Not a race I play but would be nice to see them with some more additions. For a race that’s so widely played I don’t really feel they got enough customisation options compared to others.
One thing that really bugs me is the female tiara hairstyle can’t be changed from gold to silver lol.
Weirdly I’m sure I read somewhere -why- Elves of all types have those long eyebrows, that they’re like a cat’s Vibrissae (Which makes sense, as cats also have massively explodey ‘eyebrows’) and as such actually perform a sensory function, unlike on humans where it is just to keep sweat out of your eyes. Cats with damaged vibrissae, or missing them entirely, do often seem to be more disorientated than other cats who have theirs, and less accurate in their jumping, so maybe that’s it? Who knows ?
Out of interest, why do people want red eyes? Is it only for the Dark Ranger Schtick? As there are a few other problems associated with that, or do they want them for standard Blood Elves also? Curious, as I’ve never wanted them, but then I was always more interested in the Celtic aspect of Elves and suchlike, so genuine question, what is the appeal to it? Is it linked to San’Layn?
Couple of problems I have with Dark Rangers. We’ll leave aside Blizzard butchering their own lore with regards Banshee’s and Spectres, but Dark Rangers are very specific, and kinda class limited. Hunters, maybe Rogue, possibly Monk even, but we never see any Magic using Dark Rangers. Lore wise they should be female only, but as I say, Blizz have already butchered their own bestiary and lore.
Another problem is that Dark Rangers should be able to speak Gutterspeak, or whatever the Forsaken Language is called nowadays. This would either be really awkward that they can’t, or would mean that Blizzard would have to give Blood Elves -3- language slots. Orcish, Thalassian and Gutterspeak, to allow people to properly RP as Dark Rangers. The obvious problem there being, that it would be only fair that the Alliance have a race that also gets a third racial language that allows them to communicate directly with another Alliance race in their own tongue. I mean I can think of -suggestions-? The most obvious given until recently their proximity being that Draenei could speak Darnassian, or possibly that Gnomes (Being smarty pants types) could also speak Dwarven, given that those four species had lived cheek by jowl for some time.
I think San’layn would be a dangerous thing to encourage, certainly on RP realms. I don’t want to see Silvermoon turn into Revendreth 2.0, or some Vampire: The Masquerade city, or heavens forfend…Twilight Shudders.
You know some newbies would overdo it, and get upset when people don’t respect their Vampire overlords, but instead go “Yeah, Farstrider mate, you want to play Vampire games, I can stake you from hundreds of yards away at least…”
I think they’d need to think hard about how they would implement it, unless they literally did just introduce some form of magic that turns the eyes red with nothing else, similar to Arcane/Light/Fel.
Dark Rangers, or at least an undead elf would be cool but they’d be better as an option for the Forsaken imo, given the amount of elves killed then resurrected by Arthas and no doubt finding a home among Sylvanas’ undead. It’d just mean some quest text might need changing in the Forsaken starting area for characters that are elves, not sure, I’ve only levelled up in the really OG one before.
I think there is stuff Blood Elves need before red eyes personally but the more options there are for people to customise, the better.
I was more curious as to why people wanted them? I mean I don’t care that much, but wondered about the appeal of them. I understand about whacky races though, it’s like people who are insisting Void Elves get Paladin so they can play that extremely iconic and well known type of High Elf Paladin… Sighs
Was interesting to see some rationale behind it, as I don’t really have a hawkstrider in that race, is all.
It’s one from the vaults but way back in the day one of the defining characteristics of the High/Blood Elves (at the start of TBC) was that they hated all things undead. It was literally in the race bios when TBC launched.
Undead rangers are cool and all but they are antithetical to all that Quel’Thalas stands for (and got trashed by).
I honestly think that part of the lore got automatically disregarded the moment the Death Knights became accepted members of the community. I might be mistaken, but this appears to be valid for both Blood and Night elves.
I wouldn’t mind having dark rangers as a hero class like death knights and demon hunters but aside from that being another elf only class (hmmm) I also have to wonder how that could make sense at all since they were clearly members of the Hunters class halls in Legion.
On the other hand while the story tells us there is a single Night Warrior, specifically the High Priestess of Elune, every night elf of every class is allowed the black eye customization. If we’d want to stay loyal to the lore, that doesn’t really make much sense… and yet, I believe the addition was generally well accepted as something cool. Possibly just because it was too new to make a fuss about? (Seriously just wondering here)
I may be mistaken of course, but this all makes me think it would be just as harmless to have the red eye color for whatever blood elf class. Whether we may have rightfully hated the Undead in the past for obvious reasons, undead blood elves have been part of our community since Death Knights (who retain with their own race and racials) joined the fight on our side, and now we are even learning about how the Afterlife works. This makes me think society has changed so much since the time the undead people were originally rejected and hated by everyone, that the addition of red eyes would make very little difference.
But I have to concede that I am not that much of a lore nerd. While I enjoy the themes and looks, I can very easily shrug off inconsistencies with the lore for the sake of progression, coolness, game play or whatever else.
I think they were probably a bit confused when they wrote those, because equally right from the start of TBC they were working -with- the Undead, indeed the Forsaken are the only race/Faction that Blood Elves start off as ‘Friendly’ with. Possibly the bio meant to stipulate the Scourge, which would make sense, rather than ‘the Undead’ which suddenly right from the very start as a Blood Elf character you instantly get shown is -not- in fact the case.
Considering the hefty helping Belves got from Forsaken I always imagine they’re pretty good at differentiating between mindless scourge and mindful freethinking forsaken
I mean sure Sylvanas had to twist Lor’themar’s arm here and there but I never assume a lot of people even know about interactions between NPC’s as high up the food chain as racial leaders (or atleast mine don’t)
But otherwise yeah I remember the hatred for everything that came crawling out of the scar and everything that had to do with Arthas.
Personally my elf still keeps a deep hatred for any feral and/or scourge undead and that’s how I like playing it off
To be on topic for blood elf customization just give me the red/black antorus paladin set that was never added thank you
(Don’t even try to tell me that set wasn’t designed for blood elves)
I don’t feel like there’s much missing for Blood Knights other then their official mount and armor being a bit dated, so maybe a new charger would be nice?
I don’t think there’s any canon about BK’s having tattoo’s or anything else that might set them apart other then their armour and tabards. Also out of all the 3 meta belf classes (magister/farstrider/BK) I always felt like BK was the most fleshed out already so giving the other two some things would be fine as well
If I ever did want something for belves in general it’s some of the detentacled void elf hairstyles and an updated starter zone
