No one needs crafted gear.
Just levelled to rank 4 the lgendary recipe, not even an achiev linked to it.
Wow is no more. We play now something between azeroth-call of duty and diablo

Oh but You can craft cool looking gear and mounts even!
Soo… better hurry up. Before blizz implement crafting boost too.
Professions (at least for me) completely died in Legion, which is ironic and sad because Legion was when they bragged about having their largest professions team.
WoD was the start of the downfall but at least I remember skinning for gold.
I miss it. I used to mine Ghost Iron Ore for fun, that’s right… it was satisfying mining my ores, smelting them (or AH-ing them raw) for a profit.
Adamantite was a fun farm too while farming my Talbulk reps.
Ghost Iron Ore, Trillium, and Kyparite (I only remember this one from all the Archaeology i’ve done in those areas though - i didn’t farm it like Ghost Iron)
Those are the MoP ores, I remember them clear as day.
From WoD - SL I remember Blackrock, Leystone, and Moonlite, one from each expansion except SL.
Gun to my head, ask me to name 1 SL ore without googling it, I’m a dead man. It’s a shame.
I’ve just googled it after the fact and genuinely don’t know any of them. I see Fel Slate from Legion and Storm Silver from BFA and it jogs my memory a tiny bit, but absolutely nothing for the SL ones. I don’t even know the colour of the ore or the icon.
Anyways, my rant is to emphasize how irrelevant professions are.
From doing it for fun to not even knowing the names.
Professions were sacrificed on the altar of M+ and e-sport/gogogoism.
With all this new unlimited gear coming into the game, the devs don’t have room to fit crafting, and because they want everyone running like their hair is on fire, they don’t want people spending a lot of time on gemming and enchanting their regular gear upgrades.
Which they used to put lots of lettuce around the rim of the plate to distract from the lack of beef in the middle.
The only way to make professions relevant again is to add m+ exclusive materials that let you craft competitive ilvl gear. Since the design philosophy nowadays is that the game starts at max level and nothing before that matters.
I wish we’d go back to the old system of profession bonuses and crafted gear worth making.
I remember doing more with professions in WOD and Legion. In WOD you had entire buildings based around your profession via the garrison. In Legion I remember doing more for engineering. In BFA it was really on the decline and in SL they are nonexistent.
One profession they really need to do something about is archaelogy its just there. Either add quests or get rid of it. It would be great if all professions had questlines that you could level them up this way, instead of going out and making x of this item to get useless rep.
Professions have been pointless for a long time. It’s a shame really. I never cared about them but I liked selling frozen orbs etc
The thing that frustrates me with professions is with the additional of optional reagents they had an excellent way to make crafting relevant again by making it a principle source of catch up gear and they could have made it so you can create big ilevel optimal reagents which require a hefty mat grind but are unique (so you can only have one piece of gear buffed like this).
And yet they have largely stopped the optional crafting reagents at 168 ilevel…when the game starts throwing 171 at you pretty quick. Why are there not 184 and 197 versions which you can unlock after certain progressions in the game modes ie get the +5 Achi for m+ get access to the recipie etc
Just an utter waste. Had a really good opportunity with optional reagents and it’s been pretty much wasted and restricted, so crafting is basically once again only relevant for stuff like enchanting and alchemy and engineering and the rest are largely just gold making. Leggo crafts aren’t enough to make them relevant again (and the grind for these is horrendous for rank 4, who cooked up that idea? Having to craft 45 leggos of exactly the same type to get a rank 4 recipie is absurd)
I liked them the most in WOD actually.
Crafted gear was useful throughout entire expansion, as they released ilvl boosters in content patches (or rather - content patch, there was just one real content patch in WOD)
You didn’t had to grind raids or anything to craft this gear - all it needed is a bunch of daily cooldown materials. Anyone could craft and wear those pieces, raiders or total casuals.
I used those professions to make a ton of gold through alt stacking and garrison material production. I would log in every day, just making cooldown mats, then after some time crafting those ilvl upgrade tokens and posting them on AH for quite a bit of profit.
Currently I can’t find any recipe that would make a good profit. Usually the outcome of crafting sells for less gold than raw materials it required to make it in the first place! It was especially common with Enchanting early on, where the crystal would be 6k gold but the actual enchant was half that price or less. So i just farmed skins / herbs and then once those were dominated by bots - switched to farming trash in mythic nathria, getting a drop every few hours or so. I just can’t be bothered with professions anymore, they don’t do anything. Even starter gear crafted by them is total crap that is outclassed by world quest stuff.
Yeah, abandoned JC on my alt a few months ago. Useless profession now.
Double gathering, or maybe engineering for my alts. My raiding main gets alchemy for the 2 hour flasks, but that’s it. Even the trinkets are rubbish in SL and not worth the effort of grinding rep for.
Ultimately, professions now are mostly about making raid consumables, or armour for freshly dinged alts. If you bother to learn to craft the 168 gear, it’ll sell; but profit margins aren’t high and it’s probably not worth grinding whichever rep you need for the recipes.
There is so much potential in so many professions.
I really dont understand why we have the current low budget version
I mean, right now, 6 months into the Patch… yes, Crafting is pretty pointless. Even Crafting Rank 4 legendaries, there is no profit anymore, so really is a pointless exercise and I am sorry you lost out on the money.
However, at the start of the expansion for the first 3-4 months. Professions were very useful. I was selling Rank 4 legendaries left right and centre. I have banker full of Gold now, which will be paying my way over the next few years of the game.
I agree they could do more with Professions. But there will always be players (Goblins), who focus on the profession part of the game and own the markets.
Professions in SLs are literally devoid.
Fishing had all of its cool rewards and motivation for doing it.
Tailoring doesn’t allow you to make cool random group items like it did in Legion.
Mining / skinning seems to have nothing special linked to it.
No quest lines, no lvls to how effective your minining/alchemy/whatever is. No cool profession NPC story lines.
Crafting a legend to high lvls rewards nothing (achievements, etc). Legend crafts require too many mats and you can’t sell them at a fair price even if you wanted to, unless you want to sell them at 1/10 of the cost it was to produce them.
That made Professions “essential” to high end content, rather than a personal choice… something were always intended to be.
Every profession but Alchemy, Enchanting and potentially Engineering is effectively dead yes.
Yes. And if you didnt have the money/ways to control the lego market straight from the start it was way cheaper for someone not to craft to rank 4 and sell the mats for it instead and just buy the crafted versions off the AH
Just look at JC. Since the removal of fixed gem slots the profession is pretty much on the dying bed. Out of all systems we have right now (especially with simming and gems still being a thing regardless) gemslots are by far a non issue. Including their socket boni if you used the correct colours.
I think that was an attempt to make Professions more relevant in the wake of Relic of the Past being introduced in BfA. The focus there would imply that the primary vision for Professions would be Transmog… but veteran players wouldn’t see that as a plus, if the looks available are already learned.
JC pieces have guaranteed Gem sockets… or did you mean Gem sockets now being a random bonus to loot drops/rewards?
