Sockets of Domination not relevent in 9.2

Well that lasted long didnt it. Considering what a nightmare it has been to get the relevent pieces for your gear, this has to be one of the most pointless ideas so far?
What do you all think?

This was more than expected the moment they were announced. This should come to absolutely nobodies surprise.

Didn’t bother to get any and geared only through m+ so I personally don’t care.

The analysis below is if you have shards and will feel the change, if not it doesn’t concern you at all, feel free to ignore and skip it.

Yes, and some may liken the system to tier sets, but it’s not like that is it?

It’s a more in-depth system than simply getting tier set pieces to drop and gaining the bonus.
You had the following:

  • gather the pieces with domination slots
  • get the shards to drop from different bosses
  • kill multiple bosses for weeks to gather the currency
  • it also had issues at start with players “accidentally” destroying the shards (that they upgraded before so they basically wasted days/weeks of killing bosses lol)… i had a case in my guild and the player wasn’t happy about it
  • now they’re basically indestructible so you have to use some tricks to get rid of them - disenchant the gear or place the item in the void storage to get rid of it
  • balancing that came a few weeks after? i think, after they went live, so it was a little unfair to those that weren’t lucky enough to benefit from the full force of the 3 set piece due to rng of procuring the gear, the gems and then upgrading the gems as well.
  • disabling it in the new patch will suddenly cause a big loss of power going from one patches content to another - this type of game should always avoid having the characters feeling weaker going from an intra-expansion patch to another.
  • basically a lot of development time was wasted on this system unlike some cut and dry tier bonuses

So yes, it is a waste when a system that has this much development time granted goes away within a patch.

Don’t take my analysis the wrong way, i’m just calling a snake venomous, i didn’t create it, but i’m not really sad for it to go away.
Like i said above, the bad part(besides the amount of dev time going down the drain so soon) is the feeling of dropping power going from a tier to another.

Previously you had the 4 set, which was broken first by a 2 set going in the next tier and then finally the 4 set breaks the previous 2set. As such the power is replaced gradually and (if the balancing is done right) you end up going from, as an example 8900 dps to OVER 9000! dps)

Now what we’ll get is this:

  • sim yourself with your gems and bonus active
  • sim yourself after taking away your dps gems off
  • notice the difference? That’s power that drops right away as you step foot in the new patch.
I’ve just simmed myself (currently Necro so if i was Kyrian the difference would be most likely bigger) and i have:
https://www.raidbots.com/simbot/report/8FNeZHJLnFwRSJjYNixANX - 10269 DPS with the sockets and set bonus
https://www.raidbots.com/simbot/report/wBPBjXdgsFJFHo2gLick8x - 8833 DPS with the sockets out and obviously no unholy set bonus.

The difference in dps is 1436 less dps from the get-go, or about 14% less from the current simmed maximum.

Take that from what you will, but overall it’s bad design to drop a characters power like that going from one intra-expansion patch to another.

Not really surprising and not sad to see it go either.

Very good answer. Thankyou.

Possibly the worst in-game system ever made by Blizzard. Almost killed the entire expansion - Should have been removed after a few days on the 9.1 PTR where everyone with a brain called it out for its stupidity.

All they had to do was make the base shards available to all (maybe via the 9.1 quest chain - account wide unlocked) and then provide multiple paths to collect embers. Would have been better received all round.

wonderful since i did not come back that long ago i know i wont have to bother with them

I just find it hard to understand why Blizzard would make something so complicated to aquire with such a short life span to be honest.

The tier is going to be current for at least 6months in total since its release. That time period is more than long enough for this system. It should not have been implemented in the first place regardless however since its a mess all the way from acquisition to balance of the tier.

considering how insanely hard it is to get a gear drop from raiding, get the right pieces for the sockets, I have to dissagree with you regarding 6 months being long enough.

probably because people hated it. Or because they will implement a different kind of grind in the new zones to timegate things some more

I think the argument that it shouldnt be in the game in the first place is more important. I do know what you mean. I was only able to get my hands on 2 items with a socket. And i am so very done with this raid. It took 2.5 months progressing on already only Sylv heroic. I never want to get into that place again.

This systems is showing to which extent are borrowed powers bad and a waste of time and HR for things players actually hate. Particularly, shards should not have been implemented in the first place, since most of feedbacks pointed out why shards suck.

Even if bonus sets were disabled outside of korthia/the maw/Sod, the gems were still active in M+ and pvp, so non raider still had to go raiding, which again is bad design. Unless they allowed M+ and pvp gear to hold domination sockets and drop shards, which was not the case.

Tldr : happy to witness that system being gone in the abyss of wow’s useless unfun boring systems trash can.

Thank god for that change.

I agree, never should of been in the game in the first place. As regards raiding, Yeah I hate the current tier. Gave up a while back on it.

because they are idiots and they suck

I’m not at all surprised, and I’m glad I anticipated this and picked a few 252 items from the vault even though I don’t need them currently because I’m wearing HC dom socket pieces. Going into the new patch with the best possible gear will make acquiring new gear marginally easier.

It’s a progression system. For people whose goals are to push the hardest content, progression is the entire point of playing WoW. Acquiring optimal gear for the content we want to do, and using that gear to do that content at higher levels, is simply what we do in the game. Optimally, we shouldn’t reach our peak until the next patch is about to launch, which means acquiring the last piece of best gear in the last couple of weeks before patch day. In that context, making systems that take time to optimise only available for one patch makes sense.

(There is an argument that the best gear for a certain type of content should be obtainable by doing that content, and I see it’s been brought up yet again in this discussion. I agree, and I’m pleased to see Blizz have listened to players on that and tier sets will be obtainable through all forms of content.)
