Skinning bugged? Does not grant skill points

So I was just watching my wife playing and she was very upset about skinning. I had it too back then and remember it was the easiest profession to skill and I always reached the max skill level very quickly. But my wife is lvl 44 now and still cannot reach level 225. She is stuck at 218 now and even skinning mobs around her level (around 42) rarely grants any skill point even if the skinning is showed as “orange”. I remember when I was leveling the yellow usually granted point and orange was guaranteed point. But not in this case. She usually has like 2-3 failures before finally succeeding while getting no skill increase. Even skinning lower level mobs shown as green to her have orange skinning difficulty. It does not make any sense… 218 skill is basically 43 lvl so skinning 41-42 lvl mobs should not be orange, should it? Anyone else had the same problem?

I don’t recognise it all, how odd! I have had no issue leveling it, maxed it out quickly and only had failures at a very low skill level, just like I remembered from vanilla. No explanation for it I’m afraid, hope she can get some clarity as to why this is happening

No, it’s normal. Due to the sheer amount of dead mobs in strangle, feralas or badlands, the chance of getting a skillpoint from green or yellow mobs is very low. My hunter is 40, has skinning at 240 or so and even after a complete coyote annihilation in the badlands (all mobs 36-42, so all green to yellow) i got 2-4 skillpoints at best.
Skinning is the easiest of the professions to skill, so they had to tune down the chance. The skillpoints will come, don’t be afraid

So you say that the chance to get the profession skillpoint is related to the mob level (if it is green/yellow/orange) and not to the actual difficulty to skin that mob (green/yellow/orange). It does not make much sense to me to be honest as if that is the case, the color differentiation on the skinning seems to be irrelevant and misleading. Not sure if this works as intended, but will ask her to try to skin some orange mobs (if she can skin them). Thanks for advice!

Wel it is for other profs, but I noticed that when skinning mobs when they ere orange would just as often not give skill points.

These both things you talk about are the same, the difficulty is directly related to the mob level.
The colour of the difficulty is made by the difference of your current skinning skill and the level of the mob. Take the mob level and multiply it by 5, this will get you get the needed skinning skill to skin the mob. And the further your skill is above the needed skill, the lower is the chance to get a skillpoint (colour indicator goes from orange to yellow to green to grey). The system is easy and understandable.
And because skinning is the gathering profession with the least amount of “luck” finding nodes (you can produce them via mass murder) and the most actual gatherings, the chance of getting a skillpoint is lower than with herbalism and mining (where you get a skill point on an orange gathering all the time).

Edit: Having gathering fails on any colours below orange is not possible. Only orange gathering tries are able to produce a failed attempt. So if your wife does have those failed attempts on as you say “lower level” mobs with green indicator, she has encountered a bug no one ever heard of. I personally would say there is a lot of exaggeration in that report. Have you seen it with your own eyes?
