[RP] The Black Swan is hiring!

Wounds were scars, monsters were now trophies and threats were now tales to boast and sing.
The Black swan, once a dainty damsel, slept safe and sound.

But two weeks ago?

A once formidable foe now held books upright with their skull upon a captains shelf. His empty sockets felt fixed upon her as she reclined in her old leather chair.
The waters were calmed and the lands were sleeping with peace. By all means this was a captain’s chance to retire and be saved from a violent end of going down with their ship.

A black crow polished his ebon beak against the window frame and while looking past him with tired, coal framed eyes, Khalila could see the still waters. Quiet, calmed, mocking waters. Its calm and cool ignited a fever to the captains blood. It ripped her hand out to grab the nearest book and throw it out into the sea.

Its fall was utterly anticlimactic. A dull little splash. Perhaps it startled a fish below, at best. At least the crow got startled enough to change perch to the bedpost.
But the captain’s glare lingered at the rings it spread after its fall. First one, then another. And another. The soaked book began to slowly sink, and yet rings were forming over the waters. It was no storm but it was something and this something scratched the most violent and fiery side of Khalila Darling’s soul.

She rose quickly from her seat and ripped the door to her quarter open.
“Owyn! Find me some starved hunters, now!”
“Wh- now? I’m eating here!”
“Now, Owyn! It’s time to wake these waters!”

Today

“The Black Swan is a grim testament to the limits of redemption. Despite my efforts to extend mercy and reason to Captain Khalila Darling, she and her crew have chosen a path of violence and destruction. They have not only taken the lives of countless brave sailors but also inflicted untold suffering on innocent people. For the good of the realm and its people, we must put an end to their cruelty. The time for reasoning has passed; now we must act. Light willing, I will see the Black Swan brought to justice.”

OOC
We are a crew of once pirate hunters turned pirates who hunt.
We are a friendly bunch and together we create stories where we touch on comedy, horror, action, and drama. Often all in the same event! We set up a playground for you, and you decide to what extent you wish to partake and help build this playground. Build a sandcastle. Kick down another castle. Make sand-angels. Get sand in places where no one should have sand…-
While we are an old guild born in early 2017, we have been snoozing and inactive for quite some time, ‘til now. We ask everyone who joins us to consider this. We’re in the stretching and waking up to a new mornin’ phase. Fetch some coffee and hop on!

What we offer:

  • A playground for pirates with a goal to make everyone feel invited to join in the play, not obligated to or excluded from.
  • A discord full of channels both for ooc interactions and for ic interactions.
  • A manual about life aboard, your new inventory, crew and responsibilities.
  • A friendly and respectful environment.
  • Power to influence the paths the ship and crew takes, including the NPCS we use.
  • Oodles of chances to wound, scare and rattle your character.
  • Crew tattoos based on events your character manages to survive!

Oh and before we forget!

  • No level restrictions
  • No race/class restrictions aside Death knights, demon hunters, dracthyrs, warlocks, pyromaniacs and part smurf/part volvo; mix breeds.
  • Yes, we do recruit horde but with the warning that we do at times move in Alliance only areas so it may be limiting.
  • Yes, we accept alts.
  • NO, you do not need to know how to sail IRL.
  • We love questions. Throw them our way, I dare you.
  • If you’d like to work alongside us, just contact us in game.
  • If you wish to join this crew you only need to reach out to us in game or via discord. (khaliladarling)

Fair winds and much love,

Captain Darling and the Black Swan crew.

One of the best pirate guilds around! Very good bunch of people, very inclusive, good plot and the benefits of having an IC arch enemy.

Now hang them all! :pirate_flag: :parrot: :anchor:

Thank you so much :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

We do play the finest (and bloodiest) version of tag don’t we, captain?
There is no finer nemesis than the royal navy! :anchor: :lion:

We welcome Doctor Hamilton, Mister Mackarel and ‘Flickers’ on board the Black Swan! :swan:

We’re still open for new recruits, but for now we feel we have enough sawbones (medics). We hope to recruit more sailors, gunners, riggers etc. Combat experience is ideal.

Give us a poke if you want to punch a kraken in the face, become vilified by the crown, make some quick gold and/or die young.

Badass. Welcome back!

Khalila and her crew have always been a cornerstone of Booty Bay, and their pirate RP is brilliant. To plunder and fortune!

We’ve had an influx of new recruits this weekend. We welcome Jim Fisher, Digby Stonebridge and Elgan Blackfang aboard!

