I agree. I have an issue when it’s based on paid systems (lootboxes / battlepasses). I don’t consider WoW being based on a paid system even considered it requires a sub. The sub allows you to access the whole game, not only an exclusive fraction of the rewards.
I think Blizzard designs WoW around sunken costs, fear of missing out, accumulated rewards, exclusivity, prestige, collection, and so on, exactly because it makes people more likely to stay subscribed to the game, because they have so much more than the immediate enjoyment invested in it. Or so they feel.
That also holds true for PvP.
And that’s good business for Blizzard.
Ah yes being better than 70-90% of people is a bit too easy, lets reward top 1% with even more rewards. Especially considering problem is declining player base and not 1% of addicted people who play for past 5-15 years who probably don’t even care about transmog or have it.
Because companies earn money by making battlepasses which intentionally disrespect your time and offer easy way to finish them for $. What game ever became popular thanks to battlepass? Normally popularity comes first and THEN on top of succsess greedy developers add battlepasses and other types of monetization to parasite on the success. Am I taking crazy pills? People really defend and want fomo, rather than be rewarded for time and efforts spent and freedom to choose when to play??? You think people love battlepass?? A year ago you would advocate NFT in wow because “why are so many games switching to NFT”? Give me a break.
I agree with Hydrargyrum. You spend real time and efforts, health in some way, expirience real emotions and interact with real people. Its an outdated view on values if you think digital achievments are universally less important than climbing a mountain. It’s up to people to decide what makes them happy, dont project your values on everyone else.
My first Ragnaros kill is an experience and an accomplishment I will always value and hold dear.
But I think that game experience and achievement is designed quite differently - and better - than earning an arbitrary number of points on a ladder against an undisclosed number of people before an unknown period of time has passed.
I am not dismissing the value of video games and the great experiences they can provide. I am just critical of some of the video game design that seems made for entirely wrong reasons, in my opinion.
I don’t think so, considering 1.8k wasn’t always the requirement to get all elite pieces for certain sets.
On the other hand various factors would make 1800 very differen from season to season. Atm 1800 is like AWC and from my expirience BfA S4 was handing out 1800 for free - seen a tone of people who cant get 1600 with 1800 s4. And class metters too. So don’t think it should be a factor, because it rather a question of “should it be availible at all” rather than debating on past rating requirements.
well with the introduction of solo shuffle 1.8k and even 2.1k is not that hard to achiev for a dps its harder for a healer sure but 2.1k in solo shuffle isnt the same as 2v2 or 3v3 making the reward less valuable since everyone has the elite set now at 1.8k cr from solo shuffle
elite sets and mounts stay locked,want to get them ,get them on the season they are up like others did.

I would love this SO much! There are so many amazing looking sets out there beyond my reach. I tried to get to 1800 this season Solo Shuffle and 2vs2. Spend whole evenings with my brother but the end result is that I suck too much in this arena (pun intended). Got to 1300…
Maybe they should make it available after the current expension. That is most of the time also the moment you can farm Mythic sets for transmogs. So you can have your prestige for a whole expansion and then it comes more widely available. You can stil have it cost quite a lot of honor points or medals so you still have to work for it.

It’s up to the player to care about what they wish to care about, for example Jito brought up a proven example of what makes people more susceptible to escapist entertainments such as video games and RPGs in particular.
But for you to question that while doing the same, maybe just not as much, is a bit hypocritical, don’t you think?
In the end, a pixel is just a pixel. Why do you care about any achievement at all in this game? Why do you care about any set at all? Why do you care about pixels? If you wanna walk down that route, then that’s where you’ll end up.
