Most players played with “show enemy nameplate” off “Default is off”
Most players first installed addons when hitting 60 and start raiding…
There weren’t guides for everything back in 2005

i just played wotlk without addons like 4 months and tried to find log quests for 4days by read. Which is harder? my life or this game?
The only addon I have is gatherer and one to tell me how long is left on tower caps in AV. I always will view addons as cheats for crap players, same as Macros, I only use emote macros and when I watch streamers they have all this macros that do stuff for them, it’s because they lack the skill to play WOW the way it was designed, I am probably a tiny minority of true wow players left.
This wasnt the only reason im afraid.
WoW classic was hard because of how fragile ur character was pulling 2 mobs solo could kill a player beneath level 30 depending what you pull.
WoW vanilla wasnt complex. Learning a class wasnt hard. However, monsyers hit like a truck, pulling adds was dangerous, and being CC’d would lead to death.
Vanillas hard for how easy it is to die. The open world was dangerous and was built to kill you.
If you want to compare, I pull same mob as level 6 warrior in mulgore. Fairly same time to kill it. On retail I’m at 99% hp when it dies. On Classic HC I’m at 45% hp.
Same gear, stats everything. But scaling just ruins the difficulty.
Including this my warrior would soon learn ability to heal itself. BUT. on Retail, killing any of these creatures means nothing, because of scaling the weapon drop you find does nothing.
On HC, this early weapon find might double or triple your dps. So it feels very rewarding.
This how I still play. I love play like 2006 Only would love Blizz to roll back ALL changes from Vanilla.
I love feel professions, exploring, new gear everything meaningful.
Also bad connections and slow PC made game harder back then. Not only no knowing.
30% more hp 50% more dmg…
it was “hard” because wow was new and everyone sucked
even when they entered their first raid during vanilla
HC realms are that way . You will find that mobs are the same there, but they are dangerous if you don’t watch how you are pulling them.
Also between the launch of Vanilla and the launch of TBC the game changed cosiderably. Pretty much every class was revamped content modified and tweaked. We’re now playing the end version, from just before TBC.
