Sira only had to carry Maiev’s burden of leadership for a very little time during Legion when Maiev was briefly captured. Wolfheart’s events regarding Maiev seem to have been retconned as the Tomb of Sargeras audio-drama states that Maiev was still the leader of the Watchers during WoD, having sent Cordana (who was in contact with Maiev throughout the expansion) and Sira along with other Wardens to assist the Alliance and Khadgar. Her status as the leader of the Wardens is re-affirmed in Legion, with Tyrande and Malfurion even being aware of her. Back in Cata Sira was just a named member of the Shadow Wardens who are seemingly entirely separate from the Watchers.
I just want to go back on that part of the conversation because it’s interesting, I think.
There is actually something I like when you pass from one language to another, is that some words, concepts, cannot be translated exactly. Two of my favorite examples would be “Eerie”, one of my favorite words in english who doesn’t have an exact equivalent in french (“Sinistre”, “Étrange” and “Inquiétant” are fairly close but nuances are lost, none of those is the exact idea behind “Eerie”); and from the opposite side the french “Si” (which is, by my understanding, different from the spanish “Si”/yes, but since I do not speak spanish, feel free to correct me on that) doesn’t have an english equivalent at all. The closest I can do is a slightly vindicative “Yes I do/ Yes I will/etc.”. Or you would recall Brig’, when I first arrived and I was having difficulties finding something equivalent for wishing “bon courage” or “bon appétit”. (I still haven’t found so y’all get french good wishes sometimes.)
I think it isn’t too far fetched to imagine that something similar happens to elven names. Perhaps in Thalassian “He Who Walks the Sun” have a subtext idea of being the First One To Do It, And It’s Important. “Reddawn” would be the best they could come with for a word that’s actually “That one specific hour of the morning when the sun just rises up and the sky bled red, also there’s an heavy subtext of renewal/rebirth or something”, stuff like that. And we come with the complication that no matter which language our characters are speaking in, ultimately we’re always in english. Therefor, we’re limited to the nuances of english (nuances that absolutely exist, I’m not saying that they don’t) and it’s complicated to illustrate the difficulties of translation, the way nuances are lost, when you’re actually staying in only one language.
I really love this sentiment of “Nu-uh, nelfs would rather die than become undead!”
I mean… Can you imagine the scenario?
Forsaken and their resurection-valkyrs has a lone nelf cornered:
Forsaken: “Moahahah, we gonna make you one of us, moahaha!”
Nelf: “Never! I’ve got thousands of years of living! I will rather die than become undead!”
Forsaken: “… uhm…”
Nelf: “What?”
Forsaken: “Well it’s just… You see… That’s sort of how this works.”
Nelf: “What are you on about?”
the forsaken scratches its rotting chin
Forsaken: “Well it’s just… We can’t really make you undead if you’re still alive, can we?”
Nelf: “Oh… Wow… Fair point… Now I feel silly.”
Forsaken: “No worries, mate. Anyone could have made that mistake…”
awkward silence
Forsaken: “So… Anyway… If it’s all the same to you, could we get on with it…? Me bashing your head in and then these weird angel things doing what they do. It’s nothing peronal you know. Just, we’ve got a lot of Nelfs to get through tonight…”
Nelf: “You do? I menan, yes, sure go ahead.”
Forsaken: “Thanks mate.”
the forsaken procedes to beating the nelf to death with a blunt object and then lloks over to the valkyrs.
Forsaken: “Give it a moment ladies. Let the poor thing have its moment of death before we pop the question of ressurection.”
a few moments of awkward silence pass while the forsaken scratch his chin
Forsaken: “Right… That should do.”
the forsaken clears his throat
Forsaken: “You rwady to come back now?”
Dead nelf: “…”
Forsaken: “Come on. We don’t have all day. It’s a simple enough question. Yes or no?”
Dead Nelf: “Yeah, allright… Being dead wasn’t all that fun anyway…”
the forsaken turns to the valkyrs
Forsaken: “That’s a yes. Do your thing.”
the valkyrs procedes to start the ressurection
The Forsaken mumbles to himself: “Nine more to go. I tell you, they really make these WQs a time-drain… Makes me long for the days when I was looting zhevra hooves in the Barrens…”
First Stormwind. Then the world. Tal anu’men no Ren’dorei!
We need to raise Arthas so he can purge these void elves.
Give it some time for the dust to settle and people to develop their Void Elf characters. Do note that the big hype and influx is now over and please stop throwing everyone into the same basket of “Stormwind RPer”.
Also, dear Death Knight RPers, show some sympathy and don’t forget the first year of WotLK and how much crap we got thrown on our collective head back then about the class on all levels (lore, RP, PvP, PvE). Things did worked out well later down the line.
Except that in the Warfront, Sira confirms that she has been carrying Maiev’s burden of leadership ever since Maiev went rogue, i.e. Cata.
New lore > old lore. Such is the way with Blizzard’s writing.
Why are people so eager to defend Undead Nelves. Do they just like the idea of the Night Elves getting -even worse- storytelling in the Lore, or is it just forsaken fanboyism? “yass queen.” and all.
I dont get why people are so eager to defend Undead Nelves. Do they just like the idea of the Night Elves getting -even worse- storytelling in the Lore, or is it just forsaken fanboyism?
I don’t get why people are so eager to attack undead nelves. Do they just like the idea of Night Elves being idealised, or is it just Forsaken hatred? “Lich Queen” and all.
I dont like them, because the last thing the Night Elves need Meta-wise is to be put on the Butcher’s slab to prop up the Forsaken. Not to mention how nonsensical it is.
Then again, it aint a Faction War expansion without a bit of Forsaken Bias from Blizzard.
Because Night Elf Death Knights are not a thing, eh?
They aint Forsaken.
Because Night Elf Death Knights are not a thing, eh?
Those aren’t really an argument for nelf forsaken. Nelf DKs had to be mindcontrolled in order to work for the ones who killed them, and when that control broke they bit back.
There -was- the possibility they were being mind-controlled, but Blizz nixxed that so they wouldnt taint their precious Forsaken “free will”, to hell with the effect that has for the Nelves, amiright? Their fault for not playing Horde.
I don’t get why people are so eager to attack undead nelves. Do they just like the idea of Night Elves being idealised, or is it just Forsaken hatred?
For my part it comes down to night elves having been given the short end of the narrative stick for years. Now in their hour of retribution and justice for the unjustly slain, the entire thing is cheapened because the Horde needs more undead fodder?
I also like the notion that night elves are in tune with nature to an extent only the tauren can rival, and turning that on its head (and doing so at this particular moment in their story) just doesn’t do it for me. If you’re enjoying that “twist”, good on you.
Blizzard nixxed it because forsaken free will has been a staple and having them suddenly mind control undead would dunk on years of forsaken storylines, yes.
But remember, Night Elves can’t ever want to hurt their own people! Certainly not after traumatic events.
Nope.
Too perfect. Incorruptible.
The Night Elves have been turning on each other and nursing grudges longer than their ears.
Nope.
I mean it’d be like if Sylvanas decided to stay with Arthas because she feels Quel’thalas failed her for letting her die.
The whole premise of the forsaken nation was to resist those who cursed you with undeath to serve them.
And turning what should have been the Nelves finally having a storyline where they strike back at the Horde, and have their hour of power and retribution, into a thinly veiled Forsaken power fantasy isn’t Dunking on the Night Elves?
I like how a topic discussing void elf RP got corrupted into a discussion about undead night elves. As if some kind of diversion happened, slowly and unnoticed. That’s kinda meta.
