Using different letters within names?

Yo, new to RPing and going to get into it.

Starting a new character first off, and trying to find a name for a Gilnean. Is it frowned upon to use different letters, like á/í/ú/é/ó etc in order to get the name that I want as long as it follows the normal naming conventions on a RP server?

It’s fine, don’t worry. We are on a High Pop server, meaning 90% of regular sounding names are taken. If you want a character with a “human” name, chances are, it’s taken. It’s very common place to use accents and the like to name your character, and you’ll find it all across the server.

Of course, you could always name your character their surname (unless that’s taken too), or even a nickname. So long as it doesn’t sound out of place on Azeroth, you’re good. :+1:

EDIT: Makes me wish people wouldn’t hoard names and make us pay 100k+/real money for them, but that’s a story for another day. :evergreen_tree:

As far as I’m aware, not at all! The only issue is you might find it difficult to claim your correct name on Argent Archives, but I know plenty of characters who do this and no one bats an eyelid. You’re absolutely good.

It’s not frowned upon. I don’t do it, because I’m very particular about getting the ‘actual’ name, but no one is going to treat you any differently if you’ve got an accent or something. With tools like TRP, you can type up the name without the accent anyway, and that’s how it’ll be presented in RP.

P.S. Welcome to AD and welcome to RP

It’s not inherently wrong, though it can be a little annoying if you’re trying to type out the character’s OOC name for different purposes (mail, guild invites, whispers, etc) which is why I tend to steer away from using accented names whenever possible.

cries in ‘my character’s actual name is taken by a level 80’

Using the character’s surname as your OOC name is also another comfy way to get the name you want.

It’s fine, the only thing frowned upon is making meme names containing multiple words. Other than that, you should be good.

Shouldn’t be an issue from people tbh. Most people I see having an issue with letters such as á, é and í etc are people who don’t have accented letters in their alphabet.

This post was made by bilingual, to-be trilingual gang.

As long as it’s a regular accent like so: é or á

It’s not so bad so long as it isn’t excessive. Easy to do, just hold Alt Gr.

But if it requires inputting the konami code and it wipes the text you wrote? Pls no.

What’s excessive and what isn’t might depend on one’s keyboard layout, though. For example, the Polish one can easily type ę/ą/ł/ó, but the á or é will require alt codes iirc. I would assume something similar is the case for the Germans and their ä/ë/ö.

Indeed. ÄÖÜ are keys on the German board, French accents are keys as well, but when you go into the Polish examples given, or Skandinavian letters like å, it requires alt+ codes. I think the safest is the ^ that should be on most boards, since it’s also a mathematic operator. (guessing)

I don’t think you can use ^ in WoW nicknames to be fair

You can

Really? Thought it’s the same as % or $.

^ is a French accent as well. It hides particularly well on an î ingame. Speaking of course 'bout putting the ^ ontop of a letter. Like Bôôm. Not stand-alone. Like ´and ` wouldn’t work alone, but as accents théy dò.

Oh, okay. That makes sense.

Here have some letters from me also! â ü ö ğ ç ş ı İ

If its a problem, then I’m in neck deep , so hope not
Don’t worry, sadly since we can’t have family names (ironically, another feature SW:TOR managed to implement years ago ) the pool we could choice is smaller and smaller with every day
Even the non-human names sometimes are already in use (usually by a low lever toon nobody touched since the BC )
So don’t worry!

Also space between letters
