After loading the pre-patch, I experience severe stuttering a lag, which is stronger when entering a new zone and progressively gets better but never stops.
The clip in this reddit thread is exactly what I am experiencing - https://www.reddit.com/r/wow/comments/s19lxw/constant_stuttering_while_playing_wow_cant_find_a/
This happens:
- When I play on Low settings or Ultra
- When I switch to Direct X 11 / Legacy or 12
- With addons on and off
- With “Optimize Network for Speed” on and off
- I have no open programs
- I have the latest drivers and updates
- Power plan is at Ultimate Performance
I have no network issues or any issues with other games.
CPU is around 40-50% and RAM goes to 70%.
CPU and GPU Temps are not more than 70C.
I cannot find a solution for this and it is very frustrating to pay for an expansion and subscription and not be able to play.
If anyone has any clue what to do please do say.
This is likely Blizzard’s fault as I haven’t experienced stuttering to such degree before the pre-patch.

There’s another thread for this already, but you aren’t alone. A lot of us are having a lot of FPS drops, microstrutter and lag now since pre patch, especially when loading in and moving the camera around. That video you linked is 10 months old, so I assume it’s unrelated as this lag issue has only popped up since pre patch.

Thank you!
Yep yep, the video is old and not mine, but illustrates what I experience!

Micro-stuttering is out of this world, never in my life have I experienced a game that stutters so much. I really hope they fix this!

Someone provided a ‘fix’ to it in another thread. It’s not a 100% fix as GPU usage is still skyrocketing and stutters still happen, but it is BEARABLE by 80% with this:
Open your WoW folder directory and under Retail > WTF > Config.txt paste this into the file: SET GxAllowCachelessShaderMode “0”

This is leading me to believe the stuttering is because the game is making shader caches from scratch.
I think there is some kind of issue with the max background fps and max foreground fps counter. Blizz have introduced some dynamic fps tech that lowers graphics quality if you drop below a set fps mark. By default this is 60 fps - I have reduced mine to 8 fps and stuttering seems a lot less…
Yeah, the person who provided this fix noticed that the Shader Mode was set to “1” ONLY with prepatch, setting it to “0” solves stuttering by quite a bit.
IF it is the game caching shaders from scratch, the stuttering will go away after the caching is done.
It’s possible. Doing the above fix with edding the config file, as well as disabling “target fps” completely has dramatically improved the situation.
EDIT: Further info - monitoring my PC, I see massive spikes in the usage of my system drive whenever the game stutters. It is tied to the game, as my PC runs usually smoothly and this didn’t use to happen before. My system drive is an entirely separate physical drive, which leads me to believe this is tied to the game writing on the disk. Probably just caching stuff, it should be good once it’s all done writing. I hope it’s not the anti-cheat being too aggressive.

Yep, agree.
In order for them to even create the CachelessShader variable they must have had changed their caching system, so there’s something really messy happening in the background even if that variable is 0 or 1.
It’s like the code is either going into a fail-safe where it re-loads assets.
But this is nothing, you should see the 64GB memory leaks Mac users are having.

Fixed this issue by adding this to Config.
Thank you!
But Blizz, please patch it anyways.

Yepp, pretty much unplayable at the moment.
This made it playable! Thanks!
SET GxAllowCachelessShaderMode “0”
This worked for me as well! Along with the issues brought by the new UI, the game was nearly unplayable until I found this fix. It is, however, sad that many of us had to go through the forums to find the solution instead of getting a blue post.
On a side note, it would be great if we can get an option to choose between the actual classic UI (not the one currently labeled “Classic” on live servers) and the new, customizable UI. The new one simply feels too modern and out of sync of the high fantasy WoW experience. That’s why I think that we should all be given the option to choose our preferred UI, i.e. the one we had literally until yesterday and the one we are forced into now.