Tomorrow, we get off our arses and leave the Bay to do some actual piracy.

I am such a long distance fan of your character Xav, and I absolutely love the art and concept of him. Maybe one day, we’ll meet proper in game!

Tonight we set sail to continue our adventure and conflict with the navy! After that, we have sea monsters waiting to threaten us, storms to weather and many more enemies and friends lurking in the shadows!

A best of luck to the lovely new additions to our crew & many thanks of all the sweet words here!

We will return to the Bay waters soon but if anyone wants to join in on our adventures, contact us in game or on discord!

Captain Darling

The Black Swan is currently in Arathi areas after a dreadful sailing through storms and horrors. Should anyone want to meet with us in Stromgarde, just give us a lil’ nudge. We’ll be here til Wednesday/Thursday.

After that, we sail back to Boralus and Kul tiras areas!

We are still recruiting pirates; seeking swabs, sailors and gunners.
We’re also looking for supplies, so we’ll sniff after Stromgarde traders too!

First Mate Owyn Connal
:skull_and_crossbones:

The air was clear, it always was at this altitude above the cloud cover. Kai’hawk adjusted his grip on the stick as he guided the aged Skychaser to descend through the clouds. The Dwarvern pilot smiled to himself as the sight of the Arathi Highland mountains caught the early morning sun, straightening up he pointed the golden gryphon figurehead towards Stromgarde.

I’ll be seeking The Blackswan on my Dwarvern Sky Pirate here as reading this is exactly what I’m after.

There the dark beauty was sailing away after flares peppered the Arathi skies in her wake. She set course back to Kul Tiras, and with some haste it would have seemed. Perhaps not entirely unrelated to the Navy vessel nearby.

A sky pirate, interesting! You are welcome to find us in Boralus and we can talk! Just poke any of the Swans ooc if youve got questions!

Lying on his back, face toward the open sky above, the big Kul Tiran snorts himself awake with a start. Muttering to himself he moves to roll over, and then makes several panicked noises as he realises he had fallen asleep on the aftmast top. After flinging himself back onto his back and regaining his composure, he looks down at the busy deck, crowded with all his new friends and shipmates he’d met over the last week or so since signing on, and smiles. The flicking of a loose rope in the wind catches his attention, and he turns to walk out onto the yardarm far above the sea below to retrieve it. He sings as he does, his voice carrying over the wind.

“Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate’s life for me.”

The crew mourns the passing of Mister Mackarel - the pirate’s life can be deadly. But we also welcome the infamous Fernando Aldazhar, also known as the Butcher, and previously known as captain of the Resolute! Nando’s competence will be put to good use, as he serves as our new Master of Sails.

In other news, Vaelyse “Whales” is officially the new Master of Coin. We set sail on tuesday, but will be back in Boralus shortly!

Our ship is slippery with squid slurry, sailors blood and chum after a long night fighting a sea beast carrying a juicy bounty on its scaley head!
Now the horrible chores ahead burden those who are not resting in the medical bay. Butchering, swabbing, preparing…

Doesn’t this sound fun?! Join us and you too can stink like rotten fish and sweat for a minimal wage and a plethora of nightmares!

The expansion is here! Though we’re all probably exploring Khaz Algar, we continue to host RP and partake in the local IC community. And as we’ve done before, we’ll also be exploring the various group content that exists together, and help eachother with the game even outside of RP.

Want in? Give us a poke!

Skarain stood crouched on a tiny raft of conjured ice that was slowly carried away by the currents, away from the blackened hull of The Black Swan that had been her home for the past two years. In the water around her floated the remnants of her footlocker; woolen blankets, socks, spare sweaters, utterly waterlogged bandages, a treatment log slowly falling apart and bottles of medicinal remedies.

She found the destruction of perfectly serviceable equipment wasteful, but then again, she wasn’t really surprised by the emotionally driven reaction - or the disregard to even bothering to check what was in her belongings. The crew had finally found the true nature of their witch and the extent of the ‘spooky scary stuff’ she was capable of, and had understandably thrown her overboard, along with her footlocker. The thing is, witches float. That nobody bothered to check whether she sank suited her just fine.

