I always felt the key to the middle ground of making a Gnome not obnoxious is that the Gnome should take themselves fairly seriously in character even if the thing they’re doing is pretty silly.
Gnomes are also kinda hardwired to not think much about the past and always look ahead at the future, which adds to their bit of a zany/optimistic attitude. As long as its not overdone.
Also cutsey cupcakez gnomes are…annoying.
It’s all about balance, yeah. If you want to play a flashy, bombastic characters, then awesome. You do you boo. But at the same time, it’s important to remember that RP is collaborative and it’s no longer fun for those around you if your concept appears designed to claim and jealously guard the spotlight.
The ability to have a quick-fix for every problem also invalidates a lot of RP for others, and soon enough the super-gizmo gnome or awesome-archmage elf is going to be sat on their own, wondering why people don’t include them in their problems.
Same. I made my current gnome use tech, but without making much herself. She uses a lot of throwaway weapons and items, and prefers straight up brawling.
Vixi does some basic tinkering, but overall, she prefers to rely on her magic rather than gadgets. She’s also a generally pragmatic in view and calm, and very straight-forward in her approaches to things.
at a lot of these alliance tendencies that i did not know was happening…
ssssspanners.
They might have a lot to them, but gnome NPCs and PCs alike rarely reflect it.
If it looks, talks, smells (and, for the forsaken, tastes) like a joke race, people will inevitably treat it as one.
Unfortunate, but it is what it is.
Things tend to change drastically when on campaign. Its a coin toss.
Kalimdor Campaigns are usually fairly devoid of these issues.
Northern Eastern Kingdoms are worse.
Otherwise it depends on the kind of guilds you invite.
My, you’re a tall one!
In my experience they’re not as widespread as this thread might make them out to be. If you avoid the usual suspects (the Game of Thrones/Peaky Blinders dudes and such) these attitudes are suddenly quite rare.
It’s all kinda centralized in Stormwind, honestly.
I forget the source on that one but I’ve thought it a fascinating bit of unque race psychology and RP potential.
Agreed, which is a problem of Blizzard’s making. I think, in cases like these, the most appropriate response is to largely suspend our disbelief with the more silly hijinks of the gnomes (and goblins), in order to make them believable as characters in RP and not as one-dimensional gimmicks.
Blizzard’s sloppy writing is limiting, but we don’t have to let it pigeon hole our RP into its superficial cardboard cut-outs.
Who’s ready to see Millificent Manastorm be the true end boss of BfA?

Just add the little ´ at the end and front and the spaces arent needed
You could even say that Blizzard’s writing continuity only exists to enhance a story, not to tie the hands of the creators.

Legit though there is also often some kind of disdain IC involved which just baffles me. Why do heroic characters crap on normal dudes so much? It’s hard to play someone being amazed and grateful for feats of magic when they’re all accompanied by lots of sneering.
Absolutely, but not everyone is equally good at that. Hell, I’m pretty much a flawless superbeing, though I do think I’ve always remained quite humble, and even I at times just fail to take gnomes seriously in RP.
Thank you!
