The lack of good rewards for average PvP players

The problem

Currently, PvP rewards work as follows:

  • Elite set at 1800, which is about top 15% of the PvP ladder
  • Elite illusion at 2100, around top 3%
  • Elite weapons, tabard, pennant, and possibly a mount AND a permanent title above 2400, top 0,5%.

This means that a shocking 85% of the PvP playerbase is missing out on the main rewards of ranked PvP.
As a result, PvP feel extremely unrewarding for new players, or PvE players who decide to give PvP a try for the first time. It also makes PvP feel tedious because those players will feel that they need to make a lot of efforts and improve massively just so they can reach the first tier of rewards.

First solution

Right now, reaching 2400 rewards up to 5 permanent rewards, as mentioned above: tabard, weapons, pennant, possibly a mount, possibly a title. And yet, barely anyone reaches 2400 rating. It’s an extremely difficult task and only a tiny percentage of the most dedicated PvP players ever reach that rating.

Whilst 2400 rated players deserve a unique reward for sure, they absolutely don’t need 5 of them all for themselves. My proposed solution is therefore to lower the rating requirements for the pennant to 1400 rating, and the weapon appearances to 1600 rating.

Second solution

I believe Ranked PvP could benefit from having a reward track system similar to that of Guild Wars 2: https://www.reddit.com/r/worldofpvp/comments/1cazje2/guild_wars_2_figured_out_pvp_rewards_over_a/
This simple solution is perfect because it means that all players will be able to progress towards something by playing PvP, regardless of their rating and skill level. PvP will never feel like a waste of time for players who are still learning and losing a lot of games, because at least, they’ll be filling up their reward track and working toward a goal.

Conclusion

I have good ideas.

for pvp rewards, they should only add cosmetics, mount, achievements. yes I agree 100%

BUT

pvp should not have gear farming. no one likes it except bad players
a pvp game the ideal would be to have a tournament server with character already max level and all the free gear

To make pvp healthier too, he should add a solo q (for 3s and 2s), and remove the solo shuffle.
A season must last 3 months maximum with new meta (yes because it is not equilibrable)
Delete all addons but put bigdebuf, detail, sarena, omnibar/cd in the interface.

it should be inspired by the ladder of other competitive games (lol, valorant, hearthstone, cs etc) to create a ranking.
Their current mmr and cr system and the worst I’ve seen on any game

I agree with everything you said except the 3 month seasons part.
Right now we have plenty of time to push and improve in time to earn our desired rewards on all the classes that we enjoy. 3 months seasons would just be too short.

Helloo, I’m back for the last season of dragonflight PvP.

I don’t think 1800 is a difficult achievement. All people need to do is spam que for shuffle, I mean it is difficult when the season first starts but after a few months it is no big deal. You already start around 1800 if you have good placement match results.

2100 is a little bit more difficult yes but still possible.

My suggestion has been allowing players to buy old gladiator mounts in exchange of Vicious Saddles. of course not for 1x Vicious Saddle, in exchange of let’s say 10x. It would provide a pathway to endless progress towards some mount rewards.

This same method can be used for a similar rewarding system, create a random new currency to farm through PvP in order to buy let’s say Demonic Tyranny from Legion. I don’t care if it is a long grind that takes a few months to complete but players must be given such options so that they’ll always have a carrot on the stick. People like me always collect everything during first 1-2 months sometimes in 2-3 weeks then we have nothing to chase.

This I don’t like this approach. There is always gear farming in every PvP game. In league of Legends you get more gold and farm gear faster than others to be stronger, in counter strike still the same, you farm money to buy better guns and equipment, why do you say that in WoW there should be nothing like that? It is stupid to ask for zero gear progression.

delete farm

lol no

This is maybe how you feel as an experienced player. But like I said, 1800 is top 15%.
Top 15% means that 85% of players can’t get there. You can’t exactly argue against that just because it “feels easy” to you.

