better keep it that way than change the order of buttons like in Wrath. This change here is insignificant as it only changes appearance of the buttons, while the change in Wrath altered the way we create characters, which had always been “Dwarf → Male → Paladin → appearance” on classic and retail until Shadowlands, and now it’s “Dwarf → Paladin → confused” on Wrath.
As someone who has been using that UI for over a decade and was able to make a character with desired appearance in seconds, I find that change in order of buttons annoying.
and also literally called nonbinary people nobodies!
in WOW they’re numbered, not lettered. So 2 is 2. However one might argue that 2 is better because it’s more - like how people argued over Genesis, whether a woman is better because it’s an improved version of man, or man is better because it was first.
In Demon’s Souls female is body type A and male is body type B, which is obvious, but then later it gives you a choice of “Animation type A” and “Animation type B” with preview of walking animation, and many people don’t realise it’s meant to be tied to gender and that other animations than walking glitch up if you don’t match body type with animation type.
In New World it lets you choose “body type” except that the preview is zoomed in on the face and there is no zoom out option - and it can be missed if the face has a beard, and you don’t notice anything wrong until you’re already late in the game and decide to undress and find out you have a bra.
Also most games have female and male voices thrown together and just numbered, forcing you to preview all voices even if you are interested only in male or female voices - here Neverwinter Nights rules because each voice has unique name giving a hint on what it sounds like.
In Baldur’s Gate 3 there are 4 body types, with one female and three variations of male. I’m sure that if they put gender as separate option there’d be 3 body variations of each gender. But at least apart from the numbered voices, the character wizard is easy to use. You can create a character with genitals that don’t match the body’s gender, and I’m not aware of any mechanic in Dungeons and Dragons lore that makes it possible, but it’s not an MMO so more customisation options are always a plus even if they aren’t consistent with lore.
On the other hand, in Lord of the Rings Online they just filed an update that enables beards on human females, and all skin and hair colours and styles regardless of what ethnicity you pick. Why it’s so important is because LOTRO had always been known as a game that pays a lot of attention to Tolkien’s lore and everything in it was consistent with extreme attention to detail - so obviously this change was the first lore-brekaing update. And the LOTRO community is unique as it’s not the usual gaming community - there is little to no toxicity or trolling, and there are a lot of people who play no other games than LOTRO, just like there are a lot of people who play no other games than The Sims. And they issued the update at no other time than now when a Classic private server is around the corner. They doomed themselves.
So far Cyberpunk 2077 was the only game where it was done the right way - your gender identity (as in, pronouns, etc) depends on whether you pick male or female voice which is clearly stated on the character creation screen, and it has transgender options that actually work and don’t cause glitches or confusion and doesn’t break the lore. Funny that the only game that got it right came from the country infamous for LGBT-free zones.
When did the LGBTQ communities demand gender to be renamed to body type? I don’t know a single person who identifies as body 1 or body 2. Or maybe I’m just corpsphobic and stay away from such people?
