View distance

Why there is no view distance option in settings ? is it possible to increase it somehow?

Gotta be honest I don’t understand why they added the water, sunshafts, grass physics and shadows of retail but left the view distance as it was. Not being able to see Teldrassil from Auberdine is really weird.

its really ugly especially when you fly to darnassus or over feralas area. they should let us increase it .

Can’t find it, but I think it was something like giving other players an unfair advantage in PvP, that was a statement I seem to remember floating around when this debate popped up a long time ago.
I do agree that we should be able to increase it though.

There are view distance options on the system page, and camera options if that’s what you mean.

Camera distance and view distance isnt same thing, i dont think u can change view distance, the distance how far u can actualy see, not how far camera is from your char

I am talking for view distance not camera distance.
View distance is how far you are able to see terrain .

Just a speculation but I do think it’s because while we’re playing the “vanilla” experience, we still run on a modernised engine. So it’s easy to add fog to the mix because it’s a global trigger and easily manipulated. Props on the other hand tend to be more static, meaning they would have to “downgrade” the engine.

They’ve done as good as job as they can on the “vanilla” graphics feel, but there’s no denying that the engine used has had a few upgrades over the years that can’t be downgraded.

the distance you are able to see npc or players with the distance you see terrain is a different thing. they can increase the view distance without increasing the target detection distance.

There is a slider for that in the system settings, it’s near the ground clutter one, it’s 1 to 10. There may be a command that sets it further. It doesn’t alter how far away mobs and NPCs appear.

I may be getting mixed up with later expansions/changes but, yeah, I thought there used to be slider to adjust the view distance, ie, see mobs/npcs from further away.

If you played on a private server you’d know that the options from back in vanilla were… very limited.

Not even retail has that.

Well I’m getting mixed up with completely different game, then

You can use cvars to change object load distance and probably view distance I didnt try it yet to verify. The addon AdvancedInterfaceOptions makes it easy and remembers default settings if you mess with them.

Cvars like Farclip, terrainLODDist, lodObjectCullSize, lodObjectFadeScale and more can be edited there without macros or console commands. Changing such settings may impact your performance ofcourse.

There is no VIEW DISTANCE setting in classic . Only enviromental detail and ground clutter.

Only retail got view distance option.
Log in both games and check by your self

The config file in retail also have
"SET graphicsView distance “10” "
While in classic config there is no such line.

I do have a recollection of this back in vanilla. It isn’t nice to have a short camera distance and ride straight into a bunch of people from the opposite faction.
