This reminds me of a BFA run I did, it took me half the dungeon to realise that the druid tank was a boomkin
It would theoretically be nice to have faster queues and the thing I dislike most about my rogue is that I cannot shorten my queue if I wanted to.
Iām also quite experienced tank (although always dps main) and have really no problem with most of the things that annoy people, extravpulls etc. Iām very comfortable with the role (at least with the classes I play) and I donāt even remember the last time someone flamed me for my tanking skills.
But the thing is I donāt usually tank on my chars that can tank, especially for easier content. Delves I just do solo and never tried to pug. But for doing my weekly dungeons, normal, hc or tw I just queue as dps and it pops as I am doing other things I want to do like professions, wq etc. The basic reason is dps can carry low content. So I do all the things I want and on top of that fast and easy weekly dungeons.
You could add 7 new tank specs for every class and i would still play as DPS.
The problem is not that there is too few tank classes or specs the main problem is that people have no interest roleplaying as human toilet to maniacs on the internet.
I have seen zero instances of tank or healer bashing in queueable dungeons and delve groups this expansion (If we mess up then we just restart the Delve and clear it properly, no moaning). For the umpteenth time, Premade PuG shenanigans for harder raid difficulties and M+ do not happen outside of these spaces at an any noticeable frequency.
I understand to want to boycott M+, but that is not as much of a problem of tanking/healing as it is about M+ itself being designed to be a competitive dog eats dog hellscape that draws the worst impulses of players to the surface for all to see.
i hope youre not one of these maniacs and you respect tanks
because i started to respect tank job after playing one
Credulon is 100% correct.
There are 6 classes that can tank today. But in Vanilla there was only 1 (Prot Warrior).
In the process of going from 1 to 6, this happened: (A) balancing PPala and GDruid so that they could tank in TBC and WotlK. And (B) creating 3 new specs from scratch with a tank specā¦
In ALL that processā¦ the tanking community did not become any larger. In any way.
In other words, I will simplify:
There was a time where ALL tanks were PWarrior. Druids and Paladins had the spec, but it was so bad you could not tank at all. They re-balanced druids and paladins. Effectively giving them a ātanking specā that they did not have before.
What happened ? Did all the rets and dudus start tanking ? NO they did not. What happened is that some of the Prot Warriors re-rolled Prot Paladins. That is what happened. So the tanking community did not get any larger.
And it is what will happen again if you make shamans and evokers tank. So yeahā¦ Credulon is 100% right. And people claiming otherwise will behave 100% exactly like the thousands of Ret Paladins (there is one under every stone) that refuse to tank for some reason. And never will.
Because that is EXACTLY what we see today: Look at class population in Raider IO across all levels.
https://raider.io/mythic-plus-rankings/season-tww-1/all/world/leaderboards
8% of players, the MAJORITY by farā¦ are Ret paladinsā¦ Who I might add have a tanking spec that is OP beyond meta. And YETā¦ still play retā¦
What is stopping those guys from tanking ? Exactly. They dont want to tank. And never will. Just like the people here claiming that they would tank if they could. Well they wont.
I cannot speak for others but that is not true for me.
I will do whatever it takes to reduce the time I spend waiting in a queue or to be picked out of a listing the LFG tool instead of playing.
If anything I am more averse to healing than tanking because it requires watching what the others are up to and generally requires lots of addons to streamline (to this day we need Clique to keybind mouse buttons 3, 4 and 5 for mouseover on group/raid frames.
Yet I still grit my teeth and dusted off the Old Resto spec and I am using it more than the dps spec for group content now.
You can call me a rainbow farting unicorn if you like but this is who I am and I cannot be the only one.
PS: The last few days I am tanking on my paladin and DK because of how easy it is to get invited in Delve groups as a tank even if you are horribly undergeared, meanwhile a dps with 610 lvl will get snubed
I personally would not mind more tanking options. I like playing both warlock and mage, but I cannot commit to main either because neither can tank, which for organised groups can be an issue.
It would also mean the amount of dungeons I need to do is effectively doubled as I have to keep a tank/healer alt geared in order to help my guildies out with the role shortage.
That said the only thing this would achieve is to shift the current tank population around. It would not draw in substantially more players to try the role.
They dont want to tank. And never will. Just like the people here claiming that they would tank if they could. Well they wont.
