Thoughts on the new Arachnophobia Mode in the war within?

I guess its a nice touch for people who hate spiders but at the same time I feel its a strange one, I’ve always been told to face your fears and control them rather than the latter.

Would like to see what people think

My main thing is I hope it doesn’t take away from the story of the game for those who use it

I’d like to ensure that it won’t be abused for some unfair advantage, for example changing the model of every spider to something that would allow some player to have greater visibility behind an enemy, or better targeting through smaller hit-box or something like that.

If it cannot be exploited, it should be expanded to more than just spiders.

Wow had spiders for 20 years and its suddenly a problem? Arachnophobia didn’t just get invented, it existed 20 years ago too. Nah, i dont buy it, this isnt about arachnophobia, it’s about pandering to the fragile curling generation that can’t handle anything and would rather point fingers and place blame, than deal with their own problems.
If you can’t tell the difference between a cartoonish videogame spider trapped behind the screen, and a real one, maybe turn of the pc and go talk to someone.
The world is a big scary place, and there are thousands of kinda of phobias, but we can’t protect everyone from everything, especially not in movies, tv and videogames.

I dont care that they added this mode, it doesn’t affect me either way. But i do care about the thought behind it, i think its a bad trend to start, whats next? A snake filter? A mouse/rat filter? What about fatphobia? Will we get a Kul’tiran filter? Or how about skin color? Or gender? Where is the limit? Wich phobias are acceptable and wich aren’t? Maybe im taking my examples to the extreme, but it’s just to strengthen my point. Everybody has something they are scared of, but you can’t design a game that protects everyone from their fears.

Arachnophobia is a real thing. I know a few people who suffer from it and it is a strange condition. Bugs, beetles or other “creepy” insects are not a problem, but spiders? Complete freeze or panic.

I don’t see why adding a mode like this to the game is a problem. If I want to see big, scary spiders I can. I’m not affected in any way by this, but it may remove an obstacle for others.

I couldn’t care less. I’ll never use it.

A new mode that would replace draenei with gnomes however…

I am definitely one of those. I actually realize how irrational it is but its out of my control. That said, they don’t bother me in games as I know they are pixels on a screen, not here in front of me, but everyone is different.

Just to clarify I never said it was a problem I was just curious of others thoughts as your comment seems to hint that I do have a problem with it

I’ve played several games with aracnophobia mode. I never use it so i dont really have an opinion on it. Good for those that needs it.

Come on now, this is one of those cosmetic things that have no impact on the enjoyment of the game of anyone not affected by it. But it does help those who are.

As for a precedent, we already have had that with various toys that allow us to change our character to some other race. Heck, you can achieve 100% uptime of altering your character from their base race with toys even if you die every 3 minutes.

We even have a toy that allow us to change everyone else to corgis!

I want an arachnophilia mode.

This topic is literally irrelevant it will only matter to those who use it i dont think many will use it either.

And if they do it does not affect me or the way others play the game so who cares?

Irrational fears are just that, irrational. You can’t make sense of them.

What I can’t understand is how some seem put out that such a simple measure is put in the game. I’ve played other games where it turns them into kittens. Comically so, like a cardboard cutout.

For WoW it’s a crab, reusing an existing model already in the game. There is no cheat, no gain from it. No exploit. It’s just removing something that 3-6% of the population suffer from.

Although I have a complete breakdown IRL if I have to deal with a spider in my house, I’m fortunate that most of the in game models don’t bother me. I do get the creeps from the spider mount animations moving around.

I think it’s great they are adding stuff like this to the game for people.

Imagine if Vegans start with their things about wow and animals etc…

Next expansion all npc modified to be vegetables with bosses being modified vegetables

veganism is a choice and they can get pooped, phobias as explained earlier are irrational.

If you think spiders in a game is bad, I’ve seen grown men shake in fear at kittens

I’m very happy that they are adding the feature, and I can toggle it on when I need it.
Not every spider in the games triggers the fear, but there’s definitely areas/moments where this transformation is welcome.

Phobia literally means irrational fear. Don’t try to argue with someone as to why they shouldn’t have it. It won’t work, I guarantee it.

Though I don’t think it’s that irrational. There’s a very good reason many humans have it - in our natural habitat there were spiders whose bite could outright kill you.

It’s the same reason why a cat will jump 26 inches into the air if you place a cucumber next to them - they have a fear of snakes and they only saw the vague shape in their peripheral vision. ( also, don’t do that to your cat :heart_eyes_cat:)

I don’t really mind this feature. I think it’s a bit much, but hey. It’s fine. I’d rather they focus on more general readability and control issues, but honestly I’m completely okay with it.

I love this change! I don’t have arachnophobia (on the contrary, actually–I like spiders), but this can make the game more accessible for some people, so I am all in favour of it.

… not really a fan of spiders and it’s amusing to me as I love riding my spider mount especially in remix at the moment! In RL, I will leave them be and will freak out if they start moving fast or move somewhere I can’t get to rescue them and put them outside.

The needles phobia you list Puny is me! Get a few palpitations when I see one on screen being used or coming near me, once it is being used I calm down - weird!

I would so use an option that turns snakes into cucumbers!
But maybe I’m digressing from the actual point!
