It’s super depressing, there’s no hope for life, enjoyment, any fun - I reckon even potential relationships are a no-no. A corpse bride moment? Don’t know. I read that they do have emotions on a rare occasion, but not sure
Just wandering through the starting zone, I’m constantly asking myself, should I stop here and pick another class? I’m not even talking about the gameplay, but the theme, the complete lack of hope.
Knowing a bit of the lore after Wotlk, how does a death knight become a champion, leader and whatnot in all of the following lore?
What’s there to enjoy?
And the biggest gripe of all, they don’t enjoy any alcohol
Edit. Since there are lot of replies that haven’t read the other comments - I completed the starting zone and after realizing the DK is not only evil acting on behalf of Arthas, but tries to escape his “chains” and seek for vengeance, I find the class lore more fitting now.
Having done the original DK starting zone 3 times: 1 BE, 1 Tauren, 1 Classic BE (for the mount), with Arthas as the leader, it was basically like playing a villain.
Murdering civilians ? Yup.
Turning miners in to ghouls ? Yup.
Killing hundreds of Scarlet Soldiers ? Yup.
Killing an acquaintance of yours from Argent Dawn and being congratulated by your superior for officially becoming a monster ? Yup.
Losing a battle against the Argent Crusade forces commanded by Tirion and than seeing Arthas leave everyone behind ? Yup.
I think my characters hit every bottom barrel there was in terms of morality.
I think you should pick another class.
I play all classes, except for the one introduced in this expansion. I have no more time, for more characters tbh.
That’s the only reason, why I play my 2 DKs.
Because every class you play is called that during WoD campaign.
Because every class is a Order Hall leader during Legion.
Arthas, Darion Mograine, Bolvar and Death Knights lore.
Some people like it, some don’t.
Personally, it’s not for me.
Ironically they fit like a glove in BFA narrative.
They are fit to be treated as trash by Nathanos Blightcaller.
They are fit to serve the Banshee Queen.
They are fit to kill Alliance NPCs and raise them from the dead.
They are fit to kill civilians as this isn’t their first time doing it.
They are also fit to not be relied as mindless Zombies and decide to join Saurfang. After all they already betrayed their master once (Arthas).
The only reason I disqualified both of my DKs to become my dark plate character, in favour of my Forsaken Warrior was because DKs has less weapon choices, which limits their habilities to unlock transmogs like shields.
Edit: forgot to add; torturing Scarlet captives till death ? Yup.
I’ve always enjoyed characters in movies and tv shows where they’re initially evil, but at times, show signs of good in them. I think this expansion is the first game that I’ve played that actually makes you feel evil, at least in the beginning, I haven’t continued the lore much yet. Don’t know if there will be signs of “good” coming
I realized that now as I just completed the starting zone. What an introduction to a class though. I’m a fairly new player, so all I’ve ever know is I’m the hero of this world. Starting out as, not only an enemy, but having to act on that made me really want to avenge Arthas.
Now that I have completed the starting zone though, how do I continue the story? Do I go to Chromie or do I just go to Northend? And will the story play out in correct order if I just start picking quests? Or how do I know which quests to follow
If you don’t enjoy it, yes
No need to “torture” yourself, game is suposed to be fun an relaxing, and while some enjoy the Spawn level of brooding anti-hero type, not everyone is happy to be an emotionless corpse of a former hero, who was dragged back from the grave and made to be a supersoldier (well, an expendable soldier to attack Lights hope and on its first mayor mission failed miserably) , a cursed killing machine, who ave to kill or inflict pain or goes mad, who escaped the icy grip of the Lich King’s mind and decided as long as it unlives, it will help its former faction and Azeroth
The Lich King selected the “worthy” to be his undead elite, so the Death Knight in question already proved its worth to the given faction, and was not just corpse on the road the Scourge picked up, while you progress in your intro, there is a little talk who actually you were with a former, sill living friend… and had to murder him (this is the source we actually knew the Worgen Death Knights were not necesarily Gilenan, but members of the Childen of Arugal, and a gift to the Lic King when Arugal joined) to save your skin.
A Damned that wants to do good and don’t have the morality to be bothered by trivilal things like the life of others
The Punisher, Spawn, Blade, maybe the Ghost Rider… some likes to be the victim who turned its misery in to weapon , the “bad guy” who is pragmatic or just wants to be edgie
If you ever played or know Vampire: The Masquarade you know what I’m talking about
So no, the Death Knight is not for everyone and it is totally okay if its not your cup of tea
It is just a process of the Alliance being deleted.
It is normal, no need to worry much about it.
As to the OP: Yes, the DK storyline started out pretty dark, as the class was one of the first hero classes to be added. You are playing a fallen hero turned into a walking weapon.
This theme was very popular back then, and not just with death knight (Blood elves abducting a Naruu and using it as an energy source to be able to use the light is another good example of this).
The overall theme of the game changed a lot now. If you do not like this approach then feel free to look into other classes, maybe you will find something else more akin to your liking.
The way I see it, Death knights really didn’t have a say if they were raised as death knights, but during the starting zone quests they become aware who they were before they got killed.
They can’t undo being death knights, so they will use their new powers for the greater good, but they can’t change their new nature so there is a bit darkness involved
You should finish the starting zone and if you are up to it, complete the Legion DK campaign.
Personally I love DK lore and I have made countless DK’s over the years (but only one is still around). Sometimes it’s good to know the darker side of the story too
