The pathing was improved in some patch of BFA or start of Shadowlands and then again made worse in 9.1.5, I think it was too good to reach treasures in Korthia so they nerfed it
Thats more like a rule than exception when it comes to “fixing” warlock spells. Amazed how stuff that players enjoy with this class gets fixed and made worse asap but gameplay impacting bugs take several years to fix or are just left to rot forever

The angle between point A and point B is higher than ~70 degrees.

With that in mind, before patch 9.2 you could use gateways almost every time if gateways had already been placed, despite the height differences and terrain obstacles between gateways.
Now in path 9.2 not only weird placement rules of patch 9.1.5 are still active, but additionally now your character must see clearly the area of distant gateways, so no obstacle could obstruct the POV.
