DB is AoE, can hardly be considered melee range since it’s more or less the same range as scatter

Didn’t scatter work with MM hunter’s matery, though? Effectively making it larger range than the 20 yards.

Cast doesn’t matter when you pre-cc the target you’re doing it on, kinda the point of DB?

The person you db-poly has 1-2 partners on their team that often have a plenty of ways to stop the 1.4 seconds cast-time. Sure, you can get the enemy team to stack on their healer (not too likely against decent players) or get cross-cc from your teammates to secure the thing, but that definitely requires more thought than scattering into an instant freezing trap would.

Interrupt is irrelevant since you can just ring of frost instead

Maybe later into the expac, but for sure not on the current haste levels. If you get locked in the middle of a 1.4 seconds polymorph, you won’t have time to cast the 1.7 seconds ring. Those are the numbers you have at ~20% haste, and DB itself triggers a global cooldown too.
