It’s that or pity, take your pick.
I have little pride, I can take the pity.
remember the samuel
never forget the samuel! !
That’s it. I’m sick of all this “Masterwork Bastard Sword” bullshoot that’s going on in the d20 system right now. Katanas deserve much worse than that. Much, much worse than that.
I should know what I’m talking about. I myself commissioned a genuine katana in Japan for 120 Yen (that’s about $1) and have been practicing with it for almost 2 years now. I can’t even cut wooden boards with my katana.
Japanese smiths spend years working on a single katana and fold it up to a million times to produce some of the biggest pieces of shoot known to mankind.
Katanas are barely half as sharp as European swords and half as hard for that matter too. Anything a longsword can cut through, a katana can’t cut through at all. I’m pretty sure a katana would break trying to cut a knight wearing full plate with any kind of slash.
Ever wonder why feudal Japan never bothered conquering Europe? That’s right, they were too scared to fight the disciplined Knights and their Oakeshott types X through XXII of destruction. Even in World War II, Japanese soldiers targeted the men with the mamelukes first because their killing power was feared and respected.
So what am I saying? Katanas are simply the worst sword that the world has ever seen, and thus, require worse stats in the d20 system. Here is the stat block I propose for Katanas:
(One-Handed Exotic Weapon)
1d4 Damage
x2 Crit
-2 to hit and damage
Can never count as Masterwork
(Two-Handed Exotic Weapon)
1d6 Damage
x2 Crit
-1 to hit and damage
Can never count as Masterwork
Now that seems a lot more representative of the cutting power of Katanas in real life, don’t you think?
tl;dr = Katanas need to do much less in d20, see my new stat block.
'Ello mon, my name be Aeri’hira.
I be a 2700 year old Atal’trolldorei (Troll enthusiast, for you foreigners). I whittle totems and make offerings to de sun loa, and spend days perfectin’ me craft and doing superior troll activities (makin’ stone tools, being an obligatory dungeon or raid, practicin’ making juju).
I train wit’ my Darkspear sword and shield every day, dis superior weapon can cut clean through elven mail because it be blessed be de loa, ancestors, and voodoo, it be vastly superior to any other weapon on Azeroth. I earned my sword license two years ago, and I have been gettin’ betta every day.
I speak Zandali fluently, both in de Darkspear and Zandalar dialect, and I write fluently as well. I know everythin’ about Darkspear history and their code of formality, which I follow 100%
When I get me Darkspear visa, I am movin’ to Sen’jin to attend a prestigious school to learn more about their magnificent culture. I hope I can become a witch doctor for Master Gadrin, or a shadow hunter!
I own several masks, which I wear around town. I want to get used to them before I move to Sen’jin Village (Sen’jin Village, for you non-Zandali speaking pigs), so I can fit in easier. I bow to me elders and ancestors and speak Zandali has often as I can, but rarely does anyone manage ta respond.
Wish me luck in Durotar!
this physically pained me to write, i forget how much i hate writing accents
so when are these two star-crossed lovers meeting aerilen
Throm’ka. I’ll tell you I’m a Humanghar, too.

Not that anyone asked, but the swords meant for fighting armored opponents actually quickly became rather light with a strongly tapering point, which made it easier to thrust into gaps in the plate armor—the underarm, the neck, or the visor of a helmet—where the body was only protected by chain mail, which could be relatively easily pierced with a thin sword.
Slashes and strikes against actual plate armor did very little except the occasional bruise or concussion from the sheer force of impact. This gave rise to war hammers and other types of maces which used blunt force to practically strike through plate. Fun fact: later plate armor was practically invulnerable to even longbow arrows.
Thanks for coming to my TED talk.
Even a gambeson (ie, cloth armour) can stop longbow arrows. I feel like media in general tends to not do armour justice.
A gambeson is very, very effective at protecting the wearer from slashes and cuts, as well as dampening the impact of all sorts of strikes, which is why it was worn under metal armor. The arrow, however, is practically a bullet: it has high kinetic energy (much higher than you’ll achieve swinging your sword) and a small, sharp point, which means it’s much more effective at punching through the layers of a gambeson. It will be slowed quite a lot, but the chances of penetrating at least a few inches into the flesh (which is be enough to take a man out of action) are quite high.
It depends on distance, arrow type used, and so on.
Here is an example of gambeson providing decent protection.
A full suit of plate armour basically makes you invulnerable, F to penetrating power of (cross)bows. I don’t know about the gambeson though (re: it won’t actually save you).
Time for me to shine.
Gambeson is best worth beneath other armour, anyway, rather than on its own. Plate plus mail plus gambeson is the real deal.
