The new transmog system; Why I think it’s an issue from an RPers perspective

Hello hello you all, hope you’re enjoying the beta test!

As the title says, I’ve had some time to tinker and fiddle with the new transmog system rolling out in Midnight and have some thoughts and feedback to share. To be said; I don’t share a lot of the general populace’s issues with the system, but I do think there’s one glaring issue with it from an RPers’ perspective.

First off, where I disagree with most; the cost.

I think the first few posts we saw and the headline of “It’ll be 800k per character!” had folk freak out a bit. After tinkering with it a bit, and having had confirmation unlock slots will be account wide, I don’t think the cost of it is an issue (presuming the next issue is solved). It’ll be a steep upfront cost of some 20-50k- but after that it should be more or less free.

So what’s the issue then?

The issue I’ve found is with specifically swapping one or a few items around on the fly.

Say for example you’re RPing, walking around some road, and it starts raining. You want to pull up a hood, or put on a hat- how does one now accomplish this? I’ve found no good solution to the situation within the framework of the new system.

You either need to make a -whole- 2nd outfit set which is like “Clothes, but hat”. And if you have a few outfits, having a full second duplicate set for all of them “but hatted”, feels extremely inconvenient. Plus, this also does get expensive really fast. It gets even sillier with several variables, having a helmet on, and a sword- versus swapping helmet and putting on an axe- Hope you get what the issue is. This adds up super quickly, and you’ll start hitting the super expensive end of the set-list.

The other solution, would be to mark for example the head-slot as “Show what’s equipped”- This then requires you to carry around -the specific item you want to show-. Which, in some cases, as with my character using the trading post scarf, is impossible.

It goes further with some guildies having in my discord pointed out they use many such swaps. Changing boots, putting on cloaks, swapping weapons, even swapping weapons to some other weapon-enchant showing, the list goes on. Some people lamenting having to make three, if not four, variations of each of their outfits to satisfy these needs.

All of these cases aren’t easily solved in the current system, or I’ve at least not managed to find something that works. And it’s the one big issue I see with it. Would be super nice with some solution, but I’m honestly not sure what it would be.

For context; For the moment, the solution many RPers have is to simply carry around a full bag of transmogged heirlooms, having every sword, hat, hood, shield, cloak and boots you in some situation would want to put on- and then swap those around, which does work wonders, and are exactly what we want for the simplicity of it when we’re in character. A click in the moment. But as from Midnight, this simply won’t work anymore.

Obviously, I might have missed something, feel free to point that out if so, I’d be delighted. Else, we need this issue looked at I think.

Yeah something like being able to access the old system still and have that override the new system if I for example want to equip a particular hat would go a long way and be a simple and effective solution.

The price is outrageous. Because changing a full set will cost 5000-6000 g. This system is only good if you are creating one set and you stick with it forever. This is only good for players who are playing with one character and don’t have the creativity to create sets. Most of the players are wearing very good transmogs and changing it in every 2-3 weeks. This new system as restrictive as GW2’s system but GW2 is a F2P game (plus if I buy an outfit in GW2 I can use it forever I don’t have to pay 5000-6000 g every time if I want to use it again.)

For now. Maybe the price will change as it was changed for the Slots.
And if you use all possible slots (100g each now) there is much space to save some Sets.
Hopefully in Events like Fashionweek transmog will be free as it is now. Could save much gold if it remains

An override to use the old system would be great, seconding that. Or perhaps some way of having specific items holding their transmog despite whatever other armour you wear?

Never change THIS item.

There’s a lot of cool stuff that can be done with this system, but it does take away a fair bit too. The pricing is also a bit too high when it comes to actually making the outfits. Granted, you do it once and you never have to pay for it again. Could stand to knock that gold cost down a little, at least.

I’ve given the issue some thought, and think I’ve come up with a solution that would satisfy the needs we have and cover the issue that I brought up, while allowing the new system to function as intended. The easy option would simply be as many have already suggested; use both systems.

So here’s what I think would work;

  1. Nuke every active transmog in the game. Every equipped item, anything in bags and banks, just get rid of any current changed looks. While annoying for some RPers that will rely on this solution, this will break everyone else free from the old system. Force people to go seek out the new system. This is already the case on Beta.
  2. Re-wire every transmog vendor, be that those in the world, those on mounts, or those from toys, to the new, outfit based system. This will then make the vast vast majority transition to the new system. This is also already the case on Beta.
  3. And then, critically, add a new vendor. Can be something like “Time-Lost Ethereal < Legacy Transmogrifyer >”, to some off corner of the world. My suggestion would be to put it into a corner of the Caverns of Time. And, at this super special NPC you can still access the old system, right as it is today.

This would allow us RPers to then go with our Heirlooms to this hyper specific NPC and transmog those items specifically, and then carry them around in our bags as we are at the moment. It would probably even slot into the new system for many, using outfits, and then picking “Show what’s equipped”, and then having the option to use those transmogged heirlooms to show what armor and weapons we want through the new system.

It would also be very hard to “stumble onto” this NPC, meaning that the vast majority of people who’re not specifically looking for this functionality, would just use the new system found everywhere else.
