So I recently hit rank 6 on my rogue which means I have access to buy the full epic gear for gold right now, would it work to buy the gear/weapons, and then when pre-patch comes it should be available for use right? Rather spend my gold right now than farming marks later.
You answered your own question.
If you Google search this question the general consensus is that you will start to replace the R14 PVP gear around level 66, the weapon may last you until level 68-70. Consensus concluded it may be worth farming for the weapon if you are badly geared, i.e. a fresh level 60, so you can level faster with a better weapon until you replace it at 70, consensus on the armour was that it wasn’t worth the time/effort again given that you will replace it around level 66 anyway. The consensus therefore concluded you would be better off prioritising farming of professions and gold going into TBC than the PVP gear.
You can’t buy pvp items without having the needed rank though?

rank 6, full epic gear?

You need rank 10/11 for the first 6 set, 12/13 for some better pieces
and rank14 for the weapons.
In prepatch they remove the rank requirement but the gear requires a LOT of marks and flat honor which is harder to get and is then used as a currency
At Rank 6 you get to see all the epic gear and weapons at the vendor, but you can only buy them, once you hit the appropriate rank. I actually forgot to buy some of the stuff with one of my chars once, while I was Rank 10, sucks to be me.^^

rank 6 you can’t buy anything so no but you could grind out the ranks and pay with gold
What I am saying is I am rank 6 which lets me buy the epic gear but not wear it, the idea is that it should be equipable right when pre-patch hit.
It most definately does not let you buy the epic gear. Try. It doesn’t work. You can see it, but not buy it. Once you own it, however, you can wear it, even if you don’t currently have that rank anymore.
