The Hidden Addon Ban Blizzard hasnt openly talked about

The Discussion about Combat Addons being officially being banned is already raging on now since it was officially delcared in the Q&A.

Well thats only the Tip of the Iceberg here.

Addon Authors received a PDF explaining the Restrictions put in Place, which in wont go into much Detail here, because it goes to technical.

Long Story Short: Its a Scorched Earth approach.

People are thinking only Addons like DeadlyBossMods, WeakAura and Recount are impacted. But the Restrictions go much much further.

Simple Things Like “Health and Mana” or “Skillbar Button 1” are “blackboxed” and cant be accessed anymore, which means Interface Addons, that only change the Look of your Healthbar and Manabar like Shadowed Unit Frames or Your Skillbar like Bartender cant work because that Knowledge suddenly is “forbidden” similar how CombatLog Knowledge is “forbidden” for the announced Combat Addons.

What does that mean? Well it means that pretty much nothing we are used to will work in Midnight.

We will be forced to use their unattractive outdated basic Interface.

They do gather “Feedback” what has to be unlocked and yes its only Day 2 of Alpha.

But with a Company Size of Blizzard there is no need to go so far and block so much if they still want to “work together with addon authors” and “look forward how Addons improve the game in midnight”. Its all a Farce.

I thought its important to let the wider Public know of this, which is currently mostly knowledge only Addon Authors have.

This info sounds very unreliable without some more information. Can you reference specific parts of the source code in an addon like Shadowed Unit Frames and showcase why it’d break?

Wherever those “information” come from:

This sounds very unlikely. Blizzard would not send out PDFs to addon authors, they would reuquire to make those information available openly so new developers can access those information.

If seen you flaming in the other Threads too so i wont interact with you outside this sole answer. You always personally attack the other Person instead of providing constructive Counter Arguments.

I did not add Bartender for Ragebait but because its the Skillbar Addon I personally use. I never said the Author will go public and say he quits and you cant see any articles about this, because this information was given to the UI Authors TODAY.

So before you walk around and accuse others who have serious concerns about the general functionality of addons of ragebaiting how about you sit down and inform yourself more.

http s://midnight-public-alpha-addon-api-changes-2.tiiny.site/

remove the empty space between http s and check the pdf file for yourself.

The “Secret Values” are basically everything that is blocked. If you want to see more Proof feel free to join the Discord and check the feedback channel. You dont need much technical knowledge to pick up the gists of it how badly restricted things are.

a) im not Lynlia i dont know who that is.

b) its a pdf host called tiiny host, you dork.

Alone the accusation i want to steal other peoples account information, when they can fact check the link quite easily shows you have no intention of actually having a constructive conversation, but are only here to devolve things into drama

You’re wrong about so much it’s kindda funny.

ShadowedUF will have to be rewritten but you can totally still make an addon like that, but instead of reading GetPlayerHealth or reading COMBATLOGEVENTUNFILTERED, you instead have this black box yes, but you can manipulate the box itself.

You can change the texture, you can resize it, you can put it onto other frames and move it around. And that’s what ShadowedUF wants as its result. That’s not how it’s written, but you can totally replicate that addon now.

The only thing I worry about is the auras filter. I think that one might be ruined unfortunately.

You cant read the Information inside the box aka HOW MUCH Health. How is a Ui Addon that actively changes the Look and the Numbers of your Healthbar supposed to work if they cant read how MUCH Health you have?

Also do you have any Proof of your Claim? Do you perhaps wrote a UI Addon yourself? Care to share?

I mean, if you followed anything about the alpha, you would have seen the discussion about what the op is saying in reddit, youtube, discords, and so on.

Already WA developers and many other addon developers just threw in the towel because they are severely limited in what they actually can do with the restrictions.

Also blizzard already stated that the initial feedback seems that they went overboard and they are backtracking a bit since a restriction they inputted caused all kind of addons to stop working (they disabled all addon communication within an instance).

But yeah, from the initial information, all kind of addons are getting killed left and right. The most extreme thing is that even customization addons are being killed because they cannot get the player information in order to display it (if let’s say you wanted to create your own cast bar or rage bar).

Exactly, thank you for wording it in a clearer manner, than i managed so far.

Are healing addons like Vuhdo going away, or is there hope?

I’ll switch to dps / tank full time if that’s the case lol

I wrote Decyka and SquishMe. One of my friends is responsible for Vocal Raid Assistent. (Which is definitely broken now)

I’m not updating them anymore but I know my way around addons.

Now, as to your question - you can move the text around, too. You can have your percentage and min max down wherever you want. I would strongly assume that the text itself is a black box but you can still anchor them and change their font and size.

I do hope that Blizzard will show some formatting. What’s important about the black box approach is that these boxes need to be avle to receive messages that tell them how to display their information.

Man im glad ive been a standard UI user since i started playing.

Vuhdo will break, but it can be written such that it will work again.

Fingers crossed then :crossed_fingers:

It’s not the end of the world but ive been using addons like Vuhdo since Wotlk and feel comfortable with my set up - wouldnt want to re-learn new binds.

Well im no Addon Dev so i cant give a definitive Answer.

From what i know Vuhdo also access the Combatlog in order to see how much healing is done and what healers is currently targeting what player to heal more (so you dont overheal) that might be gone but the interface MAY stay.

however with how things are right now with like only be able to like “dye” things pink and thats it, yes vuhdo is a goner until we get further information down the line.

Ishayo is right that it can be rewritten, however i believe it is important to shine a light on this situation, to generate pressure against blizzard so they do actually work very closely with the respective authors and backpedal faster than their usual snailpace so things can be already widely progressed within the alpha

Same here. I’ve never used a UI-altering addon ever, and I haven’t used a combat-information one since Cataclysm.

Been using their unattractive ui for 20 years… never used a weak aura or anything like it. The only thing I used was dbm because the guild I was in required it.

I no longer raid so I have been combat-addon sober since BFA.

You do you. If you are happy like that thats fine.

I find it ugly and like to have a cleaner one. Each their own.

They won’t be changing it so…

Info taken from the us forums, but the developer of vuhdo, ivaria said that the addon will not be able to function anymore.

From what it seems currently, you can make “skins” for the devault ui, but not make your own bars, icons, frames or anything that use player/combat stats, since those that hidden.

Currently this seems to me the most dangerous thing yet, because blizzard is moving too fast. In the past blizz could push out a bad feature, and addons would “save” it until they made it better. In the new expansion they do not have that advantage, and if they push something that is not good enough for the playerbase, players might not stick around.

Even a simple example. I have the playing enh shaman from tbc, and since the introduction of MSW I have customized my UI to track it as a bar filling up. I doubt that I will have this customization option at the start, and the game will definitely become worse for me with that change.
