[Tushui-RP] Protectors of Heaven

It is always a joyous occasion to watch the masses squabble for second place from the top spot.

Big Chung wishes you big luck, perhaps one day you may even receive Big Chung’s attention for more than a passing moment. Though holding your breath is not advised. :money_with_wings:

We will be loitering around Stormwind for a while for recruiting and rp but not intending to stay for too long.

It is a strange place.

Not sure if a thing but… it has been peeving me and I need answers.

Is there even such a thing as heaven in WoW?

@loreology

As far as I’m aware, there are no simple, single place of afterlife considered as either manichean Heaven or Hell. The commonplace for dead sentients in WoW’s cosmology is the Shadowlands (the black and white place you go when you die IG). It isn’t set as hell per se but it isn’t really described as a good place by any means either.

Some of Azeroth’s many cultures/faiths have alternatives. I believe some druids, for instance, can rest in the Dream upon their death.
Other Naaru/Light-related cultures lead to a Light-Heaven that we don’t know much about.
Some supposedly join their ancestors to a resting place often viewed as peaceful and desirable and even among the races sharing that belief, there are many nuances (the way you go there, the how, the why, whether it’s deserved or not, etc).
Vrykuls go to the Halls of Valor, etc, etc.

I believe there is such a thing as Heavens in Pandaren culture but it doesn’t follow our definition of a sweet place in the clouds, it’s more a way to describe the realm to which the ancestors went to rest.

With that said, the lore is rather vague when it comes to those things.

[EDIT]: @Zeepkist @Roggor ; Nice! That’s enlightening. I should spend more time on the forums for discussions like this…

The word ‘heavenly’ does come up in Mists at least, which implies that Heaven is likely a word that exists.

Also, while the pandaren (mogu) language is often its own thing, many of the names of places and characters tend to have some relevance to the place/character themselves if translated into Chinese. Lei Shen, for example, is 雷神, which means Thunder God.

Similarly, Tian Monastery would likely be translated as the Monastery of the Heavens or Monastery of Heaven (Tian, 天, meaning Heaven or Sky, though in the case of a monastery, Heaven would make more sense). Obviously it could be argued that this is purely for flavour and has nothing to do with the lore, but it’s something of an implication at least.

There’s also a massive number of words that would be pronounced as Tian (with various different tones), but that character is the most common and comes up in many, many temple names in China.

Pretty much beat me to it.

Heaven in the judeo Christian sense doesn’t exist in WoW. Even the light religions don’t refer clearly to such a thing. “you will taste only paradise” (Bridenbad) is not conclusive enough to say there’s a definitive heavenly realm in light cosmology. Becoming “one with the light” is more often referred to at least, which is a quite different concept.

The way I’ve understood Heaven in this guilds name is Heaven as the term is used in native religions of the East Asian reaches. That is it doesn’t necessarily refer to a specific place, rather it’s a word used to refer to an extraterrestrial realm that has sacred meaning (usually where Gods and spirits and such live).

If we take this meaning then, pandaren absolutely believe in Heaven in this sense as they make copious references to places their ancestors go and inhabit. The quest in the jade forest where you free the ancestral spirits is a nice depiction of this. (the tan Chao is the bridge that connects the earth and the sky, the sky in this case being where the spirits go, a la heaven)

Beaten by some good replies.

A small thing to add is that there are numerous items referring to heaven or heavens, such as the heavenly cloud serpents or the glyph of the heavens that gives your priest a little cloud to float on, fitting for the aesthetic.

I remember a similar question about hell, not for the same reason I’m sure, but some were arguing that such a word shouldn’t be used in game despite there being a fairly prominent lore character with the word in their name?

Lightforged Garrosh Heavenshout? No, I regret even thinking that.

If I had Pandaren on Alliance would join in an instant. I have looked up to Chieun as rper and I’m sure that this guild will definetely grow and progress greatly. I only had chance to RP with Chieun briefly but mostly seen pressence over forums and it always was very inspirational, also on your dk character. I wish you best of luck with this project it definetely sounds great, even if it is on the blue side.

Roggor isn’t wrong. ‘Heaven’ in this instance has little in common with the traditionally Western impression, but rather is placed in an opposite to the physical, worldly earth.

In other news…

While any pandaren who wish to take up arms against Windrunner in the name of the homeland will be welcomed in the Protectors, a number of specialist roles are especially sought after.

A Celestial priest is wanted, to oversee the group’s rites and traditions, and tend to the spiritual and mental wellbeing of its members.

A Serpent Rider is wanted to act as a scout and messenger, as well as invaluable air support in battle.

A Shaman or Geomancer is wanted to ensure the group’s actions are in harmony with nature, elements and ancestors, as well as to defend the group from the sorely misguided shaman of the Horde.

A Blacksmith is wanted to maintain and repair the group’s equipment, and even forge new items for use in the war.

A Cook is wanted to both prepare efficient rations and magnificent feasts. While all pandaren can be expected to have some cooking skills, a dedicated professional is still desired.

A Turtle Keeper or similar is wanted, to look after the turtle mounts traditionally used by pandaren organisations.

A Scout is wanted, to spy on enemies, gather information, and carry out other covert work - often alone.

A Mage or Wizard is wanted, to provide various utilities to the group depending on their skills (portals, conjured food…) in addition to their combat spells.

So many spirits held in captivity here… I can feel them everywhere. Even the walls are a cage for the long-dead.

<Name>, we cannot simply break the sorcery over this place - doing so would release countless agonized souls to wander the earth. They will need a beacon, something to guide them.

With your help, I can create a tan-chao: a bridge from this world to the heavens. For this ritual, I’ll need a bowl, a candle, and a jade cong. You should be able to find them all within the ruins.

Pandaren definitely have a concept of heaven in their culture.

Not in Wow there’s not a direct mention of heaven. But there’s WC2 and WC3 quotes referring to heaven and it’s archangel guardians.

It’s sod’s law that as I began to level this guy and invest myself in prep for tauren /hm rp and characters this comes along as I was just prior focused on my tushui monk (jinjo). So im very happy to see this and I give it immense thumbs up. I just can’t focus on more than one char at once, it’s an irk and a curse.

Good luck with the tauren/hm rp, are there many tauren focused guilds around right now?
I saw one a while back but cannot remember it’s name, I don’t know if it’s around anymore. =\

I’ll worry about that when I get there. I wasn’t doing it because of a guild base or such, rather I’ll just get a “oh, you know what I’d really like to make a tauren character” and it just goes from there. Sometimes it leads to a guild, sometimes it doesn’t. I tend to rp characters as individuals mostly anyway outside of guilds I’ve found (usually because for one reason or another it just doesn’t work for my char). It’s just weirdly ironic after I start a new project a guild pops up that actually fits my boys in blue tushui or die pandaren characters.

Other mentions of heaven include the following.

This is from the Boon of A’dal questchain in Icecrown

" A’dal says: Fear not, young one, for this crusader shall not taste death.

A’dal says: In life, Bridenbrad was the bearer of great deeds. Now, in passing, he shall taste only paradise.

A’dal says: The light does not abandon its champions."

All in all its fair to say that Heaven, be it Pandaren, Light generated or otherwise can be referred to as the ‘better afterlife’, I mean if the shadowlands exists its opposite might also exist…

Man that quest was great.

I should go do it again some time.

Tomorrow at 20:00 we are holding the Muster for Battle event, in which recruits are welcomed, members are inspected and preparations made for the group’s very first mission!
