Sure - but when telling a story and you present your players with a challenge, do they not want to “win”?
Do you refer to DnD or WoW here?
Yes - both.
Out of curiosity, what would your definition of a hero-type character/roleplayer even be? To me it’s always been less about skillset or power-level and more the character being simply, at the very least, a capable individual with a ‘heroes mentality’. E.G: Solve problems, save people from danger, that sort of stuff. The easiest ‘trap’ they fall into, in that regard, are self-inserts, which aren’t necessarily OP.
I almost lost this post because the thread is moving so fast but I think this is a source of misunderstanding.
It’s not a game in the sense that tennis is a game, in my opinion. It’s a game in the way that collaborative writing is a game. It’s a key distinction to make.
Forgive me for starting to struggle to keep up with responding to everyone!
The main trap is not knowing how to stop showing off. As someone else described, the kinds of people who throw a tantrum when they can’t oneshot an ogre in an event that isn’t ruin by their guild for a change. Or the ones who emote their way to victory every time with no regard for how it might simply erase the challenge and therefore RP for other characters in the area.
Get one thing wrong and the usual kinds jump on your back. Uff.
Woo I’m a ‘usual’ now. Progress
(((the usual suspects))) at it again
I thought it was pertinent criticism and I decided to gently needle (which ashi took in much better faith than you)
Trust me we’re struggling to respond because we can’t make sense of anything you’re saying
It is psychologically impossible to separate them. You are literally playing them through yourself - it’s impossible to be impartial.
But to me this all sounds like a virtue signal of “Oh you cannot choose to try and have your character win, you need to play them like someone you won’t ever play.”
That to me just sounds like you’re playing an NPC then, you breathe life into your character. You’re allowed to do do such, it’s your character.
No, not you haha. But that is another tedious thing. Some people cannot post without others jumping down their throats.
returns sadly to the basement
Come out after jumping at me ten times or so and I may listen <3
I’ll concede to that and say that’s a fair explanation, then.
It’s a discussion forum

I feel like the thing about DnD is that while it is an RP medium, it is built from the ground up to be a game first and foremost, in the gamey sense. Everything is mechanical, there are balance elements in play like the challenge rating, and so on.
WoW doesn’t have that. In its core, its RP is just sandbox storytelling. You can do anything. Because there are no game mechanics in place there is no win-loss element in the same way, and I see it more like writing a book than playing a game. When you write a book you are not invested in the victory of any one particular character, right? You just want a good story. That is how I look at things.
I will bow out here, though. Too many posts coming too quick, I don’t have time to address each fully and properly! Thanks for the chat, Daria.
Welcome to the ‘usual suspects’ gang.
if you find it impossible to separate yourself from what makes sense for your character, I question the overall quality of your RP.