Not true of all. Iāve tanked for my friendly local wow group, have tried all tanking classes, and Iād love to tank with new classesā¦ but I would never tank for pugs because theyāre so toxic. Currently if a pug tank doesnāt pull half the dungeon while the dps struggle with 1-button rotation they get kicked and screwed over for half an hour, and thatās not for mythic, thatās just in timewalking and normal dungeons.
PuGs are absolute hell in anything remotely thought provoking. Regardless of role
I get that. But be real here Etharas : What are we talking about ? What problem do we want to solve here ?
Tank supply in the M+ player pool ! The problem is that 20k players donāt want to tank. And that is why DDs have to spend so much time in the quew. Because we have a 20k over-supply of DDs.
So YOU as an individual will not change anything. WHY ? Because if instantaneous quews for 8% of the playerbase that plays Ret Paladin (PLUS all the Fury Warriors, DPS druids, DH DD and DD Monks) is not a good enough incentive to roll a tankā¦ Then what is ?
So YES you can speak for others. And in fact, you SHOULD speak for others because you personally will not solve the issue here. You are an irrelevant drop in the ocean when it comes to speaking about POPULATIONS instead of individuals.
So the question here is not why YOU Etheras donāt tank. The question is: Why donāt 8% of Rets tank ? And if 8% of rets wont tank, why would Warlocks tank ?
Then reroll Prot Paladin. That is āwhatever it takesā.
In fact, that is how I started healing. I used to be a Warrior DD main for 11 years. But I got sick of the quews. Tired tanking and healing. Did not like tanking but I fell in love with healing.
As an extra bonus, since I got more invites, I got more playtime. I practiced more, got better and as a result I heal better than I can DD even after 11 years of practice being one.
So here I am.
You dont even need a group as a tank to do Delves. Plus those can be soloed. Delves are a non issue when it comes to finding groups.
Its M+ what matters here.
I havenāt either because I havenāt tanked at all yet on my alt.
But from previous expansions, even in simple Timewalking dungeons, I have had someā¦ letās use a political correct term like āconstructive criticismā to refer to it, because I was stopping every 2 packs to clear them and loot them (god forbid you loot in a videogame that drops loot) instead of pulling everything up to the boss.
The only content Iāve experienced where Iāve seen damage-dealers get the flak is LFR.
I tank on the classes that can tank. I cannot tank without a tank spec.
I do not need to reroll, I already have a paladin at about 609 ilvl and I mostly use him as tank for delves. But guess what I also want to have the privilege to tank on other clases that I chose to main so that I can offer to do the role that is in demand at the current time.
I feel dis-incentivized to main mage, rogue etc because they need to have a waiting hell thanks to being single role. Sometimes I mained hunter due to hunter legendaries.
I have every class in the game at 70 or more (shaman, paladin and DK at 80 for now).
A lot of people feel convinced otherwise (since they will invite a tank at 540 ilvl vs a dps at 610 ilvl) . Also soloing lvl 8 Delves takes quite a lot more time than doing it in a 5 man since it does not scale up that much (and the dookers at Blizzard want 8 of them per week for the vault).
I have lost count of how often I said that M+ has huge anti-fun design issues that have been ignored/tolerated for too long and that is not the fault of the tanks
I also had some bad times over the years. But then I try to think about how many they are compared to the total times that nothing bad happenedā¦
It makes me think about how biased our brains are in favor of negative memories compared to positive ones.
I got some āunfair feedbackā in a Heroic Raszageth pug as a healer too. It definitely made me quite angry. But I did not swore off healing, I swore of raid pugs instead. Because that is the cause, callous strangers who do not care or understand context
Its totally irrelevant why you wont tank. Im not sure if I made myself clear. Look at these statistics:
https://raider.io/mythic-plus-rankings/season-tww-1/all/world/leaderboards#role=dps:mode=unique:minMythicLevel=2:maxMythicLevel=99
I did the math for you: 48.9% of DDs play a spec that can tank. In numbers: There are a total of 21M DDs in Raider IO. Of which 10M could tank. But only 8 DD specs out of a total of 26 have the capability to do so. So 30% of DD specs.
So we have an OVERSUPPLY of DDs that can tankā¦ but wont.
What does that tell me ? It tells me that the issue here has something to do with the tank roll. NOT with the supply of tank specs.
Its easy to see what the problem is, and what the solution is: Somehow convince 50% of the playerbase to switch spec and try tanking. Once you have managed to do that, THEN we can talk about shamans tanking.
