While I’m aware there’s a PTR Spoiler thread already, I figured now that The War Within is live, it might be worth having a seperate thread to talk about peoples’ experiences with the new content.
Out of respect, please make sure all major spoilers are obfuscated! You can use the ‘Blur Spoiler’ button under the cogwheel icon in the post editor.
I saw the start with Khadgar… and must say this is the same old crap. He might not be dead but I don’t like it. Blizzards writing is not what it was.
Let’s kill Varian Wrynn a character that’s been in game and we see him grow up and get screen time, let’s kill him with a a crappy death.
Oh you know Tyrion Fordring? The guy who is from warcrafts start, who leads an army to destroy an Antagonist, an antagonist, a villain who is been build up since w3 and becomes a Raid boss so after all that let’s kill the protagonist via a random demon(died from wounds).
And now same again build up a protagonist going through a couple expansion and let’s again for shock effect in start of Xpack kill of(well this time make it look like we killed him off) and for what ? for what ?
So that a new shat out antagonist is cool? xal’atath? No don’t feel like these antagonists are build up they are more forced, same with Lilith…from Diablo 4, heres a chick, misunderstood, bad using plot armor (writer say) shes now the most powerful baddie ever.
I know there is lore and you can take any protagonist from it or antagonist. But the effect in video game is still build up via screen time or quests. If there are little screen or quests. The characters seem like randoms…
The cut scene was slight legion vibe. Wasn’t good then isn’t good now, nothing as learned.

“A random elf/troll woodoo dancing” Not the worst part
A black new random character that feels forced by diversity, not the worst part
A wow game cinematic that part of it looks like diablo… (it’s wow stay with wow), not the worst part.
Worst part… This starts to look like any other mobile game…
Idk. The most powerful mage on Azeroth spends all of his mana on some crappy beam spell I guess??? And then struggles to make a portal. Where are the barriers, the blinks, the poly?
I absolutely hate when a character of vast power goes out like a chump in this way.
An just not be a downer there are good things as well. Really like the princess screen time, since she was in BRD and it brings memories and ties actual game play to the cinematic world.
I think Khadgar’s death was fitting with his character? Could it have been more explosive, more fancy, more magical shenanigans like some Gods of Magic battle between himself and Xal’atath? Yea, sure it could, bit that wasn’t the point and as far as deaths go, I think Khadgar would be the one person to sacrifice himself to save a friend or loved one at the cost of his own life.
Not every death needs to be grand and glorious, if it fit his character, it suffices for me.
I haven’t had the time to play yet, but I am assuming Khadgar played a big role in the defense of Dalaran itself, probably spending alot of his mana in his beloved city’s defense as the Archmage of the Kiron Tor.
The main beef with Khadgar’s death is that it was just Rhonin’s again.
Big magic bomb going to blow up a city. Mage leader of the Kirin Tor uses the last bit of his power to teleport blonde lady away before it can explode, and he dies in the process.
Yeah not everyone needs a unique death but they are hitting a lot of same notes to be hit, and there’s not exactly any direct thematic connections between the two to make a parallel worth anything.
He sort of doesn’t though, which is the reason why it makes his death so underwhelming. He sends you to do 1-2 quests in Dalaran itself prior its teleportation, then its just running around with Alleria, as she is desperately trying to find Khadgar.
I understand the point of doing it the way it was done is to showcase Xal’s powers, that she is a strong and all-mighty entity etc etc, but there really are other ways of doing it. It felt rushed, it didn’t feel fulfilling, and gave a notion that Khadgar was just used as a filler character.
And my god, they still make the emphasis on the slow talking in these cinematics, it’s like characters are hit with the stupid juice, when they open their mouths.
So you can’t kill any character off, or move the plot, because there will always be a part of the player base displeased by what you do.
Nice advice for Blizzard!
I know its probably not true, but I like to imagine that Khadgar just offscreen saves people and wrecks (powerful) enemies and we just arrive at the tail end of it all, so he’s lost loadsa mana already.
Man the alzheimers dwarf quest has been a highlight of this expansion so far. Don’t know when was the last time the game managed to pull my heartstrings.
Another good one from the same zone was the jewelcrafter lady from dalaran who wanted all the knowledge about the gems and was willing to do anything to get it- So the elemental gave her everything she wanted and turned her into stone, so she could contemplate for all of eternity about gems.
My only real “complaint” so far is the amount of cinematics during the intro, otherwise it’s just your usual leveling experience in my opinion.
Delves feel a little underwhelming, then again I only did tier 2 for now, but the general vibe of them isn’t this “insane open world adventure” that I thought they’d be and not really rewarding at all, but perhaps that changes with the course of progression.
So I just played the Fall of Dalaran scenario. And to me, the way Dadgar talks when we meet up with him again, he clearly has been fighting, alot!
Why else would he say Dalaran is lost to them for now? Because he took a stroll in a park and had a messenger bird whisper it to him?
Its obvious he didn’t just sit and lean back in the Violet Citadel with a nice glass of Dalaran Red. or spend time exploring Xal’atath’s dungeon…
Ye, Blizzard sucks at show-don’t-tell, but some of you guys made it appear that literally nothing pointed at Khadgar playing any role in the Fall of Dalaran until the very end, which clearly is wrong…
You might interpret it differently. but atleast its an (off-screen) explanation to why he was a one-pump chump with Xal’atath, instead of this Wizardry-God we all think he is…
Also whats with everyone calling Khadgar | Guardian" when he explicitely rejected the role and the gifts it entails?
Also Alleria looks kinda… Derpy? I don’t know how to say it, but something is “off but “cute”” with her face, due to lack of a better word(in my english voculabatory?
Eh, I can argue that, but I guess it’s simply up for interpretation and personal preference.
All in all, just finished the campaign and it quite underwhelms me that the most entertaining part of the story (or lore) are the nerubians, when I initially thought that they’d be the most boring and simply inserted into the story as a generic villian faction. As per usual, in-game rendered cinematics are getting much better at… pretty much everything, from not looking too scuffed to lip-sinking, and the music in zones is also great.
Alleria being a discount version of Illidan has to be the biggest letdown for me. Gave her the new looks, but forgot to put a personality in there