The elder Gilnean reflected upon the years and the people she had shared quarters with, shared meals with, patched wounds, shared drinks and stories. The ferocious, angry panther-Captain. The calm and moderate ex-tidesage. The recently minted Master of Coin and ship’s songbird. The Captain’s loyal dog Bosun, and the dog’s dog Earnest. Her replacement as sawbone, Dr. Hamilton. The young radio enthusiast. That bloodthirsty ferret. The crow adored by the crew. The more stable Master Gunner and First Mate. And many more. It was a motley crew of broken, flawed people. And then there was the blackened hull itself, distancing every moment. That accursed vessel, hosting souls of the damned, demons or something yet darker within it. Dormant yet still there.

“Perhaps it was for the best”, Skarain said to the evening wind, carrying a nip of cold air down from the snow-capped peaks of Kul Tiras in the distance. “Ultimately, we were too far apart in the things we have seen, or understand”. She paused and thought a moment, ‘would things have been different if she had been more upfront?’. With a snorts and a smile, she spoke to the sharks that swam underneath the waves, perhaps wishing for a meal.

“Maybe. We shall never know. It was a great adventure, but in the end, the pay wasn’t ‘that’ good, not worth risking one’s life for. They will probably end up stuck on a reef, hunted by pirate hunters, finally confronted by the Navy, gobbled up by their own ship, or take more than they can chew while striking a merchant shipment.”.

The Worgen’s claws dug into the ice as she stood up on her tiny raft of ice. She begun the incantations to expand upon the ice. She would need more space to safely cast a translocation spell that would take her far away from here. “Perhaps it’s time to re-start that enchanting business. Maybe do some home-schooling of students. And --” with a bemused smile “-- perhaps avoid sea-travel for a while.”

As a story comes into a close, I thought I’d write my Review as a former member of The Black Swan to those who might consider giving this guild a chance. A little bit of insight on how the guild operates, based on my own observations.

The Review

The guild makes very heavy use of Discord, so if you’re allergic to the program, you should probably look elsewhere. Not only is joining Discord a requirement, it is used to pool data on attendance to events, communicate of upcoming plots, used in various OOC chatter, has regular questionnaires and much more.

The guild has an event maybe 1-2 times a week, depending on availability. The numbers online (at the time of my departure) are roughly 5-7 on most events, and there is occasionally unplanned RP between 2-4 people on some evenings. The time of events is usually starting at 20:00 ST, but variation happens.

While the management does cook up most of the event ideas and sets the course for the ship (both figuratively and literarily), the atmosphere seems to be open for ideas from members and the staff welcomes such contributions.

A lot of story happens “In the background” via an In-Character discord channel, in text-based RP. There is also another channel for Letters, another for stories written and posted on AA, and another for ‘Story so Far’ recap on RP events.

As a result, the guild is rather forgiving for someone with a busy schedule. The general feel of the guild is understanding in “RL comes first”, and has no mandated attendance requirement. The various Discord RP raffles allow for a small contribution when one has the time, and keeping track of events.

The quality of RP across the guild is generally quite high. The management has put a lot of effort into their background material, and there are quite many handouts to read. Simultaneously the papers aren’t oppressively long essays, but solid explanations and descriptions around various roles, rules and policies.

As can be read in the OP and via links, the quality is achieved through curation of the type of concept and having a conversation of suitable themes within the guild before joining. As a recommendation for those liking to keep parts of their character a secret IC, it is still advisable to communicate of those OOC in order to avoid burning bridges in the future.

A newer roleplayer should still not feel intimidated by the amount of ‘stuff’ this guild has in the background material, or the general praise around quality - and fears of inability to meet the standard. The best way to learn to roleplay is by doing, and you get better by doing, and overall this bunch of people are kind, warm and helpful – so you have nothing to worry about.

While there could be room for improvement with more communication and dialogue leading to and after the events of my own departure, the management was still polite with their use of language, so even that experience gets a passing grade.

Verdict

9/10 - would recommend

Take care folks!

Fernando steps aboard the Black Swan with a quiet confidence, his presence embodying the harshness of the desert. The days under the relentless sun have left him rugged and tanned, his skin carrying the warmth and strength of the unforgiving sands. As he mingles with the crew, he radiates a hard-earned victory, exchanging toasts, sharing drinks, and slapping shoulders with the men who now look to him with respect. The camaraderie is palpable, their laughter mingling with the night air, but beneath Fernando’s easy smiles lies a deep, unspoken resolve.

A golden hunt brings pirates back to Boralus with coin burning in their ratty old pockets. Gossip spreads of the crews fortune, songs, stories and wanting legends bubble like a witches cauldron in the dark corners of the harbor city
