Smite priest is viable as dps/support a PSA

Hey, so i’ve played as a smite priest since dire maul patch. I was mainly healer tho and could dps on farm content. Funny enough i got my best ony log as smite dps (97, 100 for ilvl since all Shadowpriests got so much gear quick or something) even tho its a long fight and mana issues were so bad before we got shadowfiend. i had to use mana pot + rune on cd and got innervate(s?) lol.

I found that in classic smite was useful because of just that you could do your main raid as heal then switch gearset and youd be DPS for farm content where as many healers arent needed and if s**t hits the fan u can always heal in dps gear. Now in tbc the spec is even better, mana issues arent that bad anymore and the spec i choose give the raid imp spirit and still works kinda as a disc healer .33/28/0.

I really havent got a good dps set yet and still doing 800-1.1k dps ST, its really fun going dungeons as healer to switch gear for an easy boss, keep renew on ppl and do nice dmg ppl dont understand whats happening haha. I’m really looking forward to getting decent dps gear and dpsing in raids again.

Anyways what im trying to say is if you wanna try something different and dont mind healing getting a little bit more challenging with the spec to totally try out smite priest :), and dont get discuraged by rejection from groups cus they dont know smite priest do great, instead show it for the groups u get accepted to how awesome it really is! eventually the server will know and the discrimination end ^^

There is a very nice thread on smiters in the German forum, unfortunately in German. But you are not alone!

Got any maths on how the spirit buff improves 25 man mana regen vs. the party mana regen benefits of a shadow priest?

Spirit buff also gives 10% of your spirit as spell damage, dont forget that.

i better level my priest as smite

I don’t think thats true for the whole raid.

Tooltip says: “…also increses target’s spell damage and healing by amount…”.
In case of “me only” effect the wording is usually “increses caster’s…”

It does increase SP for whole raid. It is kinda a must for spell dps. There should be at least one dedicated priest for spirit buff. When I was priesting, I was playing 31/30 - for spirit buff and power infusion for our arcane mages

The synergy of smite priests with shockadin is pretty cool. It’s just that both specs are so rare we hardly ever see them in combination. Love to see it tho.

Does snite priest get PI?

I was not playing dps, it is tank/healer + support role.
In all my guilds PI was always for mages  )

It’s about as viable as playing MM hunter in raids. Does it work? Yes.

But you won’t find them in cutting edge guilds since they won’t bring a Smite priest over a Shadow one.

Finally, someone else who also tried this spec!
I went with it because healers are in a good demand at least on my server, but I don’t want to blow 50g for respecs all the time. So I took the Max Dmg Holy tree, grabbed the Imp. Renew points, and dumped them into Holy Nova and 2/5 Spirit tap.
It’s quite fun to say the least, sure some mobs take time to kill (my Smite hits 1.1k, SWP about 2k over 18 sec, SWD and Holy Fire about 1k upfront), but the fact of dpsing with holy is amazing. This is with 550 +damage. This way I don’t really need dualspec, but indeed could use some caster gear maybe :joy:

Anything can work right? We have a feral dps in bear form who is otherwise worried he dies too fast.

On a side note it never hurts to toss out some smites during raids or party when dmg intake is low and you see no need to reserve mana for anything- I even played with the smite spec as advertised on wowhead.
