So I’m a new player to Classic looking for the best experience with a good populated server. Which one should be my first try? Classic Era or SoM?

Not sure tbh SoM is fun but feels pointless as its yearly cycled so all your work is gone after a year.
But it go’s to the classic era servers… witch are dead.
Id prolly say TBC Classic as that will be most likely to progress and your character wont be a wasted time investment every year. Depends how much you really want to play classic… If you have never experienced it I would say go for it but after your first season there’s not much reason to come back.

All Classic Era realms are connected by type 1 PvE and 2 PvP and the population is still low, especially on RP realms. I would say play SoM then at the end of the year then move your character to Era. No news as to whether you can pay to move to TBC Classic from there.
If you want a full realm your only way is to play TBC Classic, but since most people are at 60+ the start zones would be almost empty. Try making a character to take a look before levelling it.
Also take into account the realm, some may be full but are dominated by one faction and for PvP that means you may be ganked by 70s with nothing better to do.

So I can just move my character at the end of the year to Classic Era before the season ends? If so, then I can just move my characters from Classic Era to SoM and vice versa right? I apologize for my confusion.
It’s SoM to Era only, even then only when SoM ends.

I already did a few hours ago! Love the community there : D
SoM is the only playable version right now as it’s the least plagued by bots and has no pay to win features such as character boosts.
