons breathe fire. Cindrethresh, cinders, red dragons also breathe fire.
  • Their names often seem to the letters ‘th,’ also known as a thorn. Emberthal, Azurathel, Cindrethresh, Sarkareth.

Based on this, you can probably get a strong idea of what a lot of other Dracthyr names are going to be like.

I will never be able to take WoW’s punny names seriously.

What I find interesting is that since the Dracthyr are an artificial species, it’s likely that they all chose their names themselves, unlike any other race.
That’s, of course, not confirmed, but the only alternative is that Neltharion named each and every individual Dracthyr himself.

You’re thinking too much. Don’t set yourself up for disappointment.
