Void elf reasons

Technically you encounter Pathaelon as early as Hellfire Peninsula, where he sends Goliathon, the mighty King of the Colossi (with no lore whatsoever) after you.

The Scryers were largely trying to find solid proof, they could say what they wanted but people wouldn’t have believed them. And even when they did find the evidence they need it’s implied to not be an instant tide-turner either.

“This is the chance we’ve been waiting for, -name-. Not only have we uncovered the evidence we need to show our people who Kael’thas is really working for, but we can prove our strength by defeating his new masters.”

“As word of Kael’s new allegiance spreads, more people will see things our way. The fact that we can claim such a decisive victory against Kael’thas’ new overlords puts us in a most favorable situation.”

Oh… I learned something new today, it seems!

Thanks for the information!

You can rationalize why void elves attack blood elves quite easy if you dont take it as “They kill any member of the Blood Elf race on sight.” As Susanoo pointed out with Umbrics quotes, they want to reunite the people of Quel Thalas (under alliance banners). So they dont murder blood elves, they fight and kill supporters and soldiers of what they might view as an illegitimate regime. Thats kinda bread and butter of any civil war, isnt it? To “save” your people, you need to kill those of your people who hold other political views then you.

The orphans were coming right for me, your honour. I had no choice but to cast Meteor Swarm.

And if you take a step back, “it’s an illegitimate regime because the man in red said we couldn’t research old god spells and told us to stop” has a certain amusing idiocy to it.

Edit: I wouldn’t really class it as a civil war to be honest.

“Can’t let the horde have this magic, they would be too evil”

randomly condemns the goblin proletariat to an unknown hellscape via indiscriminate murder-portals

haha void magic goes woosh

Well, im assuming within the void elves, there are different reasons why they would overthrow the Pro-Horde Government of Lorthemar.

Persecution and/ or Exile alone is already more then enough. (Wether or not its the Void Elves own fault in an objective sense doesnt really matter to them, does it?)

As Umbric implied, they never really supported the whole horde alignment in the first place. Wanting your homecountry to leave an political block is an legimate reason to overthrow your gouverment. (if your radical enough or see no other way to archive this step without violence)

Lastly, it could be any number of reasons that made them lose any hope in the government, even if its legal still the legitamate one. („The Government did XY? Omg! Not my President!“)

Wether or not its an outright civil war or just an inserrection movement, whatever. It certainly is an political force in exile, backed by a mayor political power, that sooner or later wishes to take control of the contry. You´ll find all kind of real world examples for that in the 20th century.

Personal opinion time!

Elves are long lived and they fill that time with petty grudges and react like a Diva to any slight.

See millenia passing and Night Elves and High Born still goading each other.

They mass produce everything, including their own children. The cull of their kind by both velf and DId was needed.
Goblins can’t have too large of a racial pool, they make the other races look like there is only ten of each.

This is my main issue with the void elf story.

I don’t think Blizzard ever really meant to make it come across this way but they’ve unintentionally made the void elves seem selfish and hypocritical.

While they have always been critical of the Horde, they didn’t really act until they became targets of their own ambitions. Ambitions which - like spoke about earlier - mirrored a prior “civil war” plot in almost all but ending (or rather the ends to a means themes that run throughout). They were very much willing to research a dangerous form of magic for Silvermoon, they get told to stop but continue. The lead dude then questions himself, hey, maybe Rommath has a point. But continues regardless, for Silvermoon. And then, after nearly killing himself and all his followers goes “yo this is too evil for silvermoon to handle”. And even then, they’re a tiny group really. Of scholars and researchers who have a penchant for the void.

So really, their only push and drive for shifting blood elf politics away from the Horde has come from their own disregard for orders and the consequences which rippled from that.

I think what Blizzard intended to show and what is seen is a bit different, the biggest mistake was making void elves come from Blood Elves. They should have been Silver Covenant or the High Elves of Windrunner Stronghold IMO.

It would have certainly made them more understandable - and easier to sympathise with - rather than someone who grumbles at the status quo, shoots themselves in the foot and then blames everyone else for it.

What if Alleria and Turalyon had never come back and instead we got Vereesa as the Head Void Elf after she dove into void research while still mourning Rhonin’s death?

What if…

I don’t hate the idea of the void elves - let me make that clear - a group who are outcast for delving into forbidden secrets is always gunna be a cool premise.

Blizzard just did a Blizzard, IMO and the story is a bit mangled for me really.

Never😉

what if they just added the silver cov to the alliance as an allied race and never pulled the void elf card in the first place

That would have been really strong and muscular. Alas.

Then warmode on AD would become even more obnoxious for Horde.

To be honest, i like that part. Intentions shouldnt always be noble, good and selfless. Whether or not they want to admit it, most political factions are in some way or form selfish and/or hypocritical. That makes it… human.

You dont like how things go in your country? Alright. But usually, you dont just rise up at the very first moment. Maybe you still got some hope in the government. Maybe you dont belive violence is needed yet. Maybe be cost of acting against the thalassian Government is too high. So you grind your teeth, keep your mouth shup and go along. Maybe it gets worse over time. Maybe it doesnt, but you and your circle of friends start to radicalize all on your own.

And then, at some point, it finally became enough and you start to push for your goals with violence. (out of your own drive, of because persecution forced your hand) I for example belive Umbrics followers might have been rather dismissive of Rommaths moves in some part. After all, this is the government you dont like in the first place cracking down on you. Would you really belive these guys act in your best interest? “Obviously”, they get it all wrong, like they got it wrong with the hole horde buisness etc. etc.

And down the rabbit hole it goes.
