Southshore and Tarrens mill guards are off

Hello there,

Quick observation. I have many memories of a specific horde quest where you need to sneak into Southshore graveyard to plant a rode into Hecular’s tomb (or something like that). It has been a long time since vanilla however and I perfectly remember that as a low lvl character it was quite feasible to easily sneak into Southshore following the river to complete this quest as there was almost next to no guard along the river. Now on classic there’s guards everywhere patrolling the river side which makes it pretty impossible to sneak in to complete this quest. Or am I missing something? I have no memories at all of these guards along the river side either from vanilla or from private servers.

No you’re right.
I have been observing them for 10min straight without spotting a single gap to deliver safely.
As a warrior I got my a s s handed to me after completing.
Definately something wrong with their patrol routes, timing or there’s too many guards in general.

With friend we managed to complete the quest - once he agro the guard, i looted, he died and vice versa. Guards way overpowered for that location

I have a vague memory of some patch in vanilla upgrading the defence of both towns. I remember South shore being a complete joke that you could walk right into town at lvl 30ish and murder lowbies since there was so few guards. Since the data is from 1.12.1 that might be why there’s these guards along the river side

My own memory is of struggling with that quest because of the guards… I remember dying a few times before planting the rod and being summarily killed. But then again, I can’t say with any certainty that I did the quest before the BC pre-patch hit. My memory isn’t as good as some others on this forum, alas.

I’m pretty sure both of our memories are right and we’re probably remembering doing it on 2 different patch versions. However comments from 2006-2007 on vanilladb seem to point toward that the river side was not that guarded at all.

Honestly? Seems likely.

I remember dying there a lot…

I don’t know how to link but here’s some comments from 2006-2007. The guards are currently lvl 55 in Tarren mill. I remember them being 45 at some point. Also can someone confirm the lvl of guards in Astranaar (Aschenvale). They were definately lvl 40 in Vanilla that’s for sure because I spent so much time ganking there, would be a good reference point.

The guards were nerfed back to level 45 and the whole east side of South Shore is empty of guards.

I used your method and was not touched by the guards. The remains of Helcular came out and the guards didn’t even attack him. I just hope some unsuspecting ally came by and was killed by him after I left. lol…

His grave is at 52,53. If you want to avoid conflict, come in on the river, his grave is the closest one to the river in the graveyard.

I would love to see a video of Helcular wrecking havoc on Southsore

Haven’t checked yet myself. But are the guards of places like XR buffed in lvl or not? They used to be lvl 40. Atleast up until somewhere in TBC.
Remember raiding xr one time with an alt during tbc. The guards were lvl 40 and a raid member summoned the image of vargoth (Tbc quest item)

I remember guards being lvl 40/45 aswell, not 55. 55 Guards were reserved for Capital cities. If someone can check the lvl of guards in Astranaar that would settle it because I know that they were lvl 40 exactly.

Hadn’t checked it myself for XR yet. Just wondering with all these different things people remember.

Got in without any trouble as a warrior (not even aware of the guards lol) but got rekt the moment i turned to leave away. They also have aggro range like half a zone. When i got back to corpse and ressed at a safe distance as i thought, the bloody guard aggroed the same instance and raped me 2nd time

The new project lead wanted to kill-off spontaneous world-PvP ASAP. They wanted everyone raiding or in BGs, completely missing the point of the world that Mark Kern oversaw being created. That meant making both TM and SS virtually impenetrable.

Also, Hecular is de-activated or bugged. I finished the quest yesterday, corpse running repeatedly closer to his gravestone, so even if you can make it with a mad-rush with a whole group, Hecular won’t be there to save you and melt away the guards.

i just strolled to the grave in one go delivered the quest and died, it is still more easily accessible from the river side, the guards do move a little bit, and i just went in when the gap between guards was biggest. Can confirm that i didn´t see Hecular do any wrecking.
