Hello there.
I was wondering what is the state of Tanks currently? I heard many things.
Mostly how easy paladins have it right now. (Which might be far fetched. Unless there was rework I remember pallys being very cool down dependant, especially outside of consecration or however it is spelled).
I do not want to really watch tier list about power. More about how they feel. For context I am solo player who tanked in previous expansions for the vault only. So I know. All of the tanks are viable at my level of play. Just repeating that I am curious about how they feel instead of how OP they are.
They are currently the meta tank. They do a lot of damage.
However, if you don’t know what you are doing it’s easy to flop over.

Especially if you’re a solo player and want to get into groups quickly, you almost have to play Paladin if you want to play the game.
If you absolutely don’t want to play Paladin, I’d recommend playing Protection Warrior. The rest doesn’t really matter unless you’re an OTP on those classes.

Pallies are absolutely dependent on good play to feel strong.
Play them well and they feel great, play them badly and you’re better off with a more forgiving tank like a druid or a warrior.
For a prot pally you need 95%+ sotr uptime, you need to be in your consecration, you need to rotate AD / Eye of tyr / Guardian / sacred weapons and even bubble (it comes up quickly) in periods of high damage. It’s a lot of buttons.
You can’t completely afk on prot warr / guardian but they are more forgiving of gaps in mitigation due to higher passive mitigation for warrs / HP for druids.
Also, and this is a statement of the obvious, you need to at least engage your brain a bit. I’ve been healing recently and the number of pallys that will open by throwing their shield at a melee mob instead of a caster is astounding. You need to take advantage of its strengths or its going to feel a bit rubbish.

Yeah. That is what I am saying as well. Paladin always to me was very knowledge dependant tank . Needing uptime. Standing in your thing, rotating CDs and interrupting on top of all this.
And since I have not tanked since m+ revamp last patch, I am hesitant to jump on pally for this. At least until I get the hang of tanking again. That is why I am asking how other tanks are holding up.
Ppalys dont have it easy. Not easier than any other tank.
With low gear they are really prone to 1-shots. And you gotta be carefull with your CD management (as you clearly stated).
This is true. What is also true is that tanking in general is tough this season. Whichever tank you choose to play.

From someone who has read up on prot pala this weekend as a main healer, you flop over half your health instant in a +2 on 593 ilvl, and getting aggro back seems also quite difficult.
First dungeon on prot paladin; i am totally crap
(s1 tww) Protection Paladin Necrotic wake +2
It probably feels better on brewmaster since you do not need to press 4 buttons on/before pull. Just press 1 defensive and let your stagger doing the job.
And just to add a question without making new thread. Which tank would you recommend? I was always biased towards Monk and DH with DK on their heels.
I highly recommend prot warrior
but I might be biased
Prot warrior or bear if you’re starting out
Bear for easy PWarr for more advanced tanking.
Bear is squishy asf outside Ursoc w/o specuqlized stats. PW is alot more tanky all around, but uas just 1 emergency heal. Usually can take lots of punishment even as a last man standing.
We literally put the tank in tank
Depends on what you really want:
- Paladins are ok survivability wise, have some pretty good cds. Main highlight is really big burst every 1 min at pull, and the ability to interrupt 2-3 abilities by yourself.
- Warrior are the tankiest of the bunch, while also being the easiest to play. You can legit go in pulls and barely take any damage, although you still need some healing.
- DKs in anything but the very high end are pretty much immortal regardless of your group. You can do some pretty nice things with grips (interrupt spells and such) but main selling point is that you can actually do the dungeons by yourself, the group is there just to save you time (once I soloed Ara Kara last boss form 50% in a 10).
I have no experience from the other tanks this expansion, but from the above 3 my favorite by far is the DK.
All the tanks feel awful atm including prot paladin. PP is simply the best of the worst. Mainly cause it brings more interrupts and decent damage.
But it’s just as prone to dying if not played perfectly.
Warrior is likely the tankier of the tanks, again when played perfectly.
I don’t recommend tanking to anyone atm. It’s super stressful and unrewarding as it stands. I am looking forward to the next ptr with changes.

I have played Blood DK, Prot warrior and a bit of Prot Paladin, thus far for me the tank that feels the best to play is Warrior.
I currently don’t push and just go for weekly keys; I have to say that Prot Warrior is the tank that feels the most fun to play in dungeons out of the three.
a person does not know how to play a bear, but confidently declares the simplicity of the spec. classic )
C’mon man. Stop patting yourself at the back. Guardian (or any class for the matter) is not Rocket Science. Specifically, anyone can play Guardian, since its the easiest tank to pick and with the least of nuances.
I didn’t say that )
a common misconception ) The bear has a low entry threshold, that’s all that can be said for sure. It is difficult to say which tank is the simplest at a high level of the game.
NGL, I find BrM the easiest tank to play nowadays while I find bear “hard” and utterly boring. The degenerate IF spam alone killed the spec for me in DF, however, Elune’s Chosen put the final nail in the coffin for me. DotC was just a major letdown altogether but my most hyped for HS going into TWW.
Old bear main here.