Make up your mind then. Your problem seems to be that you ping-pong a lot with specs and dont have a main. Choose a main. Stick with your main, and you wont have as many issues.
Basically: From what you describe you do. If you want the perks of playing with a main, then play with a main. If you split your gametime with alts, then you will get the perks of having 1000 alts. But you cant have both. A day only has 24h.
Agreed. M+ does have some long overdue reforms that need to happen.
One of which is the tanking roll. Because it affects the quew times. That is the real solution to the real problem.
More tanking specs is not a problem. Nor a solution. Which is what this post is about.
I get that. I also get that it can be easier to fix the tank role than to make new tanks. But I still want new tanks down the road for existing classes.
I will make an effort to encourage some people in the right class to pick up tanking in the future. It will be interesting to hear what various random people say its their reason for not tanking personally.
I had chosen to focus on this shaman for TWW. Then I blew a fuse at that tank waiting time I mentioned in the OP and about how we have to solo Zevkir hard mode to not miss out on some cosmetic and how that is easier with a higher level Bran, so in order to level Bran faster have to do more bountiful delves per day than before, so doing it as a tank reduces the downtime, which made me go back to my DF main, the paladin.
I get itā¦
But does Blizzard get it?
Or do they think that we want Tank flavored sushi rolls as a food item?
You are proving my point right there. It dosent matter WHY you dont tank. The fact is that you dont.
So maybe changing the M+ scaling in such a way that tanking is not toxic in PuG groups (as you claim) will convince you to tank again.
But giving shamans a tanking spec will not make the PuG scene less toxic. So what would the result of giving shamans a tanking spec be ?
Exactly what I am reading from you right now. A bunch of shamans saying that they wont tank because the PuG scene is ātoxicā. And we would STILL have a tank shortage.
So yeah. What you describe is EXACTLY my point.
I cant talk about Delves. I dont consider Delves an issue in this discussion because they can be soloed. And if you would have chosen a DK DPS or Hunter you would not have as many issues in the solo department.
As for Zevkir (??) difficulty it makes sense that its hard. Delves are now an end-game pillar, and as such, you got end-game content. Complaining that Zevkir (??) is inaccessibly hard is like saying that CE in Raids is hard or 0.1% title in M+ is hard.
And if you have to rerol the FOTM meta spec, farm Myth track gear in content you dont like, and spend a ton of time preparing to kill it, then welcome to the club. Its what you gotta do in the other end-game pillars as well.
But putting Delves asside, the tanking problem is a specific problem for organized group content. Namely M+ and Raids. Delves are irrelevant in this discussion.
I dont think they do. And you are 100% correct. They take 10 years to do what is necessary to be done.
I dont know why. I cant explain it.
What I can say is that its related to this statement of yours:
With the facts you stated aboveā¦ do you really think Blizzard can manage to balance out correctly 11 tanking specs if they fail so hard with just 6 ?
Is that what you call an optimistic future ? Or do you prefer that they focus their efforts in making the existing specs fun (both tanking and DD specs) ? This is a more realistic thing to ask, because as you said, its the easiest thing to do.
Lets keep things simple for Blizz. Since they struggle so much with it as it is.
I would not compare Zevkir ?? to the 0.1% title and CE in raids.
Delves at least in S1 are not a proper pillar because they cannot reach the ilvl ceiling and thus cannot support the structure. It is like a decorative pillar made of plaster without any mechanical strength.
All right, lets keep things baby-simple for them since they do not seem to have played the game in years.
And the one who might still be playing thinks that only the top 0.1% matters
I have to agree with you. Zekvir(??) is orders of magnitude easier to do than 0.1% and CE. But Delves still give Hero track gear. And a such, should have a heroic difficulty challenge.
But even if you did have a point. You know what that implies right ? If you want to make Delves more āend-gameā you need MORE difficulty. So a Zekvir (???) or something like that.
IMO that is not the case.
Its not what I observe. The mistake blizzard does is listening to the top 0.1% AND the bottom 0.1%. Ignoring everyone else in the middle.
Zevkir is a mage tower encounter that does not belong in the delve format imho.
<= Trauma from doing the legion mage tower on all classes and specs.
I will start doing some serious attempts now that I upgraded that huge sword to ilvl 619. level 48 Bran has to be high enoughā¦ right?
