Thoughts on DF story so far?

Title. What are your thoughts on the story so far?

SL was probably the worst expansion story wise in game, DF is definitely an improvement in some ways… However, SL had a “syndrome” of the side stories being OK, and the main story being meh, and DF definitely suffers from that syndrome too.

All in all, the main story is kinda meh, while the good stories are all side stories. Don’t get me wrong, not that all side stories are good, some are also meh, but the best stories of the expansion are side stories. Veristrasz, brave little adventurers, Taivan, Radiya, Tuskarr painter (imo the best story of the expansion), lost ruins, misty vale, even the chieftain’s ottuk are all side stories and not really related to the main story.

This “syndrome” is also quite obvious with 10.0.7, with Orc and Human heritage stories being really really good (especially the Orc one, but Human too don’t get me wrong), but they’re not really related to DF at all, than Baine and Furbolg stories being good too, while the main story in the Forbidden Reach being meh and forgetful.

Don’t get me wrong, the main storyline had some good moments too, like Kalecgos being: “The power the Blue Dragonflight is not some ley lines or artifacts, it is family.” or Chromie being like: “I’ll find another way!”, but those are minor and a few. That brings me too the imo worst part of the story definitely being the Green Dragonflight one, when we ended up sacrificing Malfurion (at least temporarily, but still one of the most iconic Warcraft characters) so that Merithra could get a little confidence boost… yeah. And paradoxically that storyline had one of the best dialogues in the expansion that were ruined by the pointlessness of it all… like Malfurion and Tyrande emotional goodbye being well written, but pointless since it’s only for a couple of months (and they’re used to being apart for hundreds of years), and the final scene where the old dragon says to Merithra’s son: “I never thought I’d see the Dreamer fly over the gardens again.” despite the fact he’s been seeing her all along…

However, DF does have one huge advantage over SL, and that’s Raszageth. Finally, after a while, WoW had a decent villain. She had her motivations, her actions were justified, and despite her shallow actions (which make perfect sense given her back story), she was actually a complex character, not necessarily being bad or evil, but simply fighting for what she believed in, and wanting to free her brethren. Not to mention an awesome model, powers, and most of all voice acting.

And to end note, DF story seems to be far more focused on the Dracthyr rather than Dragons and Dragonflights, which was expected, but not sure is it smart, since they’re new with a shallow backstory… but, we’ll still have to see how it plays out.

I agree with you here. Although it’s still quite early, we don’t know where it’s going exactly, who is the Big Bad for DF? They could have some great twists coming or they might poop the bed.

I quite like the Order Vs Chaos theme they have going, Titans & Dragons like Order, the Elements think Order is too restrictive / controlling. It could go all Vorlons Vs Shadows from Babylon 5 where we thought the Vorlons were the goodies until they started destroying planets (ala Sargeras) to prevent the Shadows coming. Are the Titans really goodies?

It’s Iridikron. Though I agree, we hardly know anything about it.

Yeah, that’s the big point they’be hinted at. But I’m not buying it. It would be fine, if we haven’t seen the literal hell of the Old God empire, nothing can be that bad.

Is there someone pulling the strings that we don’t know about yet?
Are the Void Lords involved or even the old gods?

it’s boring. especially after an expansion where we were so in touch with the characters of the lore. i don’t care about any of the dragons other than the ones i know before because they weren’t properly introduced. following renown for the locals of the land rather than dragonflights don’t help either. we should’ve joined to the flights instead like covenants.

Well the story seems nice. Much more Azeroth than Shadowlands. It doesn’t ruin any RP narrative like shadowlands kinda did.

However, I still haven’t bought it because I’m not entirely ready to decide yet. I’m having fun anyway without the expansion, I’m just missing out on 2 things

  1. The ducks/ otter mounts
  2. The valdrakkan zone I heard so much about

Once you tasted Dragon flying?
You will NEVER want to go back on the old slow mounts and would avoid the rest of Azeroth where you are forced to crawl in the air, instead zooming with mach 5 :face_with_hand_over_mouth:

I’m not a fan of dragon meat :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

No but in all seriousness I do think it’s a neat expansion. I’m a big fan of the movie how to train your dragon, and this reminds me of that.

