Tanking as a Pally in classic-advice

Ok so after 7/8 years a s a warrior (playing from launch day), I have come back and this time I want to go pally. Now I realize they are not the “go to” class for tanking dungeons, but I heard they can be completely viable for low level dungeons as you level (DM, SM etc etc). So for the more knowledgeable here, how does a pally tank with out taunt, charge and any threat building abilities? What is the spell/skill rotation in a dungeon?

They have threat generation. Righteous fury is activated and it’s what increases your threat. They are good at AoE tanking, however they aren’t used in raiding mainly because they lack taunt and that was the main issue. You cannot switch with the other tank and if you lose aggro it can get hard to get it back.
Edit:
I cannot really remember what the “rotation” was per say, however I’m sure you just spam consecration, holy shield mainly for threat generation. In general classes in vanilla didn’t have a rotation. As a mage for example you mostly spammed the frost/fire/pyro bolts.
My advice is - if you want to play tank and have a good experience, go for warrior, prot paladin is okay if you want to do dungeons only and gear quickly, but it’ll get you only to a certain point.

Thanks for the detailed answer man much appreciated

I tried to play a prot pally on a classic p server and didnt work too well.
First, you need to be the one who pulls. If someone pulls and mobs are running around its almost impossible to get aggro back.
Most aggro will be generated through consecration, holy shield and judgement. You should also bring plenty of water + mana pots because there is no infight mana regen (as in TBC with spiritual attunement).
Good luck with prot!

So am i right in thinking-post level 60 i am a buff bot in raids?

Yea kinda. I dont think that a pally can be used as a maintank in raids. Biggest issue is the missing taunt. There is no way to get aggro back from raid bosses.

You can play Prot pally on all dungeons. In raids hes not viable as a main tank due to the fact he can’t avoid efficiently crushing blows.
Offtank and in dungeos you can handle it.
With improved fury and Blessing of Salvation you can tank efficiently.
Even a warrior has to hit 3 sunders before ppl start hitting. As a pally i was taking 5 secs then all would start hitting.

Give it a try.
Cheers

I played Prot Paladin on private server (vanilla) and it kinda sucked, keeping threat level up is quite difficult. As said above if someone else pulls, you can struggle. It’s quite demanding

You may enjoy the challenge (I did). But there is a reason why nearly all tanks in vanilla were Warriors.
