I would say this is certainly a big factor too. I don’t mean to make it out as if a poorly portrayed racist character is always a sign of what the person is really like, so I agree that it’s all too often a lazy way of having an obvious flaw. It’s kind of always the go-to one as well since it’s easy to do which makes it very, very boring.
It doesn’t help that these sorts of characters are just impossible to interact with as well: RP is a collaborative effort, and it’s honestly just not fun for every single instance of RP to be a torrent of abuse from some unimaginative idiot in Stormwind.
In terms of actual void elves, though, I think they’re a wasted opportunity, both down to Blizzard and the community for many of the reasons already stated. Mistrust of them is actually something that could be interesting with them earning their place in the Alliance and contesting with the Lightforged etc., but alas, all we get are edgelord nutcases and people who hate them just for being purple elves rather than for their use of the Void or being former members of the Horde.
A lot of people stand between her and Tyrande/Maiev. I doubt the night elves will just stand aside and let Sira go on her crusade to get vengeance against them specifically. If they did, I’m sure their jobs would be a lot easier.
We don’t know what the Val’kyr whispers the soul when making the offer. It could very well be that they made a convincing sales pitch, but the reality of it after they come back isn’t “all that”. Not necessarily lied to, just conveniently omit some details. Also the promise of vengeance is usually a very good motivator, ask Genn. He’s willing to forsake all logic and potentially doom the world just because he wanted vengeance for his son at the worst possible time in history.
People who undergo tragedy aren’t always logical. That’s what makes them interesting characters (to some).
So they are willing to kill everyone they knew and cared about just to get back at two persons? Even after their race just went through near-genocide shortly before?
They don’t have to be logical however. I’d just like them to not be completely 180 turn however.
Granted, we still have to see how this story will go out, but so far I personally don’t like the first impressions.
I agree that this is likely what happens and it’s a good explanation, but I just wish Blizzard would be clearer on these things. They go to great lengths to explain things that should never have been explained (e.g. when they completely ruined the mystery surrounding the Dark Riders) when details on things like this would be far more interesting.
Though I guess maybe Forsaken wouldn’t be consciously aware of what the soul is offered - still, that could be clarified at least.
Undeath stops your inhibitions and warps your mind.
Sira’s resentment has been building up for years now since Maiev went rogue and abandoned her to lead the Wardens and carry all her alone. She’s a person who got screwed over time and time again by Tyrande and Maiev, and she met her end serving them when all she was all along was a pawn. It wasn’t a complete spur of the moment 180, it was a long time coming. Add a bit of having her race abandoned to extinction by Elune and you’ve got yourself a stew.
Everything she believed in was a lie.
Granted Sira is a fresh new character*, but her backstory alludes to that resentment building up for years – especially when she starts unloading all of Maiev’s bull at her in the Warfront. The first character to acknowledge it happened too instead of forgiving Maiev as if she could do no wrong.
*She existed since Cata when Maiev went rogue, but they didn’t go in-depth with their relationship back then.
Fair enough. I can’t say I agree with all of it nor do I think this will pay off long-term but I admit that your reasoning makes sense. I think I’m done with this topic for now. Thanks for the discussion.
i wouldn’t mind folks rping them properly out in the world as off the books alliance specialists who struggle to juggle duty and the voices in their heads rather than just purple humans.
If you’re gonna do it at least try to get into the theme of it
People seem to gravitate towards this idea that “mature themes” (lmfao) such as racism or being a prick inherently makes them a better roleplayer when it comes off as the exact opposite.
More often than not it’s an excuse to simply wail on races that are disliked OOC, and it really shows. Man it’s painful. There’s a reason I veered away from the Kalimdor-Horde side of roleplay back in Cataclysm/early Mists and that was it.
I leave for an hour and there are 30 new responses
Anyways, when it comes to night elven ressurection, it doesn´t make sense. Delaryn and Sira feeling abandoned by Elune and Tyrande and then raised into undeath, which strengthens their emotions and makes them furious at Tyrande and maybe even other night elves, to the point where they attack them? That makes sense and could be used as a way to develop Tyrande even further, making her feel bad for letting her people die.
But they should have turned at Sylvanas before that.
We have two leaders. Enemy leader genocided your people, while your leader failed to protect them, yet you join the enemy? That doesn´t make sense and that´s what people have problem with. If there was mind control by Val´kyr, that would make sense, but Blizzard did not even hint at that. Their explanation is that night elves are angry at Elune and Tyrande for failing them, but somehow, this anger does not reach to Sylvanas who killed them?
That is bad writing.
You know how it is. A race is introduced with blu-ish eyes and a model similar to the model people used to roleplay a half-elf/high-elf before (eyes are blue ic) and you have a catalyst for a gigantic surge of people on that single race.
One of the reasons people even play Horde is purely because of Blood elves and if people can play Alliance and look similar to blood elves, they probably will.
That said not enough of them roleplay with the voices as a key factor and are in fact, just roleplayers who wanted a prettier model and treat them as if they’re still blood elves but Alliance aligned. This isn’t going to die down like the demon hunter/death knight surges either.
Sadly I am by no stretch of the imgination a Void elf expert, nor can I say that I’ve had too many run ins with them, primarily though because I have a tendacy to avoid Stormwind most of the time I wager from the looks of this thread, regarding Void Elf humans.
As with all races in WoW, I can see them having atleast some appeal in RP, given their internal struggle and place within the grand scheme of things of the Alliance, so I can understand some people wishing to roleplay them and explore that side of the roleplay. Of course, I don’t consider myself a fool and just dismiss, that Void Elves may nowadays be seen quite often in casual RP scenes potraying as ‘Humans’ be it that the term is vague though I get a rough idea what is meant by it.
I consider Void elves and Lightforged Draenei (The race I currently enjoy most) to be of the same batch in terms of their concepts. While the Lightforge naturally don’t have the constant conflict within their minds. The Void Elves and Lightforged both sem to be called into being for a grander purpose than just living live by the daily as a flowerist, or adventurer. They don’t exactly have cities or cultures of their own, nor true society’s to speak of. Their concept is goal and mission orientated. Soldiers, specialists for a specific purpose. As it stands, The Alliance’s progress in the war.
Which if people don’t pursue that heavily on these two particular races, and instead RP them as ‘Humans’ in Stormwind. It may appear, out of place. That isn’t to say that even these two races don’t enjoy some me time, every so often. But their mission orientated mindset, should in my eyes. Always take priority. They changed after all, primarily for that mission mindset.
What do you mean the Lightforged have difficulty fitting in? I see them serving as Innkeepers, priests, Quartermasters everywhere, same with void elves really.
Also, void elves are a mistake, they should’ve been Highvale Elves, and the Silver Covenant should’ve gone down that path too.
Damn mages ruined everything, the Highvale way is the only way for High Elves
