Updating addons without ads?

Been away a bit, how are people updating addons without ad these days.

CurseForge and Wago both seem to have ads now (as does WoWup via the ads) . Blocking the ads via PiHole seems to block updates… So other than manually is there another option?

Get the alpha version of curseforge, should be ad free.

I think you can opt out of all the ads in the curseforge app.
This was the first thing I did and I almost never saw ads again

The ads are in a tiny window in the bottom right.

How could this ever bother you?

Blocks updates though if you do… Well did for me last night… will look again.

I don’t ‘do’ ads in any way shape of from they are a plague.

Anyway I just asked since I’ve not been about a bit, if there are not ‘easy’ solutions I’ll explore further myself.

Thanks for the replies.

Takes such little time to update an addon, I dont even notice the ads. If it takes you a long time, upgrade your storage to an SSD for faster read/write times if you havent already.

So you want an addon manager for free, and for someone to maintain it for free?

Well, I guess that’s no different to what the addon creators do…

Anyway, why not just install them manually from their repositories? If it becomes out of date, I just head back to the repository and replace my outdated version.

It is only the opting out that is in the options of curseforge or overwolf (I do not remember). It did not prevent me from getting updates so far.
It only leaves behind begging text about how the ads support the creators.

Hah! Any creators who are making something extraordinary and complex will always be having some patrons.

Ads can infect your computer. I got a keylogger from an ad on wowhead and I’ve never used any browser without adblocking and noscript since then.

Unless they can 100% guarantee tje ads are safe, I’m not allowing any. An exe file running ads outside these protections is a security risk.

Also in general, the internet ads have been obnoxious and intrusive since at least 2005.

I use a network wide adblocker, never see ads in curseforge.

As do I but the API seems to be blocking updates if the ads are not served (I use PiHole btw.) If you have found a way to work around this please share.

Maybe this is the answer
WoW: How to Install CurseForge Standalone - Addon Manager Guide - YouTube

It is probably the one that Dejarous mentioned

I will also try it myself back home

I either don’t see the ads or they are not intrusive/visible enough for me to notice them.
You could try it manually but you’ll likely have to go for the site owned by the same people as curseforge.

You can just frontload your browser with an army of adblockers but you’d still be downloading manually.

don’t use them like me make’s the game more intresting, i stop’t using them when the addon became mandatory.

I’ve gone back to manually updating them.
I have a text file in the _retail_\Interface folder which has the URL to each of my addons. When one needs updating I just download the .zip file and unpack it into the Addons folder overwriting the existing files.

It’s not as arduous a task as you might think.

The curseforge app is actually really good. I just press update all every few days and it does them effortlessly. Good for trying out new ones too.

I was wondering the same

I barely notice it. I use the Alpha standalone version.

That is the Beta with the ads and they are not tiny… As expressed above it is not the size it is their very presence I wish to avoid.

Anyway this has quickly become a circular conversation… There doesn’t seem to be a fix so it is manual for me (if I bother at all - not playing at the moment was planning to return after D4 beta next week)

Thanks for the input all… My rngusus been good to you.

Okay they call it Beta now but it’s still not intrusive, and causes no issues. Half the time no ad appears in the short time it takes me to update.