Season start is actually the easyest as its the most active and people make the most progress when theres most people playing, like current season and before have been so that people play the first 1-2 days or week of the season and push their desired ratings duelist or elite and then all becomes stale and stagnant for the next 3-4 months till the last 1-2 weeks of season. So actually the window to progress is the first week and last weeks of season and between is kinda meh. It could use some improvement for the system so between the small windows the season would stay more active. Ops post is right eitherway that pvp lacks more rewards to also incentive the people who stop on 1.8 for their mogs.

Imo biggest problem beside the lack of rewards with wow rating system is that it rely entirely on participation and blizzard doesnt do much to compensate for it if theres large variations on participation, peoples progression just entirely rely on how many people play the game and when do they stop and come back etc and it feels bit silly when were paying sub for the entire season and theres large dips on people quitting for some reason x but nothing is done in months to adjust for the situation like so many times before when seasons dry towards middle. Imo either rework this system less participation dependant or start adjusting mmr for these variations that playerbase make when they quit retail and head into classic or something.

It doesnt help for the casual playerbase in mind either that the rated system is smurfed heavily by people with 20 alts of same class when they get bored on their mains. The situation in DF pvp is caused by lack of rewards in general for the casual player and the lack of any kind of adjustment for the system when it then gets deflated by people quitting due to already reaching their goals or getting annoyed by the smurfing on lower ratings or whichever other reason they have to quit playing.

My most constructive threads are never my most successful ones.

1600 you get 1 elite piece of gear and an achievement for it for that season

so technically… 1600 + is for rewards

Very few people consider achievements a proper reward though.

tbf, mounts , titles and achievements are all redundant

none of them feel rewarding unless its limited time only ( fomo)

Idk imo alot people take 1.8 and quit playing once the tmog is in the bag. So it seems like alot play only for mogs. But I cant show any statistics for this just my personal observation which might be wrong aswell. In theory increasing the amount of cosmetic rewards for various ratings past 1800 aswell might be motivation for some to continue playing.

Im just guessing based on what I see, myself I play for pvp and the gameplay I dont much have care for the cosmetics unless its something I want but I mostly use same mogs on all chars that are set on stone since they were made. Making game feel more fun and have rating system with consistent progression between seasons would be good start for some like me to play it more. I hate this one phase particularly middle of every season where only the most highest exp smurf on 20x alt and everyone else are waiting for the end of season to come play, blizzard need to do something so the game is more incentive to play middle of seasons for all of the players or change their rated system for arenas in the game or it just goes on like this that seasons are played for first week and for last 1-2 weeks and everything between it is just alot people waiting.

I fully support FOMO for rating gated rewards.
I agree it creates value and it makes the rewards feel meaningful.

PvP get awesome looking gear for transmogs and mounts, and the occasional toy, that I’ll never get because I hate pvp in mmorpgs.

i think the game in general lacks rewards that are meaningful

gear, mounts, achievements, titles dont cut it anymore

blizz need to be a bit more creative,
i like the idea of being able to dye gear or add illusions to shoulders / helms like enchants on weapons

They already said it wasn’t possible because they’d have to go over thousands of already existing models which weren’t made with that in mind, and basically recreate them from scratch.

It would also destroy Elite appearances because then you could just dye your gear the same color as the Elite version.

maybe they wont let you dye it certain colours to avoid clashing the sets

I think a seasonal PvP reward track would be amazing to free the current reward system from the dust it has accumulated over the years.

There are loads of rewards for casual players.

  • Armor and weapon appearances from previous seasons for Marks of Honor
  • All Vicious Mounts for winning ranked games above 1k rating

There can always be improvements, of course. For example:

  • “Elite Gladiator’s Ensemble” - Keep winning games above 1,8k rating, eventually, you will grind out a token for an elite set from previous seasons.
  • Same for 2,1k and 2,4k rewards.

I’d say the rating system needs some improvements like being able to climb even if the ladder is deflated. But to say that there are no rewards for new players is simply nonsense.

Ah yes, that way elite sets become worthless. Interesting idea.