Very Viking/ dragon themes

Boring.
Uncaptivating.
I don’t care.

BFA + SL killed my love for WoW lore, and the new lore seems to be written without love/passion/Coolfactor.

It’s fine.
I don’t feel strongly about it; I just take it at face value.

It’s nice so far, nothing like Argus plotline, but it is simple and as you said Raszageth was a good villain - because she wasn’t really a villain. In fact, I’m more suspicious about the dragonflight itself, and the titans. Not that messing around with the void is any better, but I get the feeling we’re just getting started with DF lore. The forbidden reach feels more like a side quest, as it should be to an extent, being a minor patch, but that could be skipped if need be. The real climax I think will be for what happens after 9.1, which is a bit more exciting than 9.0. They’re building it up slowly I guess.

But as you said there’s also the side quests that are good. And, generally speaking, atleast for me I find it nice to be back to the whole positive and to an extent carefree mood of Warcraft, with its dark sides as well. But being the expansion focused on exploration by quite a large degree, I really feel that Hearthstone trailer’s explorer league theme in my head as the main feeling.

I’m not saying it’s the best lore so far, but it feels good to me. I’m content, not super hyped as of now (aside for the titans and old gods plot which intrigues me quite a lot), but content is good enough to me now!

I’ve skipped the entire lore for this expansion by alt tabbing during cut scenes and muting dialogues due to unbearable voice acting. It has been great so far.

I give the whole thing a thumbs down, but my expectations are so low that it doesn’t really matter.

Those are two of the moments that made me want to punch the monitor. Of course, the monitor didn’t write them, so my target would be misplaced.

I hate what they did to Kalec. HATE it. He may be the youngest of the Aspects, but he has lived through more war and loss and hard decisions than any human, and he is portrayed as an uncertain teenager. Of course, he’s male, so in the mind of people like Danuser has to be written as weak, but dammit I’ve always liked Kalec, and this is an atrocity.

Nozdormu is likely the wisest of the dragons, certainly the most far-seeing, and has lived with a partial knowledge of what must be for millennia. By now, he would be inured to reminders. And he would know that prophecies, no matter the medium, are always misleading.

The forbidden reach made me absolutely hate dragon riding

It’s alright. I’d wish these primalists would tell me what they are supposedly lying to me about, though, rather than just going “Oooh woe is meee~” and it’s a little bit too… Huggy but I am enjoying the positivity because the world is in such a state right now, I needed that break. The gnolls are absolutely fabulous and I am really looking forward to 10.1.

Huggy is a great word for it. :+1:

There are just these little patches of dialogue that feel completely wrong, like they were from a My Little Pony game about little kids being coached to be nice to one another. Several exchanges where people are being oh-so-considerate of somebody else’s feelings instead of adults getting on with what needs to be done.

I have 7 characters on lvl 70, all got there through questing. I can barely tell you anything about the story because it’s all such an unmemorable garbage that my brain automatically put it into the trash bin. Honestly I know that there is a story but what it’s all about is whatever.

Knowing there’s some more cringe American woke crap injected in the story, I skipped even more every quest. I started the expansion by reading the first ones as habit I got from Final Fantasy XIV, but the writing and executions are just not the same.

So I quickly ended up skipping everything except the Black flight cutscenes because I like them (due to old lore).

Outside of that, it’s just not super interesting. Hell even the first dungeon I did felt underwhelming as shown in a video comparing WoW dungeons with other games. How bosses don’t feel like bosses and the visual hints are so awful that it explains why the majority use addons just to get basic information.

Basically Shadowlands killed the lore and the story was so bad it destroyed any interest I had. « We want to do it right with Arthas » then show him for 5s as a blue ball only to desynth him lol

So for now I’m just thinking about transmogs and Trading Post while playing other games.
